What a relief. Both of my GS final wins before this were quite one sided. Berdych at Wimbledon 2010 and Federer at US Open 2009. The other was a straights sets loss to Rafa in France. I hear there are calls to have serve and volley banned. I will not listen to those calls. How about banning top spin? I see you went awfully quiet there. No more lame ideas, ok? Thank you.

When I lost the fourth set after being up a break I thought I was doomed. Was starting to get lazy with my serves. Like Petch says, crazy powerful serves into the opponent hitting zone is not the best idea. It does become a habit. You can see the pressure I was under with the 9 doubles. Average second serve speed lower than the first. The ultimate sign of respect for Nadal. Finally get a gs win after being 0-3 (France, Australia 2)

I had a hard time in Stockholm, losing to Granollers in a close TB, after breaking him from 5-3 30-30.
The week in Beijing is pretty quiet so far, had a big of trouble with Monaco who was defending excellently and generally doing everything better than me, but I streamrolled the rest of the draw. Up into the finals against Almagro.

Novak is getting me back for those Hell's Kitchen comments. True to real life and kicking ass in 2011. Had 1 break point in the last match. Suppose that is better than the 0 points in the Aussie final.

More tales from the unexplainable. Djokovic won Aussie and France but lost early at Wimbledon. Federer, Nadal and Murray went out pretty early as well. Time for Pete to feast.

The Wimbledon final was once again Sampras vs Berdych! He pushed me all the way this time.

Roger serves double fault to give me the Cinci title. Was on a run of 4 final defeats to Roger so this was big. Tight match. Love these matches. I'm usually hitting as many errors in one set against the defenders. We just let each other play and it is beautiful music.

Whole load of results to come in.

2013 season ended up being a decent one - ended the year No. 2 though thanks to an absolute flurry of titles by a certain Spaniard. We met 3 times in the year and although I prevailed on every occasion they were good quality matches.

Davis Cup QF vs. Spain:

I was pitted against Nadal in the first rubber on clay. Played a solid match overall though the first couple of sets saw us exchange quite a few breaks of serve. Was 0-2, then 2-4 down in the first set, somehow won it 7-5. Was also 0-2 down in set 2, then 3 consecutive breaks of serve followed before I eventually took control. 3rd set was solid on serve from both of us until I eventually broke in the 9th game, then served out the match by putting away a FH winner

Wimbledon 2013 SF:

Very see-saw encounter. Got broken in my opening service game and then dropped serve again to get breadsticked in around 32 mins (only my second ever 1-6 set on grass). Not overly comfortable on the grass, but managed to open up a 3-0 lead in the 2nd set and held on to take it 6-3. I looked like the better player at the start of the 3rd set but suddenly at 3-4 he played an insane return game to break and serve out the set. Every point he won was a clean winner. Went up a break in the 4th but got pegged back again, but then finally forced some errors from him to serve out and take us the distance. Early disaster as I found myself trailing 1-3 in the 5th set but like Fedr in Australia I summoned my last reserves, kept plugging away and finally turned the match around, breaking serve for 6-5. Then finished it off with an ace down the T (233 km/h)

2013 WTF Final:

Rafa hadn't lost a set or lost his serve the whole tournament. Looked like that was going to continue as he stormed out to a comfortable lead with deep groundstrokes - I wasn't returning well enough and was playing very short on a relatively fast surface. Down a set and a break 2-6, 1-2, I eventually got my teeth into the match, used some S&V and attacked his BH with my I/O FH from the opposite corner to open up the court. Completed a 4-set comeback, sealed with an ace again.

2014 Australian Open Final:

Don't think anyone quite expected this thrashing. Unreal performance from me at the age of 28. Won pretty much all the longer rallies and he had 0 success with the drop shot on this surface. Collected AO Title No. 9 and continued my absolute dominance on the surface. 21-7 lifetime H2H (now 9-2 in Slams) - all about exploiting the weakness as long as you have the stamina to keep plugging away :p

It was satisfying, I'll admit.

Still - not a great season by any means. Lost early in IW, Miami and Madrid. Won MC and Rome and then lost in the RG SF. Could have lost in R3 after nearly mugging it up against a semi-retired Roddick. Had to come back from 2 sets down to win 6-7, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Was down 2-4 in the 3rd set, and also down 0-3 in the fifth.

