Typically the worst YE conversation begins and ends with Gustavo Kuerten in 2000.

Guga's final ranking was achieved by winning the French Open, WTF and a Masters with 2 additional Masters Finals. His performance at the other 3 Slams was abysmal (1-3-1 exits).

Roddick's year was backed by a USO victory and 2 Masters achieving the Open Series Triple Crown. He also made semifinals at Wimbledon and Australia.

Both men squeezed out on top in 3 horse races. Fed & Ferrero for Roddick and Safin & Sampras for Kuerten.

Main difference lies with WTF and additional Masters runner-up against an extra Masters title and two deep Slam runs. Close call.

Guga was “worse” (difficult to talk about something negative when a player ends the season #1); he only won 9 grand slam matches all season

Roddick: 72-19, 6 titles, 2 RUs, 1.28 dominance ratio
1 slam title, 2 TMS, Queens

Wimby SF, AO SF, RG, 1st round; 17 GS match wins
YEC: SF
6 wins vs. top 10

GUGA: 63-22, 5 titles, 2 RUs, 1.17 dominance ratio
1 slam title, 1 TMC, 1 TMS; two RUs both at TMS events

USO, first round, Wimby, 3rd round, AO, first round; 9 GS match wins
YEC: Win
10 wins vs. top 10

Would argue the guy who finished #1 only a year later was worse. As was Sampras's final tilt as YE no. 1.

Guga beat Sampras and Agassi back to back to seal YE #1 and win the WTF, and not many people can say they pulled off that in their careers. He may not have have performed well in the other Slams but he won Roland Garros, the WTF and Hamburg. Hewitt in 2001 didn't do all that great in the Slams either besides his USO title (only making 1 other QF) and won the WTF. He won no Masters titles and still ended #1 so my vote goes to him. Guga and Andy's seasons were better.

The answer is Sampras 1998.

Yeah, weak sauce for a YE#1. 4 tournament wins in 22 tournaments played (1 major, 2 500 equivalents, 1 250 equivalent) 11-9 against the top 20, 6 wins against the top 10 and only 1 top 10 win in his 4 tournament victories, only 1 win against a top 5 player (YEC RR), and didn't win a single important hard court tourney. Here is also a list of some players that scalped him that year: Ramon Delgado and Kucera at the slams, Corretja indoors, Woodforde, Leander Paes, Stoltenberg, young Haas, Agassi when he was a wildcard and coming off his worst year, Santoro who beat him 1 and 1, Muster on HC, and Ferreira twice.

Both sucked.

Guga sucked more because Clay court tennis sucks mostest.

That was when grass was still unpredictable. He also won the WTF which was B05 back then and MS-1000 titles didn't even hold the same importantance they do today in 2001.

And for being a weaker No. 1 than Roddick or Guga he is the only one of them to hold it for over a year.

Why is Roddick even considered in this? SF finish or better in 3 slam events that year (2003)? Also, won Cincy & Montreal.
Respectable showing at IW, Paris & WTF as well. 8 finals with 6 titles in all for 2003.

What about McEnroe in 1982? No Major titles and 5 titles at Philadelphia, Wembley, Tokyo Indoor, Sydney Indoor, and San Francisco. Didn't even play the Australian Open (understandably) or the French Open.

On 98 Pete & 82 McEnroe:

Sampras98: Very weak year all around. Rafter was the only legitimate contender with USO triple crown but his 2 extra titles were 250 equivalent and WTF saw Corretja beat Moya.

McEnroe82: Had an 89%. He won 3 Masters equivalents, made both Year End Tournament Finals and Wimby Final and USO semi. Connors with 2 Slams jumps out but he only played one pf the year end tournies getting to semi-final and didn't win a single Masters. He also didn't play AO or FO same as John.
