Wrist pain with Wilson 6.1

I play with a Wilson 6.1 95 16x19, the 2012 version. I seem to have a lot of pain in my wrist after I play with it.

Amaingly, I have much less when I hit with the Babolat pure strike 18x20. Same string setup.

I don't get how I can have less wrist pain with a Bab. Perhaps the Wilson encourages a more wristy stroke and aggressive play?? I find myself grinding more and attacking less with the Bab.

What is your string setup? You also have to consider that the Pure Strike is much lighter than the 6.1, so it also is much less tiring to play with.

That could be it. The 6.1 is 10 Pts HL whereas the Pure Strike is 5 Pts HL (same swingweight), so the 6.1 might encourage a more wristy shot for you, since it is more maneuverable relatively.

By the way, you grind more with the Pure Strike because it has significantly less power than the 6.1.

If it's in the BACK of the wrist, topside, it could be from too much racket weight and SW.
Babs is lighter in both.

they have the same SW LeeD. Both have a swingweight of 324. Of course, he might have gotten heavier stock 6.1 and a lighter stock Pure Strike, but who knows.

Back of wrist can be takeback related or 1hbh flat or topspin stroke.
In my case, simply switching from a 12.5 oz 340 SW racket to a 11 oz., 320 SW cured my back of the wrist aching problems.

A few hours with the Pure Strike 18 x 20 did so much damage to my arm that I had to take two weeks off. It was strung with garbage string so I can't blame the racket for sure, which felt great, even with the crappy "no extra charge" string.

It just felt like a comfy racket but changed my game some. I play better w the Wilson but don't want to risk longterm injury and stuff.

If a racket or string setup hurts my arm, I stay away. I have poly crosses at 51 in one setup, but I try not to use it too much. Gut in the low to moderate range is always a good choice.

Setup is luxilon 4G main with bab tonic plus cross at 55 lbs.
Well 4G is the stiffest poly TW ever has recorded in their data. BTW, gut mains should feel much less boardy. Next time you string it, try it, and slightly pre-stretch your gut mains (about 10% pre-stretch). String your mains at the same tension but lower your crosses' tension by 3lbs.

But I agree with other posters that no racquet/setup is worth the pain. If it doesn't get any better, step away before it becomes serious.

I had a similar experience with the 2014 six one 95 18x20 demo. I don't know what the hell it was strung at tension-wise, but I struggled to even adjust the strings between points. I play with 4g at 58 on a 12 oz racquet with the same SW as the six one, so I think it was a stiffness issue. If I had to guess, I think the six one must have been strung in the 58 to 60 range... I never have arm issues and that one was making my inner forearm sore. I used to use the 2010 blx six one 95 18x20 with an adrenaline 16/stamina 16 setup at 58 and 61 lbs, so I can handle high tensions just fine, but I think a 4g setup in the high 50s in an 18x20, 12 oz frame is enough to do anyone in.

Swap out the hybrid and see how you do with a semi-snug full bed of multi in the Wilson. Also consider a little tuning if the balance of the 6.1 is a little too head-light. It could be more twitchy for you compared with the Pure Strike - that can make for unconsciously using too active of a wrist to manipulate or "steer" the frame through contact. Just some thoughts to consider.

It seems to be part of the ampifeel system. That means it would be hard to avoid with the Wilson line, even the 2014 6.1 models. Sad cause I love playing with that stick!

radtennisfan, I really liked the 6.1s also and almost bought that exact same 2012 frame until I tried my current racquet the Yonex Tour G 330 and it plays very similar to the 6.1 but with a larger sweet spot. I would highly recommend the G330. The feels is as buttery as the 6.1. Good luck.

I spoke directly with Wilson HQ on this matter since I experienced the same thing with a Pro Staff containing metal weights.

- the metal weights are not part of AmpliFeel

- the metal weights are only used to correct balance and weight as frames come off the production line

- some frames in any given production run might have them, others are foam filled, it depends on whether or not the frames need to be corrected for weight and balance.

- within any given product line you can seek frames filled with foam and without any metal weights...popping of the butt cap does NOT harm the shrink wrap so a retailer can check for you before purchase

Thinking the metal was part of AmpliFeel I had given up on the PS95 only to learn this year that you can buy Pro Staffs with foam inside the handle. We now have two Pro Staffs with foam and they've caused zero pain unlike the first one which contained metal (we dumped that one). I asked for foam-filled frames from a friendly local retailer and managed to find some. They feel great!

My 6.1 team blx has a foam filled handle up to the cap and some strips on the pallet. A steam 99s I have doesn't have the foam all the way to the cap, haven't seen the pallet so not sure on the strips.

I have no problems whatsoever in 4 2012 6.1 95 16X18, bought from all over the place: some from TW, some from internet...

Same with the original BLX 2010 (I think) 6.1 95 16X18.

All strung with full bed natural gut.

I'm also 6'2", very heavy and powerful enough (former power forward in bball), that hits flat and through the ball.

So I tried the 2010 six one 95 18x20 with 4g 16l at 54 lbs, and didn't have any arm issues... so it may be the new models or just that particular stringing on the demo.

I had the wrist pain with both 2012 6.1 I own w different string setups also. I'm considering moving to yonex just to make sure my arm stays healthy and I can play for many more years

You may want to spent first $60 on a full bed of premium natural gut.

I also experience wrist pain with the 6.1 95. It got so bad that I have to ice my wrist everyday since my team state final match two days ago. The pain still lingers and it's pretty annoying since I can't really do anything involving the rotation of my right hand since it aggravates it.
