Worst Alcaraz loss against Djokovic?

Which one?

Alcaraz currently holds a 5-5 H2H against Djokovic, which, in my view, is very telling considering how big the age difference between them is (several tennis generations).

All of his 5 losses were fairly disappointing if you are Alcaraz fan in their own way.

Here we will try to reach a consensus on which of Alcaraz’s losses is the most disappointing though, and provide arguments. I’ll start.

1. Roland Garros 2023
Certainly a disappointment. It was always believed that Alcaraz plays his best on clay, even before he had results to prove it. Old Djokovic during a hot day on Chatrier, what else do you need to win, right? Wrong, I guess. After this match I started to get disillusioned by Alcaraz, but I guess cramps can somewhat excuse him, as they can be fairly unpredictable.
7/10 disappointment

2. Cincinnati 2023
On paper this match wasn’t significant, and Alcaraz wasn’t a favourite here either. A 4-6 3-6 loss would’ve been fairly forgettable and excusable due to the surface serving Djokovic better, but the way Alcaraz lost it was… let’s just say unexpected.
5/10 disappointment

3. ATP Finals 2023
A landslide loss on indoor hardcourt, where Alcaraz to this day hasn’t shown anything of note. This one I would say has the weakest case to be considered the worst.
2/10 dissapointment

4. Olympics 2024
Now we got to the losses I view as inexcusable. Alcaraz is already an RG champion here, Djokovic is even older than when they played at RG AND he is playing after some recent surgery. Alcaraz played unserious tennis, couldn’t return anything, the clutch was nowhere to be found. The only possible excuse you can even make here is the match being BO3, and that on a longer stretch Alcaraz would prevail, which I highly doubt.
7.5/10 disappointment

5. Australian Open 2025
This one tops the list for me. BO5, even older Djokovic than before, slow night conditions, Alcaraz takes the first set AND to top it off Djokovic is injured. Alcaraz got completely discombobulated by Djokovic’s usual gimmicks, but even if we give Alcaraz a discount for that, there is still no excuse in the world for him not even extending any of the 3 sets he lost against an injured opponent. This loss closed the topic for me on whether Alcaraz can ever participate in GOAT debate, even if he proceeds to win 30 Slams. If, at this point, prime Alcaraz couldn’t beat the worst version of Djokovic possible, then no version of Alcaraz would ever beat prime Djokovic in BO5, anywhere.
10/10 disappointment

This is a painful thread. What a scathing indictment of the Juan Carlos Ferrero era when laid out like this. 5 nearly unforgivable losses, and a 2-5 H2H from 2023 to AO 2025. Horrific. I now remember all the visceral emotion and hatred I felt towards JCF after these.

In terms of classification:

Most humiliating: cramping at RG 2023 and losing 1-6, 1-6. This cramping has repeated itself numerous times so it’s hard to call it a freak accident either. JCF needed to find a solution and he was unable to.

Most embarrassing: AO 2025. Enough said, really. One of the worst losses of all time. Not only was he outclutched and out-thought and all that, he was outmoved and I believe outfought. His plan failed and he was rendered helpless.

Most one-sided: ATP Finals. Looked like a pub player. Never close to a win whatsoever.

Most infuriating: Cincy 2023 choke. He had this match in his hands numerous times. He cramped again in this match, as well, proving that the RG 23 issue would repeat itself and exposing JCF’s preparation once again. It also ruined him physically leading to the Medvedev loss at USO.

Most damning: Olympics 2024. I mean, the singular worst returning performance on clay from any ATG ever. And nearly entirely self inflicted due to braindead return positioning and gameplanning. This is when I knew JCF’s head would eventually be put on a stick, and it was only a matter of when, not if.

JCF had to go. He absolutely had to.

I don't know, but my favorite loss happened at the Olympics.

Superb response!

I am glad I never got fully on the Alcaraz train, as especially the last 2 would make my life as a fan hell for at least a couple of days.

Clueless, simply clueless. Alcaraz has such an immense potential as a tactical player, yet he prefers to be Shapovalov so often. Dumb show off.

French 2023 was when gotten to was unleashed on the world. I remember it well.

Alcaraz was so infuriatingly bad in AO 2025 match that it was even funny. I was legit laughing and texting to @HetTheGreaterer how Djokovic is making a mockery of Alcaraz.

This whole thread is nonsensical.

