Wrist question again.

Hey, I know this has been brought up countless times, but I'm still not understanding what the wrist is supposed to do on forehand, backhand, serve, etc.

Forehand- So when I pull my racket back, my wrist stays loose? So when I wing forward to make contact with the tennis ball, my wrist should stay "laid back" and then as I finish my follow through, my wrist should just "flick" by itself? Is that correct?

1 hand Backhand- My wrist is firm and stiff?

Serve- Same as the forehand?

Volleys- Stiff wrist?

Again, I realized this has been brought up several times, but I just want a better understanding of the task of the wrist during a tennis swing.

Thanks for your time.

Uggggg....

uhggg. no need for the search button either. just look at the front page. other than that, you pronate your wrist on the serve to open up the racquet at contact point. as for forehand, it acts as a hinge for more power. you dont let it completely loose, and you dont try to move your racquet with your wrist, because it will give u bad tendonitis, like it did for me. You lay back your wrist on the swing, and let the motion take your wrist into a natural position. (sorry, i cant explain things well)

Hmph, don't be lazy and read the damn thread "wrist on forehand", this has been explained and discussed to the limit already, or just play and forget about it, it isn't a big deal anyway

Haha, you guys swear I didn't read any of the previous threads on this subject. I've read at least most of them but I still don't get the concept of the function of the wrist. I'm not doing this just to annoy you. I just want to understand the function of the wrist during a tennis swing better. And I've asked my questions on "wrist on forehand", it's just that no one bothered to respond.

Zeppy,

It works extremely well for me to keep the grip firm -- like a good business handshake -- and consequentially the same for the wrist. Actually, ignore the wrist. Just relax the arm as you swing. Good timing and decent racket speed will produce that laid back wrist effect which you don't even feel.

Oh so don't think about it during a forehand then. What about when I'm doing a backhand, volley, and serves?

Forehand - Pull back your racquet as far as you can while maintaing your western/semi-western forehand grip and lock your wrist.
1HBH - I'm not a 1HBH user so I can't help you on this one, but I am learning the backhand slice so just lock your wrist.
Serve - Loosen the wrist a bit since Slice or Kick serve, you'll be flicking that wrist.
Volleys - Lock your wrist and keep it stiff when you're punching the ball. When you're volleying with your backhand, loosen it up a bit.

When you're playing tennis, try not to think about these things too much and just play your game. Get used to doing it and then you won't have any trouble.
