WISE 2086 Tension Head Users, would you please be so kind as to answer the following questions?
  • Do you ever go back and use your manual crank tensioner?
  • If you could get $100 discount to purchase a stringer minus the manual crank tensioner, knowing you were going to immediately be purchasing the 2086, would you save the $100?

1. Never, but if the power goes out, I can install the crank in 2 minutes.

2. Probably, I can't imagine using my crank anymore. And seriously how often do you need to string a racket when the power goes out.

I use the Wise tension head on an Alpha Apex. Occasionally, I'll string a wood racket on my older Ektelon because I like the way a flat racket mounts in it better. And yes, you could have to finish off a racket if the power goes out, but the tension would be uneven. My Wise head just started acting up last night, and I'm sending it back for repairs tomorrow (already boxed up and ready to go). Meanwhile, if I have any rush jobs that need done, I will just do them with the crank. The electronic tensioning has spoiled me in a way, but it's nice to have a backup. That's one of the main reasons I got the Apex crank and Wise tension head instead of a solely electronic machine in the first place. For $100, I'd keep the crank tensioner.

Steve-
What is you tension head doing (or not doing)? How long have you had it and about how many racquets have you strung with it?

First, it stopped pulling. It got to about 30# and just went silent. I turned it off, ran a test pull, and it worked for about 2 more pulls. Then, it quit pulling again, but then the tension (as shown on the screen) started climbing. I was stringing at 58#. The reading hit 58, but kept on going. 64, 68. 74. I shut it off immediately. Turned it back on, ran some test pulls again, set it at 58.1 just in case a particular sensor had gone out and did manage to finish the racket. I've had it since November 25, 2003 (1 month left on the warranty). I thought I'd strung around 800 rackets on it, but after looking back through my log, it's been over a thousand. It's worked flawlessly up until this time. I think Mr. Wise has a good product still, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another. The electronic tensioning is great, and I still had my manual backup crank. I have to admit, I was a little concerned as I had tried calling there several times and getting nothing but an answering machine. Finally I got through, which was a relief. Mr. Wise was helpful and pollite.

How does Wise handle the exchange? Do you get a new unit, with another 5 year Warranty or a Refurbished unit with a 90 day warranty?
Since the unit was still under warranty why should you have to pay shipping in both directions? Most companies you pay to ship it back and they pay to ship it back to you.

Built myself a Stringer

Thanks for everyone’s posts on their satisfaction, or dissatisfaction, with the different Tennis Stringer Manufactures/Importers that are available here in the USA. Based on the things I have read and researched, I ended up choosing to build myself a stringer. :D
Here is my configuration:
  • Mounting System, Clamps and Base – Alpha REVO4000
  • Tension Head – Wise 2086 Professional Digital Electronic Tension Head
  • Adjustable Stand/Cart – Apollo 51007 Audio/Video Cart with Cabinet and Power
It was a pleasure to do business with the gentlemen at Alpha and Wise. Both are world class organizations, and I am confident I will be happy with my selection. It will take a couple of weeks for me to get everything and put it together. If people are interested I will post pictures and a review of the setup at that time.
Thanks again!

Flash, I can't wait to see your set up. Please do post a picture or 2.

As for how they handle my return--I sent it back to Wise via FedEx ground--$10.75 from Virginia to California. I had to include a check for $17.50 for them to send it back. I shipped it in the box that they sent it to me in. They have instructions when you first receive it to keep the box in case it ever needs returned. The machine fits nicely in the foam they have in the box. The warranty is 2 years though, not five. I wish it were 5. I don't know if they extend the warranty for another 2 years or not, but my gut feeling is that they don't. I'll ask Mr. Wise next time I call. It's still a great machine, and an ingenious invention.
