I think that as a tennis fan, you have a fair view. However, to halt the waning public interest in women's tennis (just look at the majority of half empty stadiums) there has to be at least a couple of players that are consistent on a regular basis at the majors - most of the general public don't care about other tournaments. To the OP you know you were going to get some backlash over this thread.lol
I wholeheartedly agree with you though. I’m a huge tennis fan, but I gravitate towards the WTA more than the ATP. Some of the posts here are yelling about consistency. It sounds like chaos, but I’d rather see inconsistency. I like watching a Tournament and having no idea who will win. I think that’s what makes women’s tennis exciting. ANYONE including a qualifier, can have a chance to win a title.
Wonder how Clijsters will do next year. If she comes out and crushes people, will we anoint this as another weak era on the WTA?
I hope she does well - the game needs her kind of celebrity/sportsmanship. I'm just not convinced she's fit enough - I hope I'm wrong as her actual strokes are a match for anyone.I wish Kim all the best and I genuinely hope she does well. I just don’t think she will be able to compete with so many newer/younger players. The game is probably even faster than she remembers.
The only WTA tournaments worth watching are the sunshine double and grand slams. Every masters 1000, grand slam, laver cup, and WTF, as well as certain 500s are must watch just because of the big 3. Men’s tour is infinitely better and will continue to be until Osaka Andreescu and Barty start to really dominate and grow personalities.Agree bits but the thread title is "Is Becoming" hence Muguruza and Ostapenko is irrelevant at this point.
If you look at the W/L percentage top 10 Ws and Ms at this current year, they are fairly consistent and about the same (min 30 matches) and 5th to 10 outperform the Mens compatriot by large.
Andreescu 0.889 | Nadal 0.887
Barty 0.833 | Federer 0.860
Serena 0.806 | Djokovic 0.852
Osaka 0.780 | Medvedev 0.757
Pliskova 0.769 | Thiem 0.735
Vondrousova 0.763 | Monfils 0.689
Kvitova 0.740 | Raonic 0.677
Halep 0.737 | Nishikori 0.674
Konta 0.700 | Bautista Agut 0.673
Kenin 0.696 | Tsitsipas 0.661
So I don't agree if you tell me that WTA is lacking of consistency vs ATP. If you talk of there is total domination of The 3 ATP players then yes, it's not the same as what Andreescu, Barty and Osaka (Let's omit Serena at this point) bring.
There are definitely other tournaments worth watching, however, for the general tennis fan you have a point. And for the general public (dips in to tennis) I'd say you're spot on.The only WTA tournaments worth watching are the sunshine double and grand slams. Forgot the Madrid/Rome premier combo since that has a good atmosphere, but I guess they're in a financial bind trying to put premier mandatory events on the schedule. There are definitely other tournaments worth watching, however, for the general tennis fan you have a point. Since 2014 the most dominant player is Halep and she is not marketable to carry the WTA alone.WTA lacks consistency in both quality and results. High profile players can't dominate and thus create fan bases and rivalries. In the past 20 Slams like in 90% of those you have a first timer as a SF. Ostapenko top 5 in 2017 is now 71. Muguruza is for a second straight year outside of top 10. Kvitova lacks major titles since 2012. Wozniacki is no where to be seen. Kerber is also outside top 10. Keys and Sloane also outside top 10. Most of those are in a prime age of 25-30.
Since 2014 the most dominant player is Halep and she is not marketable to carry the WTA alone. Also people outside America just don't like Serena and the way she is protected and forced as a GOAT.

Halep, has won 2 grand slam titles since 2014, Serena has won 6. How can Halep be more dominant than Serena since 2014?
Disclosure, I do like Halep, but I do have mixed feelings about Serena.
I don't want to be argumentative, but being a top 5 (Halep has been as low as #8 this year) does not make anyone dominant. She is the only one that is top 5 since then.

Being a top 5 for a long period makes you consistent, but not dominant, dominance has a different meaning.
WTA would improve a lot if they somehow remove the ball bashing from the woman matches and insert more variety - this means letting Serena go and choose some elegant youngster with a game ala Hingis.

She was overweight in the summer and I'm sure she's working to drop a couple of stone.@PDJ
Kimmie is a mere 36. And 36 apparently is the new 26. It has been something like 9 years since she competed regularly on the tour, but she has played the 2012 Olympics (with a QF finish) and some exhibitions more recently.
Don't know what she's done in the past 7 years to keep up her playng level and fitness. If she planning on returning, I suspect that she has been doing somewhat more than chasing kids around. At her peak, Kim was an exceptional mover. Even if she's lost a step, like Roger F, she would still be a very decent mover, like Roger.
In her prime, Kim played with some powerful and fast women -- the Williams sisters, Davenport, Henin, Mauresmo, Sharapova and others. Even played a bit with Graf. Hard to say how she will fare with the current crop of young players, given her age.
