Winston-Salem Open thread

Yeah, I agree, he has to relax for sure, I think it will come with maturity hopefully. Watched a little on the webcam and he was doing the, I'm gonna throw my racket, but not really, nonsense, which is stupid.

It was as if he was putting on a show...expecting to get a response from the crowd. Oddly, these incidents happened after mundane points....not after a break, or a really tense point.

Seeing this live, it really appeared that he was acting up because he thought that's what the crowd was there to see.

NO RYAN, WE JUST WANT TO SEE GREAT TENNIS WITHOUT THE CRAPPy ATTITUDE

Yeah I was there too for the racket throw, he's lucky he didnt injure anybody or damage a vehicle with that little stunt. Did you see that young kid run out there and get it? LOL atleast he went home with a nice souvenir. Definitely juvinile behaviour from Harrison though. He's still a kid, got some growing up to do. It was very cool to get to see the pros up close like that though. Never been to an ATP tour event before where you can watch them courtside.

James's match was a huge dissappointment. Haase even said in his post match interview that he didnt think he played that well. James just played horrible, had no rhythm on the serve or FH. I watched him warm up earlier in the day and he looked pretty solid then, happy and relaxed.

It was funny though cause after James lost, I came down the stairs right behind Thomas and he must have thought I was the other guy in their camp cause he said directly to me without looking "well atleast we don't have to stick around for the Harrison/Duclos match now" then he looked up and saw that I wasnt who he thought I was and was like "Oh..sorry" I just smiled.

No kidding about the toss....the kid's father (?) was carrying the racket after the match....

This was a pretty unique tourney in that courts 2,3,4 allowed us to sit so close to the players. I sat on the first row for all of those courts...it was pretty cool sitting so close to Jamie Murray and Santiago Gonzalez, although they didn't say too much during the changeovers....

James Blake was tough to watch. You want him to play so well, yet he doesn't. I was surprised at how many shanks he had...a couple of them were outrageous...

Funny story about Thomas :)

Anymore Roddick updates...I can't see anything, just the score line...

looks like Andy is won the first set 6-1, and is now down 2-1, presumably on serve?

Also Monaco up 6-0, 4-3

Man I am so disappointed right now. I have tickets to tomorrows night session thinking I would get the chance to either see Roddick or Isner play, but no, they have both the americans playing the day session and the headliner at 7 pm is Haase vs Dolgopolov followed by a doubles match. Why on earth would they schedule the two players with the biggest draw in the same session? I tried to strategically pick my sessions so that I'd have a good chance to Roddick play. So far Ive missed both his matches. I got to see James and Ryan both get stomped on tuesday, got to see Isner vs Sela so it wasnt a total loss I guess. Just doesnt make sense to me.

Oh well, atleast I get to go. Haase vs Dolgopolov should be a good match nonetheless. And then I go back Friday for the day session. Based on my luck, Roddick will play the night session on friday if he wins tomorrow.

I think Roddick either loses to Isner or Baghdatis, or he wins the tourney.

Easy or Hard, I think he'll get through Monaco

Yah I imagine Roddick will play the night session the next day since that will be uber marque against either Isner or Baghdatis.

Sorry man, I know the feeling of going to live tennis and getting screwed by the tourney organizers...

Rest of today's scores:
__________
Andy Roddick d Santiago Giraldo 6-1 6-3
Juan Monaco d Kei Nishikori 6-0 6-3
Marcos Baghdatis d Steve Darcis 7-5 6-0

Tomorrow's matches:
_________________
John Isner v Marcos Baghdatis
Andy Roddick v Juan Monaco
Sergiy Stakhovsky v Julien Benneteau
Robin Haase v Alexandr Dolgopolov

because espn is covering the day session, not the night. tv generally dictates a tournament's order of play.

Dang you're right. I knew there had to be a reason. Man I should have used the espn coverage as a gauge of when to schedule my sessions lol. Thanks for pointing that out to me, makes sense now.

Well Roddick has been looking good throughout, not a lot of competition though. I want him to win, if only because his ranking shouldn't be 21. He's still top 10, top 12 at worst.

Anyway, Isner's lucky to still be out on the court, but I think he'll win in a 3rd set tiebreak.

