Cuban rum went so well with Coca Cola that the Castro rebels in the 50's named the cocktail "Cuba Libre."

Coca Cola's formula was created by a Southern gentleman named John Pemberton in the post-Civil War era to help with pain he endured from a saber wound to his chest suffered during battle. The first versions contained wine as well as extract from coca leaves but temperance laws enacted in Atlanta forced Pemberton to make a non-alcoholic version. No such action was necessary for the omission of the cocaine until the early 20th century, long after Pemberton sold his patent to Asa Candler and eventually died in poverty, still addicted to the opium he was trying to avoid using by switching to his magic elixir. Candler paid $550 for the formula. Pretty tidy profit, no?
