Well I nominate Court, Mandilkova and Graf for starters.
#1 = Serena
#2 = Graf
Big dropoff afterwards.
Bump in the hope this gains traction.
Martina's 2nd was still good enough to come in behind, though there were times earlier in her career when in at crucial points she would tighten up.
Of the current crop of women Serena is the clear standout of the crowd. Her serve is her main weapon, her signature. Her ability to hit 2nd serve aces and just flat out be aggressive with it is amazing.
Of past players. Nav had a solid 2nd serve, problem was she often got to defensive after it and it was ruined. He could place it well though.
Davenports 2nd serves were OK. She wasn't afraid to hit them....but against other power hitters she tended to go flukey on 2nd serve points.
And later in her career too. It was sad watching her loose the 94 Wimbledon final to Martinez. She should have won, she knows she should have won, she knew that it was her last shot at a slam, she got tight and put in some truly awful second serves (says the guy who's never won anything).
But when she was on she was just awe-inspiring.
Very true and yes, that was a sad final to behold.
That second lost her the semi vs Capriati at wimbledon as well.
Mona Barthel potentially has a really good 2nd serve, she takes a lot of chances with it.
But Mona has to win some big matches for this to come to the attention of general tennis fans.
