Womens 4th Round: Will venus destroy her sisters dream of the GS

Yes, that is what I think realistically. If a player will stop Serena from the possibility of a CYGS, it is hard to see how Venus would be the one to do it. It seems naïve to me. I think Azarenka would have a slightly better shot and she is not a blood relation whose family would benefit from the Serena CYGS money machine. Clearly the Williams sisters support their entire family.

You must be joking. One, who can assume who in the family is being "supported" (and is that assumption made for any other player's family??). Even if there was any truth to that, the Williams family's support was taken care of well beyond a decade ago between the millions made on and off court. No one is in need, and they are not playing for that, either.

It's not about money. It's about catching up to Graf's 22 slams. Or else Serena would not need to be still playing this stupid game.
It's always been about the money - Richard said the only reason he started the girls off in tennis was because he was channel surfing and stopped by the presentation after a WTA match - winner got $14k for the week. Forget prize money, think endorsement money.

She doesn't care about Graf - I'm sure she thinks she'd beat her, peak for peak (and probably would).

What do any of the Williams family do for a living? Of course Serena and Venus support that whole immediate family! I know they have made a lot of money but it does not compare to the amount of money they will make with the hype of a CYGS and then an actual CYGS win. A CYGS win would increase her earning power by $100 million or more. It would be crazy.

@THUNDERVOLLEY, did you forget the famous Patrick Ewing statement: "Yeah, we (NBA players) make a lot of money. But we spend a lot."

And you probably can't fathom this - but within the 1% World, there's always someone with more and that drives people to want more to try to catch up.

How was Kvitova the "one true threat" when PK has zero victories over Serena at Wimbledon? In fact, Serena has defeated Kvitova at Wimbledon twice--the second victory when Petra was defending champion.

Don't tell me you are like the TTW's worst stalker/troll who invested everything into Madrid?

I am not a psychic, but I am guessing it might have something to do with how one player can be a "threat" by almost beating another player, and having the tools to beat that player, although he or she might never have actually beat that other player. It's a judgment that depends upon realistic potential, not concrete historical results.

The comments here are strange. It's very hard to fake a tennis match. You could fake a double-fault by aiming just wide or long, or by hitting 2 first serves. But everything else is obvious to anyone who's watched more than a few tennis matches. As an example, watch the Azarenka-Bartoli dead-rubber YEC match from 2 or 3 years ago. Azarenka would run a tiny bit slower to not reach the ball. Eventually the crowd caught on and stopped cheering.

For some reason people want to still act like it's 1998 and Richard has control over a 35yo Venus.

2 time Wimbledon champion, doofus.

Your bitterness continues to amaze. Please find a useful outlet for it - like powering the planet.

Notice how you conveniently skipped over the specifics:

Kvitova was not a two time defending champion when SW beat her at the 2012 Wimbledon. Stop being so defensive over PK--it clouds your ability to see the details.

And that he ever, in fact, had control over the matches! At first I assumed people were joking, but it appears some are serious. No way is post Sjögren's Venus giving up her shot at another Wimbledon. Even if she were to do so, it would be in the final...why would she throw a R16 match when serena could get knocked out before the final, making them both losers. It really irks me that people assume the Williams sisters are corrupt, dishonest cheaters without any evidence. I think it's a pretty rude assumption. People that were just joking, I don't mean you.

And why is it assumed that the entire Williams family are a bunch of lazy, shiftless, freeloading layabouts? Everybody knows Richard had his own security business and Oracene was a nurse before they swtched careers to be tennis coaches (and they are now old and retired). Is it presumed that they are too stupid to have figured out how to invest their money? Simple google search shows that Isha is a lawyer, and Lyndrea is a web designer (Yetunde, deceased, owned a beauty salon and was a registered nurse). Do people assume all tennis players' families are mooches or is it Williams specific? Real question. Other than specific documented cases like poor ASV. I don't visit all the fan threads, so maybe this is a common assumption, but it seems pretty rude to me.

Their sister ISHA is a lawyer. Their sisters actually have jobs and support themselves. Maybe you should do some research into their family

The usual suspects do not care--the hate campaign is to apply the very stereotype you refer to, and you know the psychological source for that (the most evil and destructive of human failing). Nevermind innumerable players who are the breadwinner for entire families in tennis history. No--they do not exist for the usual suspects. As you point out, they assume the Williams family come from the the Right Wing stereotyping playbook: a freeloading, lazy black family who never worked a day in their lives, and have been a sponge to Venus & Serena all along. It is that kind of hardline stereotyping that for some, eventually becomes insufficient in containing it all, so they must exercise said hate with physical violence.

Yes, it is Williams specific to the usual suspects. Again, despite other players acting as the breadwinners for their families, that is never mentioned at all, so yes, to keep the "lazy, shiftless, freeloading layabout" stereotype you note at the top, it--like so many of the "crimes" pulled from somewhere below the belt, it is all about the Williams family.

Are most tennis players breadwinners for their families? I can understand some of them supporting the parents, since they often sacrifice a lot to make those careers happen, and are often performing actual work (coaching, management) that the player would be paying someone to do. I see any money "given" to parent coaches/managers as actually "earned" money. But are most players also supporting all their adult siblings as well?
