Probably another third set to be played by BHD. I believe that all her matches in this tournament were won on third set.

I like Pliskova but she's too much of a streaky player for my taste. Not enough consistency to her shots.
Her lateral movement is also poor/lazy.
Still hoping she can win this match.

@Sudacafan @spystud
But that grunt!
Didn't notice Simona grunting much in her 1st set in the SF -- even tho she was losing & frustrated. Started hearing it late in the set & subsequent sets. Perhaps it came after she ran down a lot of shots earlier in the match.

She grunts only on serves and TS shots. Never hear it on flat shots or underspin shots. Pretty quiet when hitting overheads, volleys and dropshots.

My beIN Sports 1 channel switched to ATP Montreal now. I wonder why they don't put the WTA on channel 2 or 3 ...

Channel 2 is showing Padel tennis.

Channel 3 is showing soccer.

I liked Seles and she grunted. But she was so brilliant I had to give her a pass really. Maybe it’s just I’m not so crazy about Halep anyway.
If not for Seles and other grunters from Nick B's academy in the 80s & 90s, there would be far fewer grunters in tennis today. Many players emulated that behavior back then (& since)

Simona's grunt is a tad annoying to my ear but tolerable for the most part. But I could not handle Monica's high-dB sounds at all. Could only watch her matches on mute. Might have been a higher dB level. Or it could have been the pitch or some other aspect of her grunt that was particularly unpleasing to my ear.

Congrats Bea Haddad Maia on her breakthrough to this wta1000 final. Pliskova, almost pushed a 3rd set, a top veteran, and a good run for the tournament.

Very trained grunt.

This fresh Brazilian big girl. Is she good or is she zoning?
A little bit of both. I was forced to watch a few of her matches because I was cheering for her opponent.
She's 26 so no spring chicken. Almost 10 years on the tour, so hardly fresh.

She's got game, no doubt, but there are a ton of things that turn me off about her, not to mention her fake grunt.

She hasn't done much on the tour to this point, so probably just zoning now in her career.

I've seen enough of Halep losing matches she should win. Maia in this Final.
Yup, Simona has lost a number of matches she shoulda won. But she's looking like peak Simona again. Only had 1 troubling set this past week in Toronto. Beatriz has dropped 3 and had a couple of close TBs.

SH has won 2 of the 3 Canadian O finals she played and has a 78% win record here so she does have a good shot. Especially if the Simona who steamrolled Serena on grass shows up for this final.

She may drop the 1st set against the Brazilian lefty but I suspect that she'll own the other 2 sets.

Before being suspended for 10 months from July 2019 because of doping, Bia's highest ranking was 58. After the suspension, she had to work hard on the ranking starting with ITF and smaller WTA tournaments where sometimes she's gone deep (and won) but usually got bounced early with bigger tournaments. She dominated the UK grass courts this season before Wimbledon by winning 2 titles and got to SFs of the other but got beaten in R1 at Wimbledon by Juvan. She's dangerous (tall, lefty) but the more talented and experienced players on tour will figure out a way to play her the second time they meet.

Simona become annoying when the grunt last until the opponent hit and grunt as well lol.

I've never ever seen that happen with Simona. Can you provide an example of that happening? When ppl have made that claim about Simona or others, it has not been backed up by their evidence.

On her longer lasting grunts, the loudest part is right after she hits the ball and then it subside shortly after the ball crosses the net. I have no problem hearing the ball bounce or hearing the opponent hit the ball at all

Just looked at the highlights for a couple other of Simona's matches and saw / heard the same thing. Even on her longer grunts, it subsided and I could clearly hear the ball bounce and the opponent hit the ball.

Noticed something else that Simona does very similar to Vika. Sometimes she makes a subdued inhale sound when the ball bounces on her own side and then makes a loud exhale grunt right after she hits the ball. But I did not have any problem hearing Simona's contact

IFF Simona was still making noise as her opponent made contact, it would likely be more of a disadvantage to her (Simona) than it would be for her opponent. It is important to hear an opponent's contact because it provides you with a lot of useful contact information -- even before your visual system can determine where their shot is going and how it was hit.

I didn't say who's advantage who and I believe Simona doesn't intentionally do that, I just think it's annoying. She definitely has a habit to stop once an opponent hit, you can watch vs Kerber, and Stephens.
That being said, I've never watched her live, so don't know how loud she actually is. Sometimes TV can exaggerate the grunt.

The Steam is represented well in this Toronto tournament final today! Beatriz using the wilson steam 100 (blx) mold while Halep reportedly uses the steam 99 mold under their Blade pj's.

For those watching on Tennis Channel, what do you think of CiCi Bellis as the color commentator for this match?