1. Djokovic is the current GOAT, so it’s natural for Alcaraz to lose to Djokovic.

2. Alcaraz has defeated Djokovic in 3 slam finals already

3. Players can reach their prime and/or peak at any age, the usual culprit being 24-25 but it can be 20 or 30, and you can peak again at any age throughout your career.

4. Players get stronger and stronger, things change / evolve.
If Alcaraz goes on to surpass all of Djokovic’s records and becomes the new GOAT, it goes to show just how good Djokovic is at tennis.

I like how the top 3 threads are casting a shadow on Sinner/Alcaraz. Fonseca era can’t come soon enough.

If a few losses in the later rounds of tournaments would make your life hell and think twice about being a fan, I suggest you not be a fan of anyone.

It's not like other players do better against Djokovic or suffer fewer tough losses

I don’t need suggestions, I’ve been around for a long time already. If you can’t understand the over-the-top emotions of your favourite team/player losing/winning a Grand Final against a principal opponent then you’ve missed a lot!

I'm just saying basing allegiances on whether a player wins or not/ the fear of tough losses is a very shallow way of being a fan.

And if it does hurt it makes my suggestion even more valid. Don't be a fan of anyone.

I was never a fan of Alcaraz to begin with, my sentence that got you upset was a would be based on the fact that I’ve been a fan of someone previously. And no, losses never made me rethink my allegiances, you completely misread it.

Sorry I wasn't upset.

And the way you talk directly suggests that you evaluate whether to be fan due to fear of tough losses. If you're backing out from that characterization now, I understand.

When I say I was disillusioned by Alcaraz what I’m referring to is the fact that I used to view him as a Big3-level player, but was very wrong on this one. Might not be obvious.

Wimby 23 sure, which others? He clearly didn’t have the form to win Wim 24/USO 25 at all. What is your view of the AO Final this year?
Wimbledon 2023 was probably shocking from a Djokovic fan perspective. Never lost a Wimbledon final in a decade, not even to Federer, and now he loses to the guy he didn’t even notice at RG a month prior?

RG 2023-WB 2023 sequence made no sense. It’s as if Federer won RG in 2006 and Nadal won Wimbledon.

Wow! Alcaraz is not supposed to lose to anyone? If he can lose to Zverev, Meddy or Van de sanschulp he can lose to Djokovic.

Now show me who your favorites lost to at the majors before they reached the age of 22?
Of course he can and will lose. It’s still valid to try to specify the worst loss in a certain category, in this case, against Djokovic.

The view of Alcaraz and his capabilities based on these losses is entirely my own, no need to agree.

@The Blond Blur Why Olympics? Want to know the argument.
I have several reasons. For starters, Carl had just won RG and Wimby back to back. This included a straight set thrashing of Joker in the latter. Joker was also well below his 2023 form which was already a major step down from his peak years. Joker was 37 years old and had just recovered from knee surgery 2 months prior. He was also on his worst surface. It didn’t help that Carl came into the match overconfident and said he wanted to put on a show for Spain…only to lose in straight sets.

Nothing can get worse than a 24 year old losing to a near 39 year old in five sets. Cahill needs to go. And don’t forget, Madrid.

AO 2025 and Olympics stand out as two where Alcaraz looked genuinely outmatched and lacking ideas in how to mount a comeback.

If it comes to choose 1 match it has to be gold medal match.
That was Novak last chance to win.
And best player of present times Alcaraz was also in good form coming to finals.
Maybe carlos was overwhelmed by the occasion but Novak played as he was possessed.
I will say Novak gave everything he had to win that match.

Personally the most telling moment in Djokovic vs Alcaraz match up or even Big 3 vs Alcaraz match up is the first set of this year's final.

Djokovic came out playing a brand of tennis that was quintessentially the type Big 3 at their best brought in their finals. Aggression, variety and control.

Alcaraz looked totally outgunned and outplayed, and he had zero answers. Had Djokovic's age not come into play and stopped him from playing at this intensity for next few sets, Alcaraz would have been toast.

Both Alcaraz and Sinner hate it when their opponents start to match their rally tolerance and then amp up their aggression. Which is why Medvedev before his slump was able to beat them in slams.

That's one of the reasons why I always feel Nadal at his best is also well beyond reach for both Sinnercraz. At his best , Nadal dictates rallies and he drags his opponent around. Fraud on fast surfaces will probably their biggest nightmare match up , Huge serve + totally unpredictable rallies.

True. That's why as good as Sincaraz are, they aren't on big 3 level for me.

