Worst excuse you’ve seen for a bad performance?

Tomic made up some crap excuse when he tanked in his loss to Andy Roddick in the 2012 US Open, something about all the celebrities in the crowd distracting him.
didn't bernie also complain to be scheduled after 8pm when he was younger?
(... maybe that was before getting into wild nightclubbing?)

Not sure what your point is. They were both used as bizarre excuses for his defeats. The timing of such statements and who said them wasn't specified in this thread.

There's a difference between making an excuse after the match and making up some BS to sell your book more than a decade later.

LOL, hypocritical much from Davy? Then why did he participate?

Yes and around that time, it seemed like he was playing almost every week. He had played in 32 tournaments (plus Davis Cup ties throughout the year) in 2006, and Sydney was already his 2nd tournament appearance after Doha in 2007. He played in at least 30 tournaments every year from 2003-2007.

After their match at Amelia Island in 1999 which she lost 6-0 6-2 and clearly gave up, Schnyder said that she didn't even try because she couldn't stand Kournikova.

Then later that year after their match at RG, with Kournikova again winning this time in 3 sets, Schnyder said `I hate playing her and I don’t play if I’m on the court with her. It’s her and everything around her' and 'I don't like playing against her, I can't stand her. Winning one set was enough'.

“Bwayla is a stupid man and a hopeless player. He has a huge nose and is cross-eyed. Girls hate him. He beat me because my jockstrap was too tight and because when he serves he farts, and that made me lose my concentration, for which I am famous throughout Zambia.”

This was the response to Zambian tennis Lighton Ndefwayl’s loss to Musumba Bwayla during a 1992 match.

Excuse: I Did Not Take Cocaine. I Kissed a Girl Who Did and That’s Why the Test Was Positive

While this one should come from the "There is no way that this is true” bin, he actually was acquitted of charges and was reinstated after the clarification. This does not take away from the fact that this is one of the most insane alibis ever concocted.

To my memory, not to diminish prime Fed, just seemed he must not have cared to be routed by a random guy like Volandri 2-6, 4-6 (career high rank 25 & only made one respectable slam run), especially in '07. He later admitted (or it became apparent) at the time he was splitting up with his then coach Tony Roche at the time, still peak Fed usually made every final if he cared about the tournament

For some Fed was not making Rome deep runs between his prime of 2004 and 2012, I think one final only in 2006( granted that was great performance by him)

Hmm, on the 1st match point it was light enough for Federer to hit his best backhand service return of the entire match but mysteriously 2 minutes later it was as "dark as hell" ... Bud, this doesn't happen on planet earth.
So you're saying that it's impossible to hit a single good shot at a given light level, rather than that the light means you don't always see the shot coming perfectly? Do you even play tennis?

Fillipo played out of his mind on that day and the crowd really carried him. Foto Italico rocked. I was luckily in town actually and saw it happen there.

It was the same light for both players. I didn't notice Nadal wearing a miner's lamp.

Yes because they have the exact same play style and use the exact same equipment, so the scenario was completely even.

Well I noticed on the deciding point, there was enough light for Rafa to make his groundstroke so no excuse for Roger dumping his in the net.
I am amazed the umpire and audience could work out who won the last point if it was "dark as hell" ....
