I started playing USTA league tennis last year as a 3.5C on a 4.0 team (all my tennis friends are on a 4.0 team) mostly line 3 doubles and got my butt kicked quite a bit playing up and being new to playing doubles. I did a bit better this year and decided to try some tournaments. I signed up for a 3.5 doubles tournament but there were not enough entries so I switched to singles.
Well I managed to win the event (small draw) 13ish players, in 4 rounds. I was not seeded but was able to beat the #2 and #3 seed who are #3 and #8 ranked in 3.5 singles in the TX region. I learned a lot and playing in the 100F+ summer heat for all 4 matches was brutal. I think the next tournament I play will be in the fall.
It seems like there are 2 main types of players in 3.5. Guys that hit the ball fairly hard with good spin but poor control/consistency and pushers that hit tricky shots/angles etc. The #3 seed used a racquet with two handles, I've never seen that before. Overall it was a good experience, I may play some more singles this year.