Novak is 14 year older than SINNER and 16 year older than ALCARAZ.
It is not Federer like 6 year age gap.
To fight out Sinner alcaraz at this age is too big ask for even Novak.

I'll do it for him 8-B

Nadal losses at the grand slams till the age of 22:

2004 : AO lost to Hewitt in 3, 3rd round. Missed RG with foot injury ( they say he's robust lol). Missed wimby( because he's durable). USO lost to to Roddick in 3, second round.
2005 : AO lost to Hewitt again, a washed up Hewitt who finished the season with 2.5k points which is 5k today, Wimby lost to Gilles Müller remember him ? 2nd round. USO lost to James blake 3rd round.
2006: AO ( injured again because you know he's durable), Wimby lost to Roger I won't give him a hard time here, USO lost to Michael Youzny - They want to give Carlos a hard time for losing to old Novak :-D
2007: AO lost to Fernando Gonzalez who finished the year with 2k(4k today), Wimby fed OK, USO 4th round to Ferrer
2008 AO lost to Tsonga, USO lost to Murray.

Don't come here acting like losing to an old Novak is an embarrassment or anything. Let me remind you that old Roger owned Nadal at the age of 37 remember that ? Novak is a special player like Roger he was abe to play in his late 30's.
What's more embarrassing ? old federer owning Nadal or young carlos losing to old Djokovic @Yugram

Here you can see the poll predictions on this forum for those matches.

Alcaraz was:

88 votes to 30 favourite at Olympics 2024 (75.6% win chance)
121 votes to 70 favourite at RG 2023 (63.35% win chance)
72 votes to 44 favourite at AO 2025 (62.1% win chance)
31 votes to 34 underdog at YEC 2023 (47.7% win chance)
42 votes to 93 underdog at Cincinnati 2023 (31.1% win chance)

For both Alcaraz and Sinner, their worst loses were the AO 2025 and 2026 matches.

They shouldn't be losing in best of five to a player who is on average 15 years older than them when they are multiple time slam champions and at the height of their careers, and the other guy is approaching 40.

I agree that Carlos shouldn't lose that match to a 38 yo Novak. But you gotta admit it isn't that bad. Old Roger, past 37 pushed Nadalovic and even owned Nadal...so what are we trying to say here ?
This is just a pathetic attempt to discredit Carlos so he doesn't get compared to the big 3 by we know who.

Djokovic and Nadal were also in their 30s. The gap between Djokovic and the dynamic duo is on average 15 years, its not the same.

And I am talking in the context of this thread and the matches he lost when compared directly to each other.

Early 30's is as close to prime as earl 20's. Especially in the case of Novak who enjoyed his best years very close to 30.

Losing to a 38 yo Federer because you're in your early 30 is really not a strong argument especially coming from your position. Remember how you told me every week matters when you get to that age (late 30s)?? So which one is it ? Lol

Are you telling me that playing someone who has an average of five years gap is the same as playing someone who has an average of fifteen years?

And seriously, what is your issue here? Isn't this thread about comparing Alcaraz losses to each other? What is worse than losing a best of five when you are multiple time slam champion? You think it should be another loss?

I'm just pointing out the inconsistencies in the agenda , I didn't think it was a sensitive subject lol. I distinctly remember you telling me that even a few weeks difference makes a huge difference when you get to your late 30's when we were comparing old Roger and old Novak ( Roger 19 season and Novak 25 season ).

full disccusion here:

No issue , as I explained early 20's is not different to ealry 30's as it pertains to prime. So big 3 fans trying to frame it as somthing that wouldn't happen to the big 3 is false.

Again, tell me what loss is worse for Alcaraz, if not the AO 2025.

Keep in mind, my focus is ONLY on comparing Alcaraz's losses to each other here.

You want to know my agenda, my agenda is focused on this thread to show that the worst loss was not RG 2023 or Olympics 2024, it was in fact AO 2025, a match at that stage of his career he should have never lost.

So what is the worst loss for you?

I'm not interested in talking about Alcaraz vs Big 3 here. Its Alcaraz vs Alcaraz.

I was talking about big 3 fans who try to discredit Carlos when I referred to agendas , not you. We disagree on a few things but I find you reasonable among TTW posters with big 3 cultist who wage war against each other.
I can tell you like tennis , you actually talk about other stuff than big3 wars.

My only interest in this thread was to showcase the double standard in it, I already answered the OP.
