Worst Alcaraz loss against Djokovic?

Which one?

If they were peers, Djokovic would never lose to Alcaraz in matches of importance.

Alcaraz may have otherworldly racquet skills, but his fitness is below average for a top player. As is Sinner's. Djokovic is miles ahead of them physically and mentally, even in his veteran years.

I thought AO25 was the most humiliating loss.

If they were peers Carlos would be 15-5 against Novak right now lol. Novak wasn't this good at 22 let's not rewrite history. Same for Roger. Nadal would be close though, with clay going Nadal's way , HC to Carlos and grass a toss up.

Young Djokovic had to face peak Fedal. Alcaraz and Sinner broke through an empty field in comparison.

I did a season by season breakdown of the big 3 v carlos on their 1st 5 season on tour at the dame age btw... It's not even close Djokovic didn't have to play federer at every round in every tournament. Also the field wsn't stacked in the naughties.

Not even Novak bots tried to fight the argument that djokovic was a better player from 18 years of age to 22 y.o. compared to Carlos. Is that the claim you're making ?

He's also the greatest ever. 1st Wimbledon loss was terrible. Novak should've won that in straights. And this last one, losing to inferior hc player just because you've got no fuel? Infuriating.
That may be on the CV but I'm surprised he's been doing anything recently to drive such a strong desire to see it reap the biggest rewards.

No claim at all. The scenarios are very different. I find it embarrassing for Alcaraz, great young player, firmly etablished, to lose important matches against Oldvak. And I am not sure Alcaraz would have had success at this young age against peak Fedal.

His most lackluster performance was at the AO25.
His most regrettable loss was at the RG23 (which was effectively the final).

As for the other matches, they were either ones where defeat seemed inevitable or simply close contests.

・Even if YEC had been in top form, he probably would have lost anyway.
・He went on to win in Cincinnati two years later, and that was just a Masters event to begin with.
・As for the Olympics, both players put on a great show, so the honor outweighs the disappointment.

He pulled Alcaraz's pants down in that one lol

Again, djokovic didn't play 99 federers on tour when he got there in 2005...He was bouncing in second and 3rd rounds for while so I fail to see how federer comes into this. Alcaraz was simply the better player early on. Carlos at 19 defeated nadal, djokov zverev back to back to back ...just before his 19th birthday. 19 yo Novak lost in the 2nd round in every masters and slam that year to some randos.

Yes, what an “amazing show” it was to send every other return into Row Z and make it look like you were playing Ivo Karlovic by trying and failing 4 different return positions. Like I said, the singular worst returning performance from any ATG on clay of all time.

I'll do it for him 8-B

Nadal losses at the grand slams till the age of 22:

2004 : AO lost to Hewitt in 3, 3rd round. Missed RG with foot injury ( they say he's robust lol). Missed wimby( because he's durable). USO lost to to Roddick in 3, second round.
2005 : AO lost to Hewitt again, a washed up Hewitt who finished the season with 2.5k points which is 5k today, Wimby lost to Gilles Müller remember him ? 2nd round. USO lost to James blake 3rd round.
2006: AO ( injured again because you know he's durable), Wimby lost to Roger I won't give him a hard time here, USO lost to Michael Youzny - They want to give Carlos a hard time for losing to old Novak :-D
2007: AO lost to Fernando Gonzalez who finished the year with 2k(4k today), Wimby fed OK, USO 4th round to Ferrer
2008 AO lost to Tsonga, USO lost to Murray.

Don't come here acting like losing to an old Novak is an embarrassment or anything. Let me remind you that old Roger owned Nadal at the age of 37 remember that ? Novak is a special player like Roger he was abe to play in his late 30's.
What's more embarrassing ? old federer owning Nadal or young carlos losing to old Djokovic @Yugram
The salt is pouring through the screen.

Don’t worry, maybe when Djokovic will be 43 Alcaraz will finally have a positive H2H record against him. And will be able to beat him on clay. Maybe. :sneaky:

I just stated the facts I dunno how that makes me salty.
I'm not the one making threads to pick holes in Nadal's game.

No picking holes, simply the worst/most disappointing loss. I can do this with Nadal easily too, though the thread isn’t about him, you brought him up.

I would separate his career in 3 parts

Pre-2010: I would say USO 2008 SF to Murray. Nadal was certainly going to beat Federer in the final that year had he won SF.

2010-2016: Easy one. Wawrinka AO 2014.

2017-2022: It’s close between 2 matches, but I guess in hindsight WB 2018 to Djokovic was worse, as Nadal still managed to win AO later.

Roland Garros his body let him down. You can argue he should have been better prepared, but never having been in such a position before it seems forgivable.

I have no memory of the ATP Finals one. What's the big deal?

The other two are both bad, but if memory serves, I don't think Novak put his hat on for the Gold Medal match? He did have it on in Cincinnati (though I think it was coming on and off depending on his mood) and losing to Hatovic is just unforgivable.