Your assumption is correct

On TE, most people find Nadal/Federer/Ferrer/Davy particularly tough, so perhaps it's be more realistic on that front compared to TS4 - all about match-ups.

No bakery products in the 1st set? :(

Those 40 errors and 0/5 conversion are quite nice to see. :)
I wanted to coast that first set and concentrate on my serve :D

"The d1ck" had 4 BPs in my opening service game - I saved them all, then came back from 0-40 down in his service game to break him, then saved 1 more BP in my own game to hold for 3-0. He played out of his mind but got burned at the net as usual. Broke his spirit.

A-Rod can't lace the Berd's boots on Tennis Elbow. Glad you put Davy as a tough opponent. My struggles are well documented here. :p

Sampras is having the worst year ever. Out early at most places. Wimbledon defence ended with a straight-set thrashing against Muzz, he got me in Australia as well. I've just played myself out more than anything since I started back in December. Feels like yesterday when I didn't know how to hit a winner.

Reached the point of feeling like a chore to load it up now. No motivation. Still, I will love the game once I feel like playing again. Absence making the heart grow fonder. Once the clay masters starts etc. I'm sure I'll watch a match and it will make me want to play again.

''Sampras is burned out at 21''

''Nah, he is just afraid of Djokovic 100s all over the place in 2012. Mac has his number, too.''

''What?''

Quite heartbreaking to try and play against that. I'll complain, complain and complain again. Wish they could limit the players. Preaching to the choir at this point. Hallelujah.

Absence did make the heart grow fonder. Be playing a tournament over a couple of days and not rushing. No more tiebreak matches. Using Pete once more, only back in his normal time. I did feel it again.

Decided to start on incredible 1 and now that I want to play, this level doesn't seem so bad. Beat (world number 2) Gilbert 7-5 7-5 in r3 in Australia and then Goran in r16. Really impressive performance against Goran. So tight. Anticipation was there and once it registers that he is left handed, I used it to my advantage. He got the odd powerbomb back at me, but I felt good.

Next match will be the first clash of the titans of this career. Qf Australia against Andre Agassi. Excite.

Most of the big guns of this era are still in the tournament. Lendl, Becker and Edberg. Wilander is there too. Feels a lot different than the Aussie Open I won in that short Edberg career.

What a nasty draw for me in Doha, harder than any Slam last year :D

GOATing Cilic, who has massive game(FH,BH,serve, even speed and stamina)
Managed to beat him 6-3, the purest form of masterclass from my player.
22W to 8 UE and 34 pts won to 21 conceded.
Big hitter Querray, somehow an easy match and Tipsarevic, who played unusually well given his poor stats and had me on ropes at one point.

Klizan was a beast too, his FH and BH are both nearly perfect 100 and he has 97 speed, but somehow he got tired and had that one poor service game in the middle of the set so beat him 6-4.
I didn't play my very best, but I played very smart.

Now up against Murray in the finals, gonna switch to BO3.

What a beauty of a match against Gasquet. I am in poor form as of recent, after having lost the Doha final 6-4 6-4 to Murray and a few less than brilliant matches in AO so far, but this was a great comeback after Gasquet served for the match

And I had to play this well to win the 3rd set and it was still close:

Lost that match to Agassi in 4 sets.

This was a big win because I lost to Jaite 1-6 at Indian Wells. Broke him straight away in the rematch and did well. He is like a lesser version of Ferrer in this era. Something like that.

That nice moment when you scroll up and see it is Edberg in the final and not Chang.

Enjoying this version of the career so far.

Beat several big guns at Monte Carlo. Agassi, Becker and Berger. I mention Berger because he beat me at Miami. Good tournament and now getting a final I am motivated for. Was dreading looking up at the page and then seeing Chang.

Master class in set 1. Check out Edberg's net stats.

He responded like a number 1 should and had me a break down in set 3. Stats went out the window. I thought it would be same old story again, even when it got to tiebreak, but no, I finally had the chance to unload a thunder pass at 5-5 and made no mistake with the match point. Yay. Good to be back.

Stefan and I shall meet again in the final of the French Open. Yay. Another one of those scared to scroll up the page moments. It was either him or Muster. Beat Goran 7-6 6-7 7-5 in the semi. So happy I managed to break him because I felt my play deserved it. He didn't have a break point in the match.

