wrap lead tape over handle/stock grip

Lawn Tennis

I added 10 grams of lead tape to my head liquid metal radicals (11.7oz now). I think many take the stock grip off and put it under that. I just wrapped 10 grams over the stock grip and then use two tourna grips (one "permanent"). Any pros cons to this? Hit with it and felt slightly bulky but the extra weight and sturdiness seems like a nice tradeoff.

It might take a bit off the grip if you decide to remove it in the future and it would require changing it if you change your grips (which most people don't do because of overgrips). I prefer to put it inside the handle if possible so that the overall gripsize stays the same.

I would say If it's anything long term, hide it as deep as possible. I have ~9g on the handle directly, secured with packing tape.
No cons as long as you like the modification.

Tourna Grips are not known to be the most durable overgrips. They fall apart.

And, with a little practice, removing the original factory grip and putting it back on is much easier than you think.

This is my favorite way to add weight in the handle while improving feel:

Pour the micro beads in, seal with some cotton balls and in HEAD rackets I've tried you get exactly 10 grams when both handle chambers are fully packed.

To reverse simply suck them out with a vacuum.

when adding lead tape to the handle, it's recommended to do it on the bare handle so that means removing the stock grip and buying a new one to replace it to cover the lead tape. just my 2 cents. i wouldn't put it on just the stock grip.

If you put it on the stock grip with only tournagrip over it, the lead will leach through the tournagrip when you sweat and you could be at risk of lead poisoning. I would definitely not recommend this.

this too. i wouldn't want the lead poking through my overgrip at any point. i would totally lose focus on actually playing the match and instead i would be thinking about the lead tape. just go the extra mile and put it on the bare handle, buy the replacement grip for a few extra bucks.

With a little care, you can unwrap your grip, put the lead on and rewrap. I now use tungsten under my grips. It weight more so you can use less. Obviously bigger amounts of weigh have to go inside the handle.

I love reading all the comments... I always learn something :). Love the Micro beads idea... was familiar with all the others... great stuff.

TW also now sells Tungsten Putty, which you can pack into the handle or under the butt cap... I find tungsten tape to be a bit thicker so have not used it on the grip (just on the hoop)...but I suppose if I went down a grip size maybe it would be fine...maybe there would be some vibration absorption benefits too..ala Sorbathane on Head Radical Tours (MIA - Bumblebees, Zebras and Candycanes)...

Take off the replacement grip, apply lead, put something over the lead (thin layer of electrical tape), rewrap replacement grip, put on overgrip. 10 minutes total. What's the problem ?

Quick tip: When removing your stock grip, make sure the adhesive stays on the grip so you can use it again.

Also, placing the lead on the bare handle will give it a feel as being part of the racquet. I used to do it your way for a little while, but I could sense that I was holding more than one massive object. And it did feel more bulky.

I've added lead on top of the regular grip. I've left all the backing on except for a little bit right at the end of each lead strip so it will stick to the grip. This way you can pull the prices off without ruining your grip.

I've done this a lot on demos and have left some on for over 6 months on my Blades with no problems.