Personally the most telling moment in Djokovic vs Alcaraz match up or even Big 3 vs Alcaraz match up is the first set of this year's final.

Djokovic came out playing a brand of tennis that was quintessentially the type Big 3 at their best brought in their finals. Aggression, variety and control.

Alcaraz looked totally outgunned and outplayed, and he had zero answers. Had Djokovic's age not come into play and stopped him from playing at this intensity for next few sets, Alcaraz would have been toast.

Both Alcaraz and Sinner hate it when their opponents start to match their rally tolerance and then amp up their aggression. Which is why Medvedev before his slump was able to beat them in slams.

That's one of the reasons why I always feel Nadal at his best is also well beyond reach for both Sinnercraz. At his best , Nadal dictates rallies and he drags his opponent around. Fraud on fast surfaces will probably their biggest nightmare match up , Huge serve + totally unpredictable rallies.
Very true. I’m not a Djokovic fan, but for historical reference it’s very good that he lasted long enough to demonstrate Sinner/Alcaraz place in the conversation.

His returns are poor—but that's all.
It's the same as saying that just because Roger's serve count in AO09 was poor, it doesn't mean he was in bad form overall.

Superb response!

I am glad I never got fully on the Alcaraz train, as especially the last 2 would make my life as a fan hell for at least a couple of days.

Clueless, simply clueless. Alcaraz has such an immense potential as a tactical player, yet he prefers to be Shapovalov so often. Dumb show off.

Lol

Maybe cause I'm a fan of a Spanish 2nd Division who barely scaped relegation to 3rd Div club but I know what hell as a supporter is. Probably Sasha fans -if he's got any- experienced that for muuuch longer. Heck Sinner's fans as well

What I know is that Raz has given me way more ups than downs, including (but not exclusively; I mean: Madrid, IW, Beijing, Rome...) WB 2023/2024, RG 2025 or USO 2025. Even the recent AO 2026 got an unexpected happy ending, given how hard cramps got him during SF

As to your poll, Kralingen summed it up pretty nicely, it depends on the definition. Most one sided: ATP F. Most inexcusable: AO '25. Hardest to swallow? Probably Paris

Am i the only one who voted RG 23.

Had higher expectations here but on second thoughts shouldn't have been so harsh because of cramps

I have several reasons. For starters, Carl had just won RG and Wimby back to back. This included a straight set thrashing of Joker in the latter. Joker was also well below his 2023 form which was already a major step down from his peak years. Joker was 37 years old and had just recovered from knee surgery 2 months prior. He was also on his worst surface. It didn’t help that Carl came into the match overconfident and said he wanted to put on a show for Spain…only to lose in straight sets.
This match is by far the most infuriating loss from Alcaraz vs Djokovic.

Some might say Australian Open 2025 due to the circumstances and I think Alcaraz was naïve that he fell for the Djokovic possum tricks here.

However, there was simply no excuse to lose to Djokovic at the Olympics 2024 as he was the massive favorite to win the Gold Medal (we'll see if it turns out to be his only real shot). It seems to me he was overconfident and already saw the finish line before the match started while Djokovic prepared himself to extreme measures to win it all.

Are you telling me that playing someone who has an average of five years gap is the same as playing someone who has an average of fifteen years?

And seriously, what is your issue here? Isn't this thread about comparing Alcaraz losses to each other? What is worse than losing a best of five when you are multiple time slam champion? You think it should be another loss?

Peak in tennis is a curve. Difference from 38 to 32 is much greater than from 32 to 24 while being a smaller age gap.

Raz last lost to a 37yo Novak who happens to be the greatest 37yo to ever play ball. Since then he beat him twice pretty comfortably, last one in another GS F to make it 3-0 there.

I don't think AO 2026 was that comfortable, he was the better player overall however he took some heavy hits also, but USO 2025 Alcaraz was phenomenal and Djokovic was outplayed.

The Big 3 mythology grows larger every day

This is a painful thread. What a scathing indictment of the Juan Carlos Ferrero era when laid out like this. 5 nearly unforgivable losses, and a 2-5 H2H from 2023 to AO 2025. Horrific. I now remember all the visceral emotion and hatred I felt towards JCF after these.

In terms of classification:

Most humiliating: cramping at RG 2023 and losing 1-6, 1-6. This cramping has repeated itself numerous times so it’s hard to call it a freak accident either. JCF needed to find a solution and he was unable to.

Most embarrassing: AO 2025. Enough said, really. One of the worst losses of all time. Not only was he outclutched and out-thought and all that, he was outmoved and I believe outfought. His plan failed and he was rendered helpless.

Most one-sided: ATP Finals. Looked like a pub player. Never close to a win whatsoever.

