In NYC in the Northern Hemisphere we celebrate New Year's by dropping the apple at midnight. In Sydney or Melbourne in the Southern Hemisphere they should maybe fire an apple or maybe a Sewretchberry into the air to celebrate, no???

In Sydney we sit out in the patio, and breathe the humidity and watch the fireworks.

Sydney Greenstreet was Sewretchian heavy and played a few heavies in his very short (8 years) Hollywood career. Most remember him best for his role as a decadent crime boss in "Casablanca" opppsite Bogart and Bergman but he also starred with Bogart in "The Maltese Falcon" and "Passage To Marseille."

Sydney Greenstreet immediately reminds me of Peter Lorre.

Thanks for the interesting article on Gottlieb, Mike.

I suggest you purchase and modify a lorry to invite us over for an ultra marathon viewing party of all three Bogart/Greenstreet/Lorre collaborations. Only "The Maltese Falcon" does not also include the great Claude Rains, the one I always think of holding together "Casablanca" through the final scene suggesting the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Life goes on after the girl takes off.

USA Network had great U.S. Open coverage in the 1990s, and used to often run "Monk" ads at one point. They replaced the old, stuffy, too serious and humorless style of CBS with a much more fun, creative and vibrant approach. Vitas Gerulaitis played a big role in innovating tennis broadcasting, and current Palo Alto resident Ted Robinson was there as well.

The Collected Poasts of St Poobius of Assissi might help. They'll ward off premature insomnia and constipation as well.

Slim Pickens rode the bomb to Armageddon with as much enthusiasm as the San Poobiego Bageler expresses upon approach to a new AYCE buffet establishment called Phat Choosings.

Always great to see the closing scene simply for the dulcet tones of James Earl Jones in his very first movie role as copilot Lt. Lothar Zogg.

Q: What would happen if the occupants of 1600 P Avenue heard sewretch was dropping in for dinner ?

When Sewretch heard of the opening of the new AYCE buffet Phat Choosings he was so excite he had a premature evacuation. This may explain his long abstinence...the first evacuation was over La Decima and the second one now over a new gorging hole.

The pity party for all the other customers is over the slim pickings they will have after his AYCE raid.

Many vegetarians are surprised to learn how prevalent fermented fish sauce is in seemingly vegetarian dishes at Thai restaurants...

Stringertom & The Vortexians often are booked at gigs celebrating the opening of AYCE buffet restaurants and we always close our sets with a great tune inspired by Duran Duran, "Hungry Like The Sewretch."
