Sabalenka would be liking her chances, the 2x defending champ from 2018 and 2019 when it was last held before the Wuhan Covid came along.

Truly never thought the WTA would return to Wuhan considering Covid's origins.

The Andreeva sisters are supposed to play each other on Wednesday. It's their first H2H. If it follows the current rank, the younger Mirra (#19) should prevail against her older sister Erika (#73).

Magda Linette’s on-court interview at the Wuhan Open was cut short when she tried to address a controversial comment she made on social media.

The Polish tennis star caused a media storm in China as she made a remark about a “virus” while travelling to this week’s WTA 1000 event.

Linette received a frosty reception for her opening match as fans demanded an apology. But she was stopped when trying to say sorry.

The world No. 45 sparked backlash when she shared a now-deleted post about her trip to Wuhan, in which she appeared to reference the Covid pandemic. Linette shared a photo of her train to the Chinese city on X (formerly known as Twitter).

In Polish, she wrote: “The virus database has been updated.” The 32-year-old swiftly removed the tweet after drawing criticism.

But the Chinese fans didn’t forget. Linette wasn’t received well when she took to the court in Wuhan on Tuesday to face Liudmila Samsonova.

Spectators shouted out occasionally during the match but Linette still managed to upset the 11th seed, winning 6-2 6-2. Afterwards, she attempted to apologise.

The tweet was not a good idea. People have short memories about Wuhan, though. Chinese interviewer did her own censoring, just as you would expect in China.

interesting, let's see who wins here, sometimes it's not easy to play against your sibling

Her 2024 is insane.

She's won just 15 matches and lost 12.

But in those 15 matches, 7 of them were her Wimbledon title and 4 were at the Australian Open en route to the QF. 11 wins at 2 of the slams and then 11 other super early losses at the remaining tournaments she's entered.
Meanwhile someone like Emma Navarro has won 52 matches and lost 23 matches. However, she's got just the 250 title from Hobart in January in terms of trophies this year.

or she has great efficiency on tournament, either going deep for two weeks or leaving early on day 1

Yeah, if not for Krejcikova's RG title, Wimbledon would look like an absolute fluke given the year she's had.

lol, I knew it, Erika beat Mirra in straight sets 6:3 6:1
Good call. It must be tough to play big sis psychologically when you've completely overshadowed her career.

I would rather think it's more of Erika's own effort, "Mirra can get all the attention she wants but I will beat her!"

That really is insane... and a little infuriating. I like her, and like watching her play, but how can I tune into her matches when you have no idea what you will get, but it will likely be awful?

Also crazy that Navarro has won 52 matches this year. That's a lot! Good for her.

There's a huge psychological factor at play when it comes to the older/younger sibling dynamic.

They probably played TONS of tennis against one another as kids, and the older sibling (Erika) probably dominated their play for the vast majority of the time, simply due to being more physically mature. But that stuff stays in their heads, no doubt.