Most infuriating: Cincy 2023 choke. He had this match in his hands numerous times. He cramped again in this match, as well, proving that the RG 23 issue would repeat itself and exposing JCF’s preparation once again. It also ruined him physically leading to the Medvedev loss at USO.

Most damning: Olympics 2024. I mean, the singular worst returning performance on clay from any ATG ever. And nearly entirely self inflicted due to braindead return positioning and gameplanning. This is when I knew JCF’s head would eventually be put on a stick, and it was only a matter of when, not if.

JCF had to go. He absolutely had to.
This encapsulates it all so well.

OG24
it mattered most to both players. raz was crushed after lost. he won RG and W B2B. won easily vs nole in W F. nole did surgery just a few months ago. he had very big pressure on him as it was his last realistically chance for OG. not in form, not full healthy, his worst surface and conditions.

They’re all bad, because outside of the YEC one, Alcaraz should have won them all.

I voted Cincinnati purely because I don’t think the others happen if that one hadn’t. The only Alcaraz loss from a match point up in a final. Novak got into his head there and didn’t let go until USO last year. Olympics and AO were just an embarrassing display of brain dead tennis, although it bears repeating that he was just 21 years old in both matches

I suppose RG would be that, given he started severely cramping due to sheer nerves. In other losses at least he was healthy and lost normally.

Looks like Olympics is the consensus pick. I remember the times when Olympics was rendered an insignificant mickey mouse event on this forum. Times change, I guess!

I mean, it’s worse to lose against geriatricovic when healthy. Less frustrating, but a bigger stain on his resume. The Olympics loss is especially bad because he had already reached his prime and was the big favorite, and he obliterated Djoker a few weeks earlier in a slam final.

I don’t think anyone judges a player’s career by whether they won OG. Zverev won it and what difference did that make? Winning a slam was still more important. And does anyone even remember Massu?

But for the players OG is something very special. They are playing for their country. In the case of 2024 Olympics the expectation was that Alcaraz, who had just won RG, would win again at the same venue a few weeks later. But he didn’t.

The worst is definitely AO, got a free lesson from a 38-year-old Novak at the slam. There is no excuse for the new tennis superstar to lose convincingly to the ancient injured Novak.

The hardest OI, meaningless messages to the Spanish nation that he will make Spain happy on Sunday and bring gold, only to be destroyed in two sets against the one-legged Novak.

Nothing will top 2025 AO. He dominated the 1st with aggressive tennis that overwhelmed Djokovic then inexplicably whether by Ferrero's direction or on his own played incredibly passive as if he was in awe of Djokovic the next three sets and let him blow him off the court. I'll never understand his tactics in that match.

The Cincy match was a classic in which both played well, same with the Olympics to a lesser extent and Cramparaz at the French likely doesn't beat Djokovic anyway. That AO match he fumbled, plain and simple.

Yeah, it’s all understandable, but I still find it funny how much shade Olympics got before Djokovic won it.

I wonder why Sinner never played it! Can there be any reason?

I was salty that Djokovic couldn't win the Olympics for years and so happy when he somehow won it. I admit it. I still have the YEC above Olympics though.

Speaking honestly, I would’ve liked if Nadal won 1 Meme Finals. 2019 was the moment, he was better there than Tsitsipas, but got screwed by the three 2-1 situation. But I’m more than comfortable with the fact he didn’t. Fan wars aside, everyone understands that there is no way Nadal wouldn’t win at least 1 in literally any other conditions except for those that rendered every strength of his game useless.

Woah woah woah, this is ridiculous. The guy has 7 slams and the career slam, why are we acting like he's some random bum?

Furthermore, why are we acting like Djokovic, even old Djokovic, is some random bum to lose to.

He deserved to win at least one YEC, but it is what it is.

Because he is 16 years older and prone to injuries.
It is not normal for multiple slam winners to lose slam matches against such an opponent.

Well, Djokovic isn't a normal 38 year old.
He lost one slam match to him at full health. He's won the other 4 slam matches they played. 4-1 the last 3 years on all three surfaces. Alcaraz is more vulnerable in Best of 3 but Best of 5 he's money generally.

Also, as Rafa’s long time fan, I wish hed chosen someone else to play doubles with at the Olympics. Carlos was emotionally drained when they lost.

25 AO would've been a runaway answer for me, but the Sinner defeat at AO 26 makes it seem a bit better in hindsight.

AO 2025 was really the only loss that shouldn't have happened. Djo and his docs got the recovery 'program' right for it though. Alcaraz is already a better player at the same age than Djo, so more to come unless injuries prevail.

If you watch that 2008 USO match against Murray, you see that Rafa was completely burned out. He was literally walking during some points which was unbelievable especially considering that during 2005-2009 he was at his best physical shape.
That clay and grass seasons and then winning in Canada killed him. Oh and he won the OG between those tournaments as well!