I won the French in straights. I seem to have Edberg's number in this career. Our next match will be Cinci qf and he will be at incredible 4! That is absolutely incredible. And Sampras rocks at Cinci. Definitely my favourite court. Should be a good match.

I lost at Wimbledon to Chesnokov in r16. Those bloody Russians! boooo. The good thing was that he went on to win the tournament. Just didn't take my chances in that match. And he is a defender.

Unlike real life, Andre Agassi has the last laugh. Pete had 3 match points in the tiebreak, including 2 on his serve, but I bottled it. It suddenly hit me that Andre going crosscourt with his forehand most of the time and I was able to turn the match around in set 3, I felt in control of everything. He is lucky US Open has tiebreak in the final set. :p

Not one of them soul-destroying losses or anything.

Those times when you regret not going down the t. Should have just hammered one of them and hope for a short return then finish him. Not like I was struggling for aces, although he wasn't either. It was a frustrating loss. Can't keep giving him 2-0 leads.

All the lessons learned here have helped me be able to play as high as incredible 5 against Edberg. Becker finally got me on Incredible 4. I prefer playing back in this era because the stats are relatively good. Haven't really come across any bloated machines yet, although defenders and counters will always give me a game.

Agassi is on incredible 2.

Haven't played any whole season in a long time. Just randomly picking my player and my opponent, even creating some, both on ATP and WTA. Something I only started noticing recently is that my opponents can't hit a first serve to save their life, even at Incredible 7, even with crazy serve stats. Constantly below 50% 1st serves in. Obviously I love winning but having a good opportunity to break every time makes it a bit unrealistic, at least when playing with male players.

Into my twilight years on tour. It's 2015 - I dropped to world no. 4 at the end of 2014 after winning only the AO and a couple of Masters titles that year. Still ok. Levelled up to Inc. 7 and had some wonderful matches.

Gotta feel sorry for Berdy though :p We've played 9 times in the span of 15 months, including meeting at Wimbledon 14, US Open 14 and the 2015 AO as well as a Davis Cup tie. Still the poor Czech hasn't got the job done against me since Wimbledon 2007. I don't forgive and forget easily.

Wimbledon - 2 set lead. He served for the match at 5-3 in the fifth, still couldn't close it out lol. But a very testing match - it took a lot of work to make an impact on his serve.

US Open '14 - this was quick and one-sided. Only lost 4 games as the Bending was in full swing - kept getting wrong-footed on the hard courts.

AO 2015 - took the first couple of sets comfortably 6-1, 6-2. Then choked away a TB before righting the ship and winning in 4 in the semis. Went on to win La Decima in a 4 set final.

Davis Cup: the choke to end all chokes?

Was getting pounded in the early stages. Actually went down 1-6, 4-6, 0-2 quite quickly. We had a healthy exchange of breaks in the 3rd set. Then Big Berd served for the match twice before I broke back. At 5-5 in the breaker, I played a stinging BH passing shot from 10 feet behind the baseline, then forced the error to snatch the set and the momentum. That was all she wrote.

Awk, Tomas. I thought that Wimbledon defeat would be as bad as it got. Then I continued to read. God love him. Epic match and stats for the Wimbledon match.

At least he always has that French Open triumph in my alternative universe.

Small update on Sampras.

Having a terrible 1991 and still in love with the game. Breaks help. Anyway, Courier gave me a rude awakening in Australia 111. Yep. Metaphorically speaking, it was murder on the court, Jack, Dude.

That was round 3. Didn't do much at Indian Wells or Miami. Won 1 match. Out early in 2/3 clay masters (only played 2 :p ) and lost to Falla in France. round 3. Yeah, my French Open reign ends in round 3 to somebody I beat the year before 6-1. My fault here. I didn't think it was worth putting it longer than 1 set.

But, Wimbledon could be the salvation. Into the Wimbledon final. Beat Korda 7-5 2-6 10-8. Weird to have 3 set matches that don't have a tie-break in the third. I was glad for it because he could not steal and by this point, I was getting through serve games in seconds. woohoo Ivanisevic was handled in the quarter-final.

The final is against Courier! Yes. My first rematch since that hammering in Australia. Will not be playing incredible 4 this time. lol 3 will definitely be challenging enough. He improved a lot because I beat him twice pretty easily in the first year.

Not quite a triple bagel.

