For historical reference the YE #2 is usually a Slam champion, and when he's not has gone deep several times and won multiple Masters titles. Like McEnroe in 85 or Rios in 98.

My vote was for Chang. It was a very weak year and he capitalized with two Finals runs but was a 1st and 3rd round exit at the other two Slams, only won 1 Masters and got booted in RR at the WTF. Extremely mediocre outside of having a 2nd Slam Final and both Finals were pretty damn pedestrian, mustering only 1 set at AO.

What about '99 Kafelnikov? Won a weak slam where almost all the top seeds lost early and had over 30 losses. I think the guys you listed would have won that slam, and they also did better throughout the year than him.

What a dogcrap era of tennis. Djokovic feasting on granddads and bums.

Djokovic needed a limping Nadal and pigeon Sissy to win another French. Berrettini in a Wimbledon final. Bahaha oh my lord.

Has Medvedev hit a winner his entire life? He can barely beat Fognini on a HC.

Oh my god tennis is done. It's DONE! Entire ATP should get on their bikes and go home!
Medvedev handed Rafa a L on his way to YEC. The thing Rafa can never win.. and he has a masters, a F and a SF on hard court slams. He is heavy favorite to win Canadian open this week. If your favorites are not good enough, better skip tennis. Lol

Yes, Medvedev BARELY beat geriatric Nadal in his absolute worst tournament.
He beat pigeons to win his lone masters title (almost lost to Fognini in the SF lmao)
and he might beat mugs like Lajovic Ruud and grandad Monfils en route to a meaningless mickey mouse slam.

Bravo. On your bike mate!
Medvedev was on 20 match win streak. Even with his covid diagnosis, he has kept some distance between him and Tsitsipas who played 20 more matches. Either he or Tsitsipas will be no.2 YE and both are not the worst at all.

How can you make this poll when you very well know that Marcelo Rios is by far the worst Rank 1 and year end rank 2 in history ???

If somebody is rank 1 without winning a slam in his life and can end the year with rank 2 then we are looking at a weak era in tennis going on

He was 3 Masters including Sunshine Double the year he ended YE #2.

How in the hell is that worse than guys who won 1 Masters?

Roddick won a slam, how can he be the worst ?

It is a bit insulting to a great champ who is a slam winner and was challenging Fed on grass in the final the next year.

In 2004 he didn't win a Slam. He made 1 Final and 1 Masters title.

The big difference was Lendl was kicking McEnroe's arse unlike Chang and Roddick who were pigeons for the #1 player! :-D

He won a slam in ending of 03 which is like 14-15 months before year end ranking of 2004.
Plus he lost in Quarters to Safin at AO 04 who was finalist
He almost had defeated Federer in the wimbledon final before rain bailed out Federer.
At the USO as well he made the Qfs ....

Roddick was a worthy rank 2 based on the wimbledon final alone if we take into account that fact that Tennis was coming out of the transitional phase and was entering the baseline era.

Rios is worse than any of these players...... it is a no competition..... the fact that rios became 1 in 98 shows that late 90s was a weak era.... 98 onwards, even carlos moya became 1 ?

2014 Federer
2015 Murray
2014 Fed was just less than 1000 points away from overtaking djoker and you call it worst.
He was the leading the tour wins that that year 73-12. Won 5 titles including 2 masters. Lost 4 Finals including a slam.

I think you've only proven my point. At the end of the 4th year of Djokovic's peak, was the YE#2 his top contemporary Nadal, who actually won a slam that year? Or his top contemporary Wawrinka, who also actually won a slam that year? Or his top contemporary Murray? Or, his lower-level contemporary Cilic, who also won a slam that year? No. The YE#2 was Roger Federer...a previous-generation/non-contemporary who didn't win a slam, only made one slam final, and still was nearly the YE#1.

Everything about 2014 was weak. The YE#1 doesn't have much to write home about regarding that season, so what does that say about the YE#2, lol.

YE ranking is not decided by one slam win...It is the result of your entire performance in elite competition throughout that year. Wawrinka after winning maiden slam lost before QFs in all the slams.

Nadal except for his clay success was nothing else. Federer reached a Slam Final 2 SFs,won 2 masters and made 2 more Finals and made it to WTF finals.

He was the deserved no 2 that year.

This forum, lol. Always marginalizing how insane what he did on clay was and putting it to the side like cold fries :-D

This entire thread was to disqualify Novak's era.

Guess what Danill just won his masters this year already. In past 12 months he has 2 masters, WTF (beating world no.3,2,1) and slam final. Looking much better than Roddick 2004 lol.
