So, who will win? Serena, Venus, or some other clown? :D

(jkjk)

The draw's already out? How do i let time pass me by.

I would like anyone other than Serena to win USO.

That anyone could be....

"I'm recharged," the 24-year-old, who overcame world number one Dinara Safina in the final to claim her second title of the year after victory in Marbella in April, said.

"I know I can play and move well and compete with the top players as good as I was, if not better. The US Open is my main goal." JJ! :) Maybe too much wishful thinking is a bad thing.

looking at that, Clijsters may not make the quarters, I think she could get to the 4th rd though if she gets past Bartoli in rd 2 (which she should..she beat her earlier this summer) but if Venus is there waiting and playing well that may be the end for her. Dementieva has a pretty tricky draw, Sharapova in the 3rd round (assuming Maria gets there), possible 2004 final rematch with Kuzzy in the quarters, than Safina and than who knows in the final. Serena has a possible Semi-final clash with Venus...but for some Reason I think Azarenka may deliver a shocker and get through. Serena should watch for Stosur, who seems to be on fire lately and could prove a spoiler in that quarter. Jankovic and Ivanovic in the 4th rd...wow thats kind of surprising...but of all the top 8 seeds seems like Safina has the easiest road to the quarters.

Overall this IMO is a great draw, I'm picking Venus though, gotta stick with my girl lol.

Elena/Maria should/could be a barnburner.

I voted Azarenka just for the sole fact that none of the top 10 are a lock to win this one. I don't see Serena repeating. Venus hasn't made a final of a non-Wimby slam since 2003. I love her, but Safina is crazy. Kuznetsova hasn't impressed me this summer. Wozniacki..... HELL NO! Zvonareva is working her way back into shape. Jankovic could go deep, but she is Ivanovic's lapdog. Dementieva is too much of a tease because you never know if good/bad Lena comes to play.

Sharapova and Clijsters are not going to win this event. A victory for them would be to get to the 4th round.

Azarenka hasn't played that much this year, so she should be well-rested for the USO. Her results at majors keeps improving and what better place to make a statement than at the USO. GO VIKA!

If Dementieva or Safina find a way to take it, I'll be just as happy.

My predictions:

Round of 16:

Safina defeats Schnyder
Jankovic defeats Ivanovic
Dementieva defeats Petrova
Wozniacki defeats Kuznetsova
Azarenka defeats Radwanska
Clijsters defeats Venus
Zvonareva defeats Mauresmo
Stosur defeats Serena

Quarters:

Safina defeats Jankovic
Dementieva defeats Wozniacki
Clijsters defeats Azarenka
Stosur defeats Zvonareva

Semis:

Dementieva defeats Safina
Stosur defeats Clijsters

Final:

Dementieva defeat Stosur

Safina will crumble like she always does.

Ivanovic will not win, she'll be out by at most the 4th round.

I'm predicting Serena.

Zvonareva/Chakvetadze could be a good second round match.

My rd of 16 predictions:

1 Safina vs 19 Schnyder (if schnyder beats streaky Safarova)
23 Lisicki vs 5 Jankovic
4 Dementieva vs 13 Petrova (could be any combo of the 4 seeds really)
6 Kuzzy vs 9 Woz
8 Azarenka vs 18 Li
Clijsters (is Clijsters beats Bartoli...if not i'll say Garrigues) vs 3 Venus
7 Zvonareva vs Wozniak or 10 Penetta
15 Stosur vs 2 Serena (although Bammer could prove a spoiler...she beat Serena earlier this summer)

Funny to see last year's #1 seed(Ivanovic) at #11 this year. Wonder if a #1 seed ever fell that far within one year.
A very recent example would be this year's French Open.
Last year Sharapova was #1 seed/rank. This year she dropped down to 102.
Though to be fair to Sharapova she did miss a lot of tennis inbetween.

Asking us to vote who will win a WTA Grand Slam is like entering the lottery. No one has a clue who is going to win.

