world number 2 Halep said she won't play US Open

You are talking about the past here, and in any event it is all irrelevant to the question of travel.

France's deaths per capita are higher than America. In which French city was the epicenter over there? Paris?

And why are there not similar quarantining issues when flying into Paris? Are the French being reckless or is NYC being to restrictive?

NYC, with a population of 8 million, currently has less than 50 daily deaths. Doubtful that Paris is any better than that.

A few hours ago, Romanian media announced that Simona Halep would not attend the US Open, a story that has been reported by many media as an already confirmed issue. The fact is that, although it seems difficult for Halep to go to New York, the decision is not official, as confirmed by his communication team: "There is still nothing officially, but if the conditions remain the same, as Simona has commented, it is very unlikely to play".

She may be world no.2 and a slam winner, but she isn't a big enough name for TV schedulers to give a damn if she plays or not. Especially when Serena, the biggest name on the women's tour has confirmed she is playing. I don't even know what Venus is ranked these days, but she would still be a far bigger draw than Halep if she were to confirm playing.

Real lack of starpower on the women's side of the game now, especially with Sharapova's retirement. Aside from the Williams sisters, who really generates much attention now...maybe Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff?
where has it been reported Serena is playing ?

There has, however, been more deaths from the pandemic in New York than in the whole of France.

France has flattened the curve, whereas it is still rocketing up in America.

It’s fair for her not to want to travel all the way to NY and risk infection during travel to get to a tournament that she has very bad memories of for the past three consecutive years.
Things are very safe in NYC right now, probably the safest large city in the US. If the picture changes drastically between now and then, the Governer will likely not allow the event to proceed.

That is cherry picking data my dear.

There were more deaths in a few mismanaged NYC area nursing homes than the rest of America. You see, I can cherry pick too.

The indisputable fact is that France has higher deaths per capita than America.

The more relevant comparison would be current NYC and Paris. Have already posted that NYC is currently at less than 50 daily deaths. Population of 8 million...

Cannot find data broken down for Paris...

Are you claiming that current Paris numbers are better than 50 deaths out of 8 million NYC population?!?!

But it's really quieted down in New York. The US works more like a collection of smaller countries than one country. Skipping the USO because of spiking rates in Texas makes as much sense as skipping the French because of numbers rising in Greece

The protests will lose steam when people find something else to be distracted by, it won't take long. It's already happening in a lot of places
That’s not the only issues. I like this from Gaby Dabrowski, a doubles player.

Have a look at the NFL. Several Dallas Cowboys and Texans players tested positive. All it takes is one person to be sick to screw everything up. These people aren’t just teleporting from Romania, Greece, Australia, Brazil to the hotel in New York. They go through customs in their country, flight attendants and passengers on board, people at the airport where they land, drivers, people in the hotel. This pandemic is not under control. Look how quickly it spirals out of control, Beijing is looking at a second wave. I just think it’s irresponsible for this to go ahead.

If you put it like that ... the trouble with tennis is that the rewards are more speculative ... than they are for a football player on a contract.

She complains about having the doubles draw cut in half. Reducing doubles from six rounds to just three rounds.

What is the rationale for this?

Not that I am particularly interested in the doubles event, but if you wish to hold a doubles event, do it with the normal number number of rounds.

Who are the marbleheads in the U$TA coming up with these stupid rules?

The women's side has many interesting "stories" amongst its recent majors winners, and I feel fans will want to see how many of the aforementioned recent players will rise to the occasion to start adding majors, and as a result, raise their public profile.

Djoker or Rafa.
Perhaps. Or maybe the tennis PTB will use the pandemic as their own way of flexing its muscle over certain "name" players by making them feel obligated to play, or its essentiually handing majors over to those male players who were never going to win under normal circumstances.

People who are desperate to hold this slam so they can make some form of money when in reality it should be called off like Wimbledon was. It’s incredibly stupid, I still don’t think it’ll go ahead but if it does, there will unfortunately be an asterisk for all the champions. 3 matches to win a slam for the doubles? And then men’s and women’s draw without many top players. It’ll be an asterisk unfortunately.

A Masters and a Slam in quick succession, plus the added costs and the lowered income, equals corners having to be cut.

Seems like she’s given it more thought than the Party Boys of Belgrade.

Theory: TV doesn’t care about doubles because the potential TV audience doesn’t and this is a made for TV event. Just show the last few rounds. Have no more players around than you need or for any longer than you need. Save some money and reduce the virus risk.

As far as a “hiatus to explore new designs of how and where we play tennis” the indelicate situation is doubles is mostly along for the ride.

In terms of a tournament the function of doubles is to provide lead-in entertainment so that a day at the tennis is a whole day ... with all the added spending on food and drink that implies.

I see. And what is your comment on these distancing Parisians?
No wonder France's deaths per capita is higher than the U.S.

I'd be wary of comparing death rates for countries that are not at the same point in the process. France is currently at 453 deaths/million, and the US is at 360. Wait 6 months if you are comparing that figure. The story is not over.

That is true... But the utter lack of distancing in the Paris pic is still concerning, regardless of stage. That is way premature.
What are those people thinking?

They aren't thinking, and that's the point. With people it is one extreme or the other. People are either ostriches, just ignoring whatever danger is out there, or the are Chicken Littles. One extreme or the other.

Then you basically agree with the Sheriff. Anybody breaking in needs to be dealt with by homeowner, as the police do not have manpower to possibly respond to everyone during a riot.. Your only objection is with minor intruders.

My state, FL, is like Texas, so to me the kind of result you will get in a place like Queens is people open up and stop distancing is unknown. We are getting increased hospitalizations here as things open up. More cases is one thing - you're going to get that as you increase testing - but I would not personally want to visit NYC yet.
that’s fair. It’s interesting because I live in nyc and I would not want to be in Florida right now. New Yorkers are wearing masks and keeping the virus under control at the moment. The state’s percentage of infection is around 1.5% and lowering. We are lucky to have a Governor that follows the advice of epidemiologists though. From the looks of it New Yorkers are quite happy having the city to themselves this summer.

Serena better win if the field is weakened then. This would even the score a bit versus Court's 11 Aussie Opens against less than full fields. The French should proceed as well. Serena could win both break the record and get back to having a second child if that is their plan.

You also have to consider many other factors like demographics (France has an older population than the US), and different population densities... New York was always going to be hit the hardest in the US, while a place like Wyoming can get away with much fewer restrictions.

There are so many factors, but certainly one of them is population density. Perhaps the greatest mystery to me so far is India, with 9 d/m. Do we trust that numbers? China has been listed as 3 for months. If you believe that, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

Not quite that much. A private Netjets flight from Paris to NYC is $90,000, which is nothing to her.
Both directions. ;)

And, no, even for a player like her that is not "nothing", otherwise she would be doing it more often. It is nothing for someone like Murray and above. Sure, she is doing very well for herself, but to blow 150 K on a flight? Anyway, I said that there are other things that probably bother her more.
