WTA 2024 Toronto 1000

Canada's own lost, Leylah lost to Krueger 4 and 2. Watched a bit. Saw Krueger hitting a lot of winners, overpowering Leylah. Still in doubles with her sister.

She lost in 3, but props for even showing up after winning DC.

Aryna about to take the first from Yuan.

I had no idea LAF had a tennis playing sister!
I vaguely remember seeing the sister's name before. Then the other day saw the two playing and I thought I saw Leylah when I saw the sister and soon realized the sisters! The younger sister held her own in doubles. But, Leylah was definitely the captain and the finisher of many of the rallies. It was a decent doubles to watch.

Zhang Shuai out, Leylah gets Hibino instead.
Didn't know Zhang Shuai is still in doubles and only withdrew from singles. Usually it's the other way around or the player will withdraw from the whole tournament.

Probably feeling some anxiety for singles considering the reason she took some time off. She probably has better chance to move to the next round in doubles anyway. But wait, she's playing against Mertens/ Muhammad ...

Ostapenko meltdown in progress against Townsend. Down a set at 6-2. Townsend up 4-0 on 2nd. Ostapenko was missing returns left and right.

This was so pathetic by the WTA & ATP. The fact they kept the calendar the same knowing full well the Olympics would be right before Canada so players would go from French clay and then need to fly straight to North American hard court.

Also that it went from French clay to the Grass season back to French clay then straight to North American hard.

Did they hope more players would withdraw from the Olympics and prioritize the WTA tour event and skip the ITF event?

Cause this is a joke.

Maybe we should pay more attention to Diana Schnaider, she just beat Gauff in straight sets. Starting this year at No. 60, Schnaider has won 3 titles on 3 different surfaces and her ranking already rose No. 23, very close to top 20 debut.

Kudos to Shnaider, who was in the Olympic Doubles final just 5 days ago. She seems to have bucked the trend of players not backing up from the Olympics.

However, despite her 3 titles and skyrocketing up the rankings, beating Gauff today is just her first top career win. She's had some good draws. But she's made the most of it!

Canadian QF's:

(14) Shnaider v (6) Samsonova
(3) Pegula v Stearns

(8) Navarro v (LL) Townsend
(PR) Anisimova v (2) Sabalenka

Some mix...

5 Americans as already mentioned.