LOL brad gilbert on getting Andre to toss the ball higher - "Toss the Salad!"

I feel like the odd man out since I'm the only one who's posting. Anyway, power went out there so there's no hawk eye or microphone for the chair there. Oddly, the scoreboard is still working. Baggy is extremely pissed, and Isner just broke for a 5-4 lead in the 3rd set. Serving for the match.

How is the power outage ridiculous? There's a hurricane on the east coast that's causing power outages, storms, etc.

marcos... :(

his 1st serve % is getting lower and lower... :?

So I know Roddick is never actually aggressive.

But he's underated as a returner, he obviously plays high percentages off the ground and competes with the best of them.

and yah he's got the big serve.

BUT, is Andy atleast putting the ball really deep? I think Roddick's best chance to get to the 2nd week of a major(without completely retooling his FH) is to atleast hit the ball deep.

If it's soft, and pops up, and isn't a weapon - then it's only effectiveness is if he can put it on the back line over and over and over again.

Was he doing that today?

Ahh its all good! I have tickets to the day session tomorrow and I get to see Roddick vs Isner!

I was at the night session tonight, Haase vs Dog was pretty entertaining I guess, the crowd really wasnt into it at all.

I think I have come to the conclusion that the majority of people that are in the stands at these tournaments don't really keep up with tennis like most of us do. Atleast here at this tournament in W/S. I mean I don't expect everybody to know everything there is to know about Haase or Dog, but where I was sitting, nobody seemed to have even heard of them before. One lady that sat next to me on tuesday just couldnt believe that James was losing to this strange man from the netherlands named Haase. She asked me how it was possible for James to lose so early and seemed to think that James was still a top 10 player. I explained to her that Haase is definitely no slouch and James isnt exactly what he was in 2006 and she seemed shocked. Another person tonight had no idea that Jamie Murray was Andy's brother, people sitting behind me had never heard of a "deciding point" or a "match tiebreak". Just seems weird that the stands are so full of people that dont know much about tennis. People to the right of me weren't even watching the match, they were talking, texting and only looked at the court when the crowd made a noise like when somebody made a good shot.

I guess I shouldnt be complaining, atleast they came and maybe learned something about the sport. I guess its just a little disappointing that not a lot of people around here actually follow tennis or are true fans of the sport, they came more so because I guess the tennis atmosphere and lifestyle is appealing to upper class white people and they just feel that its something they should do. LOL I dont know. I had fun I guess thats all that matters.

I bet you watch that 2003 83-game Australian Open epic against El Aynaoui in which Roddick showed all his weapons, and weep. :(

But, remember this quote from Roddick after that match about his opponent ...

"He's 31-years-old, he's out there five hours, and he's still standing at the end. It's very impressive. I don't think I'll be able to do that when I'm 31," he said. "This has proven that even the old guys can still play some ball."

I think Andy will surprise himself in the next few years. He's surprised me at times.

Roddick was 20 years old in that match. ..and I think to him, at the time, 31 was ancient.

in 2001 when Andre turned 31, I don't think anyone on the tour really thought he was "too old" to compete, or run down balls. Considering he played until 06' and made the US Open Finals in 2005.

I think you see this type of thing a lot.

In a recently posted Federer - David Letterman interview from 2005(in the Rafa Letterman thread) Roger casually says that his career is half over. The way Roger is talking now, that point in his pro career was really only 25 percent complete.

Even a year ago Roddick said he'd retire if he fell outside the Top 15 with the whole Lacoste endorsement deal....but now that Andy is #21(should rise to 17 if he wins Winston Salem though, and is only defending 2nd Round at the US Open) he is saying, well it's only cause I haven't been healthy enough to play that I have fallen in the rankings.

I tend to believe Andy, but the fact remains it's tough to have perspective when your Andy at 20 years old, or Roger at 24.

Andy also knows a LOT more about training, recovery, being a pro, etc., then he did in 2003. I'm sure he'd tell you now that a LOT of 31 year olds can run for days.

I'm liking the short service games for Roddick, he's serving well. Problem is he let Isner back into the set and it's hard to break the dude. Roddick is normally very good at defending his break.