Hmmm...my thoughts are:

*Sharapova will not get passed ElenaD
*For some reason, I'm not feeling Venus on this one (and I like her, too). I have a feeling she will go out early.
*While I do think it is Serena's to win or lose, I would love to see Glatch give her a scare (or even an upset) in the first round. If Serena doesn't take her seriously, then she may be in for a big surprise.
*Bartoli has gotten a look at Clijsters game, and may be much more ready for her. I think Kimmie will be ready, too, though! Go Kim!
*I like Lisicki to make some noise and get to the second week.

I think Serena will win.

But I'm hoping for either Jelena, Dinara, ElenaD!

I'd love to see Jankovic win this but I don't think she's back to top form yet. Then again after the French Open last year she had an iffy few months and then made the final of the US Open, so you never know.
If choking didn't exist, I'd pick Safina or Dementieva to win this event. Dementieva has proven that she can beat anyone in masters events, she completely owns Serena in them now, but facing her in a slam is a totally different story and she doesn't have the mental strength. I think Safina has more chance of winning but her nerves are always questionable.
Venus has no chance, she'll let Serena win again if they play each other.
Serena... I don't want her to win and she won't if everyone doesn't bow down and choke the matches against her away... but they probably will like at the AO. Still my gut says she won't win.
Ahh I give it, it'd be easier to just pick a name out of a hat.

I'm going with JJ. She's really impressed me with her win in Cincy and her play in Toronto. She's back to playing great defence and crushing that backhand down the line.

The Williams sisters are always the favourites but Venus has been a letdown this year and I think Serena's time is up. Safina obviously can't get it done in the majors and Kuznetsova has had an awful summer.

Maria is struggling too much with her serve in my opinion. She can't be double-faulting 15 times a match and expect to win the US Open. Clijsters has a great chance and the crowd will be behind her but I think she needs a bit more match-play.

Azarenka I'd love to see do well but her play has been inconsistent of late but if she does catch fire she could do a lot of damage. And....Dementieva would be a nice sentimental winner - I still think she's the best player to not have won a GS. She always disappoints me in the key moments though.

So...JJ for the win.

I would be happy if JJ won but admitedly quite surprised. She just doesnt have enough weapons to win a slam IMO, she is just too reliant on her defense and consistency, and needing others players unforced errors to win her matches.

excellent analysis! :)

It m/b a battle of the BFs, dementieva's vs. jankovic's ... but dementieva certainly did not disappoint in toronto last week!!!

i'd like to see lena win it! :D

Those 2 things (defense and consistency) haven't been there all year for her. she has 2 titles, but at the majors she hasn't made a QF this year and has lost to players she has no business losing to. In my prediction for the Open I see her getting to the 4th rd, but I really think Lisicki has a good chance to make the quarters here and take out JJ. JJ is not playing near as well as she was a year ago at this time, and it will take a little luck and a sudden resurgence for her to repeat her trip to the final this year.

Does anyone have a pic of this Dementieva bf? I'm very curious :)

He's Buffalo Sabres Right Wing Maxim Afinogenov.

I had some better pics of him last week when elena won toronto, but i already saved that tournament's pics to a flash drive.

If the part in red were not what everybody sees when they roll over this thread title with their mouse as they go down the page, maybe I would think it's a joke!

wait a minute ... it IS a joke ha ha ha*winky*

Serena has won 3 of the last 4 slams. What are you on about?

At times it's more interesting when no one has a clue who will win. As much as i like Federer i got a little bored of seeing the same guy win year after year at USO. Last year being an exception because he had no slams for '08 season til then. So i was really rooting for him.

They should just give 50 year old Navratilova the trophy as she deserves it more than all of these other jokes.

Do you realize the last woman to beat Navratilova (Karolina Sprem) is still an active player on today's tour, and she isn't exactly ranked very high? The only thing that determines who *deserves* titles are results.

Do you realize Martina in her late 40s was playing singles and taking sets off a top 10 player (Hantuchova), beating top 30 players (Panova) and winning main draw matches 6-1, 6-0 over top 100 players (that bum she played in the first round of Wimbledon in 2003). What does that say about the current womens field. Serena in her current shape and form would be winning zero slams in any other era than the current one. Yet by default she is winning everything again because the now clearly superior Henin retired and the rest suck. The field is so horrible Serena who sucks on clay these days nearly even won the French Open this year, LOL!

^^^Ahhh, a bitter Henin fan. Explains a lot.

