Would these two be ntrp 3.0? (6 min trimmed video)

I would say blue guy higher 3.0 than the white shirt guy. White shirt I would put at barely 3.0 right now.

I still maintain they're both 2.5s. The guy in blue has potential to make it to 3.0 with some training. Guy in white needs a lot of lessons in fundamentals (don't we all?).

I think they can be in 3.0 no problem. They can at least move and in 3.0 they will get beat quite a bit, but hopefully will learn quickly from the higher level competition. If they play 3rd line doubles or 2nd line singles occasionally it should be ok. In that level they might be competitive depending on who they play against. Honestly I don't think there is THAT much separating a low 3.0 vs a 2.5. You might as well join 3.0.

Guy in white needs to set up 3-4 lessons with a good pro and commit to switching to a 2h backhand. His bh has so many issues... it would be better to just switch now. His bad habits are ingrained and would be very difficult to change.

If he switched to 2hbh he would learn to position better, he'd naturally (probably) have topspin, he wouldn't be dumping easy shots into the net, he'd gain some consistency.

And with a little practice and good coaching, there might actually be a time where he intentionally hits a solid 2hbh crosscourt or down the line for a clean winner... and he would feel very positive about the effort he put into learning the shot and doing it well. For him, that would be a shot he would smile and think about and replay in his head for days later.

For his level, addressing the weakest stroke in his game (bh) and improving it, would easily add .5 to 1 full point to his rating AND allow him to continue to grow and improve.

Fix the bh, then move on to the next weak stroke. Fix that, move on to the next.

The guy in white makes me not want to tell people I play tennis. I don't want people to envision that's what tennis looks.

Hell, dude is doing ALL sports injustice.

Guy in the white just needs to fix his backhand. He can't be a 3.0 because anyone could just hit to his backhand and get free points.

I do think his sloppy spastic attitude would drive any coach nuts but he can move some and could quickly go up in level to maybe 3.5 or so...

He can't be a 3.0 because he stops and poses for like 5 seconds before and after hitting a shot.

Hmmm... good point, after watching it again the white dude will get beat pretty consistently in 3.0. Even blue guy would lose a lot but maybe not as bad. I don't see either taking a whole set from someone.

Ahh but he does hit some nice forehands now and then. Its his slice stuff that's just awful..

This must be the type of thing you were referring to in that "Jersy Janowicz racquet" thread above.

It looks like a 1920's era "Keystone Cops Play Tennis" or something.

Hmm, on further review this might well be worse than 3.0...

But actually I don't think these players should be worried about their rating, and they may want to take a break from match play and focus on rallying, hitting on the wall, and drop-feeding if they want to improve.

Lessons would be great if that's an option, but at this point I think watching video of correct form, shadow-swinging it, and trying adopt it on the court (or against the wall) would be a big step in the right direction.

Guy in white may want to start by retiring his FH slice from the baseline. Shots like the returns at 3:50 and 4:20 will never make sense.

Thanks for all the comments!

In Singapore, we do not have ntrp leagues. Everybody rates themselves and the tendency is to err on the high side. Sometimes, way too high... :)

Backhands start at 0:30. White shirt's backhand would fit in fine here I think.

Yes Avles, I think this is about right. Despite the four of them fighting hard for the points, it is nice to see them remaining friendly and cordial to one another.

Just that? None of it made any sense.

- Serving from the deuce court alley but doesn't go wide
- Pause and pose before hitting a shot
- Pause and pose after hitting a shot
- Standing in the middle of no-man's-land

The guys in the park (santa cruz) are stronger player then these kids. They aren't making it up as they go along like the kid in white is..

The kid in white has more talent and is more athletic but doesn't know what the heck he is doing.. With abit of work he could be above 3.5 - very very quickly. But he still needs to learn how to hit all the shots - not just the forehand.

I agree with you guys. If they are 3.0 they would be the bottom of the group. I could not watch the whole thing but it seems like they like to play in the middle of the court but not for net play. Any medium lob or passing shot can burn him.
