$(WSJ) 300 Million for an Aging Tennis Star? Roger Federer Is Worth It, Uniqlo Says

I have been at the US Open for four days so far and not seeing anyone wearing Fed's new Uniqlo gear. The company may go bankrupt on this deal. Is Nike still paying Federer any fee to wear the Nike shoes?

That is probably because they are not delivering it to customers yet.

Noone except Federer/team and Nike knows what the shoe situation is.

Why do you care what happens with Uniqlo?

Wait, WSJ?

But someone on TT said those figures were impossible because they've read on a nobody's blog that it was 10mil/year at max :(:(

In Uniqlo‘s defense they are gearing up for AO 2019.

They will hardly go bankrupt, have billions in sales every year - but the CEO obviously let his fanboyism affect his business sense and he overpaid by a huge amount.

Still no word on a Nike shoe deal. IMHO they are probably doing event by event deals. Given the contentious nature of the clothing deal - and ongoing fight over the RF logo - I wonder if Nike really wants to do any more with him and soon Fed will be in Adidas or some other shoe.

If Fed loses to Nick and first week in Australia it will be very interesting if his fanbase stays loyal and does not jump to the Nick or Tsitsipas bandwagons. Uniqlo is on the hook for $300m to Fed. His selling power can crash very fast.

I think a lot of people are missing the point here...This is a business decision by all parties.
Nike is an established company that has been on a somewhat of a downtrend. Paying 30 mil to Fed isn't worth it to them for many reasons. If Nike is on a downtrend while Fed was with Nike, why on earth would they want to pay him even more when he won't be playing within the next 5 years. Just doesn't make a lot of financial sense. Economics 101... Now Fed might not be worth 30 mil a year, especially when he will be retiring pretty soon, but to Uniqlo, which I believe is on an uptrend, is totally worth it. Start hitting the western markets, potentially start having a decent athletic line. So opportunities here are far greater to Uniqlo than they are to Nike.
Again, these are just opportunities. With that you need good management to run it and that is yet to be seen.
Now, do I like Uniqlo, meh it's ok, I like higher end fashion. His US open kits look kind of cheap and materials nowhere near look as good as Nike's, however Nike's kits as of last 18 months have been pretty ugly to say the least. All of their mid range players wearing the same stuff and it's not very nice looking stuff.

fed is crazy famous in india and other asian markets; they will make their money back easily

I have to agree they are safe with the billions of consumers in the east and can slowly obtain new consumers in the west. Plus, Federer is a lifer when he retires I don't think he will quit playing like Pete, Andre, or Andy. He is likely to play some more exo's and continue to sell more product.

Absolutely ridiculous. He is not worth 30 million a year. At best he’s a loss leader that will be out of the spotlight less than halfway through his contract.

When the direct deposits come in with all those zeros, the supermarket thinks he's worth that, the realtor thinks he's worth that, the bank thinks he's worth that, uni obviously does. You're worth what someone is willing to pay. Take that st vincent pro staff it's worthless to 99% of the population, to the right person it's woth 3.50 or $350.

Agree with a previous comment. Fed is so big in Asia. Just look at the crowd on TV. Uniqlo knows what they're doing. Especially by offering stuff at an affordable price
