working out questions

    Why are the first 10 minutes of a workout so hard? Like today I did a 50 minutes workout on the exercise bike. It was a pretty intense workout - probably the longest I ever did on a bike, enough to burn a little over 700 calories an hour. I took a rest after 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and 40 minutes. The first ten minutes were really hard to get past. I felt kind of sick and every minute seemed to past by really slowly. After the first break, however, the next ten minutes felt easy, so I did a 20 minute ride after the second break. I could still feel soreness in my muscles, but I felt that it was pretty easy to go on compared to the first ten minutes. I checked my heartbeat and it was still going around 140/150, but there was no feeling of sickness. How come the first 10 minutes are so much harder? What do you guys do to motivate yourselves past the first 10 minutes? The success of my workout often depends on if I get past that first 10 minutes.

    Also, after doing cardio, how much are u spose to eat? I read the sites that Marius gave me. I know it is important to eat around 30 minutes after working out so your body doesnt break down your muscles for energy. Lets say I burned 500 calories in a workout. Should I eat 500 calories afterwards? Or can I eat 250 calories and still prevent my body from using amino acids as a source of energy?

    unless you can measure respiration rates at home on your treadmill there's no way to count how much calories you burnt

    The first 10 minutes are usually hard for me because my body is not warmed up. Usually I stretch a little and than start out slow on my cardio and build up pace. Don't start out at a fast pace, allow your body to adjust.

    I prefer treadmills over other forms of cardio equipment because it forces you to stay at a certain pace so it is very easy to get pas the first 10 minutes. Once I am warmed on the treadmill I than move to weights or other cardio equipment or sometimes I will just stay on the treadmill for an hour.

    Well, yes, say on stationary bike, start at level 7 if your target is 9. Also, in terms of pedals/min, start at 90 if you want to get to 105. Do that for 5 min to warm up, then enter gradually in your target area.
