WTA 2024 Toronto 1000

WTA & ATP with massive egg on their face not making any form of adjustment to the calendar to factor in the Olympics.

Well you have to understand it's essentially a rivalry between ATP/WTA and ITF, it's not in their interests to help each other around. Grand slams and Olympics are all owned by ITF, ATP/WTA has nothing to gain from these events. They cannot take down grand slams, but for Olympics, If you ask me, I think they are doing their best to sabotage it. ATP/WTA don't reward any ranking points on Olympics matches and medals, and they schedule tournaments in the same week where the players can gain 500 points, because of this, quite a few top ranked players choose not to participate in Olympics and play ATP/WTA tournaments instead, and that's exactly what they want to see.

Just shows how often Sabalenka gets dragged to 3 long sets that I was actually disappointed with that result.

Having a clay Olympics in Paris was always going to make this an awkward summer (and especially for the Canada event). It will much easier next time in L.A. Presumably it will be hard courts too.

The energy level at the Toronto tournament was very low and the matches I saw were not very high quality.

That was the first time I watched the women play live though. Maybe that's how it is.

And that’s a wrap.

Semis:

Emma v. Amanda
JPeg v. Shnaider
Actually not that bad of a SF despite all the upsets.

Shnaider with her great year and #14 seed.
Pegula, the #3 seed and defending champ.
Navarro the #8 seed and also had a fantastic year.
Anisimova always had the potential and is returning to form after qualifying in Washington and making the QF last week.

Haven't really caught much of this tournament with the Olympics going on and just looked at the doubles.

Wildcards Leylah Fernandez and her younger sister are into the SF's with some good wins over the #5 seeds Schuurs/Stefani and Mladenovic/Zhang.

Wow, I caught up with Anisimova v. Sabalenka on recording and Amanda demolished Aryna. Anisimova broke her in 4 of her 9 service games and won the last 10 points of the match. Was not expecting her to cruise like that.

So happy for Amanda.:cry: Hope she can build on this in the weeks ahead. She's still young enough to get her career back on track, and surely this result will get her back in the top 100 now, right? Which will help.

If she can knock off Moneybags in the semi that'd be a bonus at this point. Fingers crossed for it, but I ain't holding my breath. I can see 30-odd unforced errors incoming.:cautious:

It's gotten her well into the top 100, she's up to #66 now. A win over Navarro would push her just in the top 50 at #49!

Both parties looked tired throughout the match, IMO. A lot of short points with uncharacteristic UE from both players. Jess celebrated (or not :D ) her win with her trademark muted 'celebration'.

Is the Monday Final the original plan? Or is it due to Rain delay(s)?

Hmm, wonder why she didn't get a WC(Andreescu, Dolehide, Stearns, Wozniacki got them)
Hmm, interesting question. If I were to guess, because her ranking (#90) is not as high as Woz's (#84). The other two Americans because it's in Cincinnati. Andreescu, probably using her Protected Ranking (around 64?). As for PR, apparently the rule says that it can be used to enter 2 Grand Slam max.

JPeg going for her 3rd WTA 1000. It's funny, she only has 5 titles but has been stable in the top 5 for well over 2 years now. Shows her consistency.

Could win title #6 with half her title haul being 1000's.

Anisimova meanwhile going for title #4.

It's funny, of the 2 players you'd think the former #3 Pegula would be the one to have made a slam SF but nope, Amanda did ;)

New formula of set won when playing 3? A-B-A, on in this specific case, P-A-P. Kidding a side, it's actually quite common for this to happen as the player who originally won set 1 starts to "wake up" and play better again.