Into my second consecutive gs final after beating the defender duo of Chang and Lendl in the r16 and qf. Lendl got tired and broke down, was basically just hitting softish balls down the middle from the fourth onwards. Beautiful scenes, I have to say. No idea how I managed to beat Chang. Winning no points on his serve and being run ragged. My serve stayed with me in the end.

Revenge was sweet in the semi. Making up for the final defeat last year. Ace count got a little (a lot!) gamey in this match. Crazy. I was never complaining when mine went in. :p

Real sweet Aussie Open draw. Had to play Mansdorf in the 2nd round. He was the guy I beat to win Aussie with Edberg. Edberg is the king of Australia. Won it both years and now I get my chance against him in the quarter-final. Lead him 4-1 overall and didn't get him once in 1991.

Good thoughts were on my mind in another epic against Edberg. The only time I was upset was at end of set 3 because I fought so hard to get first mini-break of the tiebreak, making these low down volleys and rising to the occasion. Then, in my usual fashion, I immediately lose next 2 points. Then he serves an ace to win the set and rub it in. Scenes.

Went to another tiebreak in set 4. Made sure I had insurance this time and won the first 4 points. Set 5, Edberg crumbled. I have 3 break points in the first game of set 5 after having none in the first 4 sets. Once I got him there was no way he was going to break me again.

There really is no greater thrill than watching Agassi come to the net. You just know right then that you have a real chance of getting the point. Big win, my adjustments seem to be working, reduced forehand and backhand, stretching the limits a bit by giving him 85 speed. All his special stats are crap. Feel the extra bit of speed is helping. I don't know. It was Agassi on incredible 2 once again because we had a match here before and he won easily.

It was another Sampras robbery in terms of points won. So delicious.

And guess who the final opponent is?

I just love how video games can have the power of making things right. I might lose. I doubt it with the form here, though. But anyway, thank you tennis elbow gods for setting up this final.

Kind of had to be considering Mark Woodforde was his semi opponent and Mal Washington was qf. :D

And it ended up being worth waiting for. Not just the win, but the final was great fun. None of this struggling to win any points on the opponent serve carry on. Can say the speed is definitely helping because the first 3 sets I was using inside out more than ever. On top spin, you have the button to change to inside but it feels a lot more fluid on tennis elbow when you are positioning yourself. Got some ridiculous winners and misses. haha.

Boris is disappointed but vows to smack Sampras next time on Incredible 4. He felt Pete just had more control of his spirit (?) this time. ''His forehand came from Krypton.'' Boris did make a healthy profit from the match (in my tennis elbow universe gambling is legal.) He bet on himself to get more aces. :p Boo. It was weird, I thought the game was up to its antics and jumping the shark. First 4 sets his serve was not doing much. At the start of 5, he had 5 aces in 3 games. Of course, the ace would usually get him out of a 30-30 or similar. Yeah, clutch play.

No Krypton stuff to talk about this time.

Followed up Australia with better results than last year. Not winning anything but getting further. I would have to put every match to best of 3/5 to get the best results. I don't have time for that. More fun this way.

Did I ever regret setting it to 3 against Chang in the French Open semi. Yep, finally playing against the nightmare on clay. Lost in the 3rd 19-17 . It was comical. Long past the point of me winning more than one point on his serve. Any time I did get a point, he was at 40-0. I was starting to have flashes of 45-45 or something like that. No underarm serving here. He was fresh as a daisy and I wanted out of there. :p

All that took me up to number 2 and then I ran into Muster at Wimbledon in r16. Title defense ended there and loads of points dropped. Back down to number 6.

Doing well in Rogers Cup Toronto. The final match against Agassi.

Still haven't been number 1 in this career.

There was some Kryptonian magic in the final.

Boris Becker was commentating for Eurosport on the final.

What more can be said? We saw some amazing things out there today. Pete came from a set and a break down, and then he came back from a mini-break down in the final set. It was extraordinary. It's like I keep saying, Pete Sampras has a new kind of power. None of us are safe.

Boris might be going a little over the top after too much complimentary wine. Was a great match. One of those times that I was getting into several of his serving games. I really didn't want it to go to a tiebreak. The tiebreak was mad. At 7-6, Agassi saves the match point with a 33 shot rally. lol He had to retrieve a smash and I was just killing the ball every time. Timing had to be perfect and each time it was. After that amazing point, he hits his first double of the match and then I follow it with an ace to finish. You know I need a song for the second masters title of my career.
