Would prime Federer have beaten Cilic at US Open 2014?

Cilic was playing unbelievable tennis at US Open 2014. Crushed Federer in straight sets. Would prime Federer have defeated Cilic in that slam?

I think no. Cilic is a bit like Del Potro - tall, big guy, hard hitter, big server. And we all know what happened in the US Open 2009 final. I think prime Federer takes it to 5, but ultimately loses. What are your thoughts?

If Roger could get his hands on the right ''herbs'' that turn you into a God for 2 weeks then he might have a chance to win.

Cilic is a weak era champ..

Guys like Murray/Hewitt/Roddick would eat him up, let alone prime Fed.

I was a lurker for 6 years before I signed up last year.
I don't recall seeing this many hypothetical threads.

Looks like people are just bored with the reality they're resorting to hypothetical matches.
There are 3 tournaments on right now, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Lol.

You just made this post so people would say bad things abouth Cilic.
What do you have against Cilic anyway .
Wrongly accused of doping he came back and won a slam.
Doesnt get much better then that .

I predicted prime Federer would lose to Cilic at USO14. So no, I don't have anything against Cilic.

I can't be responsible for the opinions of others, however.

Of course you are responsible for things you provoked.

I don't think prime Federer would be beating anybody's prime version. He is seriously overrated player of all times, thats the "O" in his gOat == greatest overrated player of all time :D

Come on, Ferrer must have been in his prime once in those 16 matches!

No, Federer was just fortunate that Ferrer never showed up in one of those 17 finals. Prime Ferrer would have toyed Fed-E-R-R-O-R and that is why there is all the anticipation that their 17th meeting would in the finals of Wimbledon 2017. The date would be 17th and the month 7th. Then you would see how gOat Fed-E-R-R-O-R would have been demolished :p

Yes, I am pretty sure they will both reach the final of Wimbledon 2017.

If not for the Monfils 5 setter the previous match, Fed would have managed to find a way to break the Cilic juggernaut. Cilic was too hot that week but something that Fed would have had an answer on a normal day.

Three fairly routine sets. Something like 4,4 and 4, with early breaks is my guess. But then again, Cilic was really something in that match, so who knows.

I think so too...he did solve him in Toronto when Cilic was zoning.

Cilic played the tennis of his life and I think nobody have a chance against that kind of Cilic.... Played like never before and after...

Gonzo and Baghdatis played the tennis of their lives too. Didn't work against prime Federer. Prime Federer would beat that Cilic. Of that I have no doubt whatsoever. I guess you could make the argument that he lost to Safin and Delpo, but I think both of those guys are better players than Cilic.

It was pure zoning. The 2nd week was.
It was like 1st US Open win of Safin.

Cilic played out of his mind and his serving was exceptional - even those that were returned were difficult to return - match lasted about 1:45

Funny thing is he, almost lost to Simon in r16, but played 3 matches Q/SM/F like a man possessed :) I remember watching and just could not believe it....

That seems to happen in zoning episodes:

1990 US Open, Sampras zoning after beating Ivan Lendle in 5 sets.
2000 US Open, Safin zoning after beating Sabastian Grojean in 5 sets.

5 set win at slams.

That always bring up greatness.
Maybe that's what Nadal needs right now...

federer at the tail end of his prime lost to delpo and it still took a major loss of focus and intensity midway through the second set for it to happen....he was thoroughly in control of that match. Safin beat Fed by the skin of his teeth and peak Safin >> peak Cilic.

I agree. My point is that this is the only possible argument that can really be made. None of the "Cilic never played better, nobody beats him" stuff really flies. Generally, Federer was very adept at cooling down in form opponents in his prime though so he would beat Cilic in 4 or less.

Yeah I remember something like Gonzo making only 3 unforced errors against Haas in the 2007 AO SF. Just 3 unforced errors!!!

Guys like Federer,Nadal,Djokovic and Murray don't even play this well in the first round of a slam, let alone in a GS SF.

Gonzo's performance was unreal, but I'm pretty sure he made a few more than 3 UEs. Some of his errors which were counted as forced errors were quite lenient, and I remember the commentator having the same opinion too. But yeah, his official number of UEs was 3. There have been a few matches where I thought the same too...

I mean let that sink in for a moment: just 3 unforced errors in a best of 5 sets match in a GS SF.

Just unreal.
