Wrist/GE

I've demoed several PK racquets including the Q5's. I just didn't take to them. I know it's hard to change racquets so maybe if I bought one I'd grow to like it (and I could always use another racquet!) but for just a week at a time didn't work for me.

That said, I find it difficult to take to any racquet that's not a Prince. Lord knows I try. There's just something about them that I can't find in other racquets.

I had experience with Destiny FCS and KI 10. Both have head which is identical to Pure Drive. At least identical to Pure Drives up to couple of last updates. Including drilling positioning for grommets. First PD's released had the same throat as Destiny as they were made from Destiny mold directly. Not just that, it seems Pro Kennex even made first PD line for Babolat, perhaps a second one as well.

I tell all this to understand this is one really good design. I can see it. However it's still a design for a certain style of play. It's not for every player, regardless of how good it is.

The other important thing: PK Destiny FCS and KI 10 specs are not quite made 'ready to play'. In stock form those racs can use some added swing weight and twist weight, which turns them into monsters. It's just that I see current PK's as platforms more than ready to go racs.

I suspect Q5's and other PK 5's are similar. That is, they probably need to be customized to show their best.

Anyway, I played with Prince for a long time, and I think KI 10 is the one to go to for Prince players, as transition to it was natural for me. If you can demo it I recommend it. It has more open pattern in the upper hoop than Q5, but drilling positioning melts with head shape and design naturally for a smooth transition from string bed centre to the upper hoop. Some Prince designs are similar in this respect.

alas, im convinced every injury ive had from tennis or other sports is due to overuse. if it isnt the elbow its the shoulders, knees, or back. equipment helps some, but it doesnt keep you from overusing. i dont think theres a simple solution to the problem. you either live with the pain or you cut back and rest.

There's truth to that. When those doctors say rest I tend to ignore them but there's no denying it works. For a few weeks now I've went from 5/6 days a week to just Fri/Sat and each Thursday the wrist/elbow are feeling good. Then Friday...

The problem is I'm running out of tomorrow. Like Istewart said, sucks getting old. Sigh.

I'm about to turn 59, am a high 4.5 player, and have a million miles on my body. I hit just about every day, and lift weights 3 times per week. Also walk 2 miles at lunch during the week as the weather allows. My wrist is the biggest issue.... very achy and arthritic. Am also prone to elbow issues, as the elbow is not great. Has been tennis elbow at times, golfer elbow other times. Four knee surgeries, and a back surgery. Things hurt, but I still play at a high level. I know I am on the clock as to the limited amount of time I can play at a high level, so I am just going to ride it as long as I can. I tape my wrist heavily, and wear a wristband over the tape. I play a 12 plus ounce 95 inch flexible frame with a big grip. I string with a soft poly hybrid main, synthetic cross. My wrist / elbow are very racket / string sensitive, so I play with what I can get by. I've been at the unusual situation for years where everything hurts, but I can still play at a high level. Stinks to get old.

And you don't know how bad it stinks till you get there!

My wrist soreness were always on the days I try to purposely generate "a bit more" spin/rpm, and there by possibly using too much wrist. On regular days, I use a bit more locked wrist forehand, and no issues.

Locked wrist works together with hitting out in front of you a lot. It's a geometry connection.

Depending on how bad my wrist is bothering me, I add more tape to my wrist tape job. With enough tape, you can just about create a cast to lock your wrist. I think I could play pretty respectable tennis at this point with my wrist just about totally locked.

That's an idea worth looking into to. I actually have two overgrips on because I found that the larger grip also helps, but it's even softer with two.
I'm also fighting GE so it's a bit of a balancing act between the two. Still I'll get a leather grip and give it a go and let you know what I find.

Did the leather make it better or worse?

I cut the toes off a sock, put it on my arm with tiger balm when i sleep. The heel on the sock fits the elbow perf.

Haven't got it yet. Closest tennis store is 8 miles away and haven't biked out that way yet. Cat food store is out there too and going to go re-supply next week so will pick up then.

My elbow routine is I put on an arm compression sleeve when I get up and wear it for 30/45 minutes in the morning. I usually play about an hour after that. Then I ice both elbow and wrist for 20 minutes 3 times a day. Haven't done anything over night. Something else to try!

On a bit of a tangent, quite a few years ago, as my club singles champ, I was asked to play mixed doubles with the oldest woman in the club. She was 94. At one point, she was serving and started complaining that her serve was horrible. I raised my hand for time, went up to her and said - quietly but firmly. "Fanny, I don't want to hear crap about your serve! You're 94 years old and out on the tennis court. Just hit the damn ball"! We lost in three sets[emoji4].

Is there only one Wilson Shock Shield grip? The one called Hybrid with silicone backing? I thought there was another version of Shock Shield that had foam backing? I'm looking for the heaviest replacement grip that isn't leather.

There is an extensive grip section with the thickness and weight of just about everything out there.