Giving us scores from something that happened in 2003 really doesn't tell us very much about today's field, does it?

This thread is for people who *like* women's tennis. If you don't, fine...but don't ruin the thread for those of us who can discuss it like mature adults.

You know nothing about me. I am not even a Henin fan but fact is she was head and shoulders a better player than a way past her prime Serena before she retired and Serena is winning by complete default now since Henin is gone and the rest completely suck. If you think Serena in her current form and playing level would still be winning so much without Henin's out of nowhere retirement and the imcompetence of the rest of the field then you are 100% delusional. The most hollow slam titles in tennis history easily, as there is no other time in history other than 2008-2009 she could win so much (heck win anything) playing like she is now. Granted it is still better her win by complete default than the others since watching jokes like Demented one, Safina, and the other losers of the current WTA win them. Imagine pitting Serena of today up against Navratilova of 82-86, Graf 88-89 or 95-96, or the old Serena of 2002-2003. She would be getting destroyed, fed so many breadsticks and bagels she would probably explode.

Scores of 2003 tell us a great deal since the field in 2003 was in much BETTER than today. Serena might end up with more slams in 2009 than 2003 when she was 10 times the player in 2003 that she is today. So if the field was that bad even in 2003, imagine what it is today.

Wait...I think I have something just for you.....OH, here it is! :D

The WTA are the ones crying as they are the ones having a hard times staying afloat and once the Williams sisters leave (the only reasons left for anyone to care about the sad sack WTA) they will go bankrupt and be gone altogether unless some players of actual talent emerge. Real TALENT, not just incapable hacks like Dementieva, Safina, Azarenka, Wozniack, who everyone knows have 0% chance to ever win a slam if their life depended on it even with the weakest field in womens tennis history to go up against.

Do you remember who Navratilova lost to her last time at Wimbledon, the place she owned for so many years? Gisela freaking Dulko. How many Wimbledons has Dulko won, last I checked?

Yeah, Navratilova would be raking them in left and right if she was playing right now...get real.

Navratilova was in her late 40s for crying out loud. Serena Williams in her late 40s trying to play in Navratilova's era would lose 6-0, 6-0 in the 1st round of qualifying probably. The fact 47 year old Navratilova took a top 30 player to 3 sets and gave a top 100 player a bagel and breadstick already speaks to the embarassment of the womens tour today. Yeah that was 2003, like I said 2009 is actually much worse than 2003.

And you bring that up in a thread meant to discuss the 2009 US Open why? If you feel like that, make a thread a/b it, don't derail and hijack other threads w/ your bashing of the WTA.

That's right! It was Dulko...I always get her and Sprem mixed up. Sprem upset someone though...Serena? Venus?

Good catch JBF!

Sprem outplayed and overpowered Venus in that particular match and desered the win regardless of the goofy tiebreak incident. Mauresmo later that year said after being Sprem in 3 sets in Canada that she was the hardest hitter she had ever played. It is amazing how she has fizzled to nothing since. She is nothing but the early to mid 2000s Lucic clone. It looks like Vaidisova is now already dumped upon the "brainless big boob" tennis scrap heap along with Lucic and Sprem.

Where is this scrap heap and how do I get there? :)

I do admit Elena is the hot player right now. but on the wta tour they all have there hot moments. I am rooting for Serena to win as that's my favorite player but I just can't say at the moment. We will all just have to tune it. who knows maybe Bartoli will win lmao

That Sprem incident was awful. Some people debate that one point doesn't make a difference but to me............ it does anyone who plays tennis whether on a game or in real life in a tiebreak moment can change really quick. Who knows maybe the story could of been different but unfortunately that umpire was on snooze control. I bet he was awake after that match when he realized what he had done lol.

Venus still had set points in that tiebreak even with the extra point awarded to Sprem. What happened was appalling and unforgivable but I wouldn't fret about 'what if' because I think Sprem would've won regardless. Venus herself said after the match that she doesn't believe 1 point can decide the outcome of an entire match.

I hope for Dementieva, but she and all other eastern europeans are too inconsistent. It's very difficult to predict anything in WTA. So, the safest is to put your money on Serena. This is her best surface, is it?
