Who is the worst slam finalist of all time? Obviously getting to a slam final is a massive achievement but there have been some really mediocre players who have made it to slam finals throughout the years.

P.S. try and be unbiased, I know it’s easy for the Fed fans to say Anderson and the Rafa fans to say Baghdatis but try and be somewhat objective.

Martin Verkerk is the worst slam finalist of all time, by some distance.

other stinkers include Chris Lewis, Mal Washington, Arnaud Clement, Rainer Schuttler and Maurice Puerta. All of whom are worse players than Kevin Anderson

If I’m going to be biased I’d say it’s Anderson.

If I’m gonna be objective it’s still Anderson

Federer won only four games in one of the Slam finals so is he the worst finalist of all time in a way?

    Just kidding, don't shoot.

59 matches won on ATP, 6 of them occuring at roland garros 2003. that's 10% of his total wins!

Nice try, but being objective is beyond the majority of posters here :p

Some still say Gonzalez was a atrocious finalist, without even taking the time to watch the tennis he was playing at that Australian Open.

From the point of view of games won I would say:

    Men:

1974 US Open, Ken Rosewall. He managed only 2 games against Jimmy Connors. I think that's the lowest number of games won by any male Slam finalist in the Open Era.

    Women:

1988 French Open, Natalia Zvereva. She is the only one in the Open Era to suffer the ultimate humiliation of a double bagel when she lost to Steffi Graf.

Beat Moya and Coria on the way to the final, guy was on fire. A much better run than many other finalists.

That is true, but i thought this thread was discussing the worst players to reach a final, as opposed to what their form during those particular two weeks was like.

in that case Anderson is very near the bottom, since he didn't produce any upsets or play above his normal level to reach the final.

Verkerk. Had a hot run up until the final, then showed his true colors by not being able to even sustain a rally with Ferrero.

Are we looking at overall career, or the run on it's own. Cause that run itself was quite sick apart from a really disappointing final.

So depending on the way you look at it,

It's either Kevin Anderson or a dutchman.

Something to be proud of I guess.

No, not really. Baghdatis beat world no. 3 and no. 5 and at least pushed Federer in the first two sets, his AO run was actually pretty amazing. Kevin was just lucky that the draw collapsed.

On hard courts Ferrero is similar to Pablo Carreño.

And we all know what happened to Carreño against Anderson:

This got to be a joke. Ferrero was worse on HC than he was on clay, but he was at his absolute peak that season and is a Madrid M1000 champion (when it was played on indoor HC, he won it that very same season) as well as a Masters Cup finalist (epic 2002 final vs Hewitt). That USO 2003 he beat Hewitt and Agassi, then current AO champion, on his way to the final, too.

He'd have had a much better career if not for injuries.

Yes, yes really. Baghdatis is far worse than Anderson. Anderson is on a similar league to Philippoussis, not Baghdatis. Baghdatis is like Gasquet.

Good point! I forgot about his other French Open final. :(

But even with a 1-2 record in slam finals, how could he possibly be in this conversation when you have guys like Rios, Coria, Lewis, Pioline, Tsonga, Baghdatis, and Berdych that were all in a grand slam final but didn't get the slam?

At least provide some argumentation to support your claims. For example, why is Anderson on a similar league to Philippoussis? Mark played in two major finals and has reached three QFs, won a masters and played in another final and won 11 titles in his career. Anderson has one QF and that final against Nadal, never reached a masters final and won 4 titles, the same number as Baghdatis actually, who's resume at majors is a bit better than Kevin's - a final, a SF and a QF.

Anderson defeated Andy Murray at the US Open 2015. I don't see Ferrero beating Murray at the US Open. Ferrero couldn't even beat Roddick, who is a far less complete player than Murray.

    1. The answer to any question is 'anyone but zverev'
    2. Rule 1. doesn't apply if the question is a negative one. Instead, rule 3 applies
    3. The answer to negative questions is 'zverev and nobody else'

    Quid Erat Demonstrandum.
