C. Branstine has retired when match point down in the W35 Bakersfield.

When you desperately want the history books to show you didn't 'really' lose to your opponent.

No seriously, I've no idea what happened.

I think Alexandrova may have blown this.

Led 5-3 final set with match point on her serve, gets broken.

Now she's serving to stay in this down 5-6.

That is going to sting. Alexandrova came back from 0-5 down in the deciding tiebreak, had a match point at 6-5, then double-faulted down match point to lose 6-8.

lol, it's a WTA match, anything can happen. In the TB, Wang won the first 5 points in a row, you would think the match is over for Alexandrova, but no she won the next 6 pointS and got her second MP, Wang woke up just in time to win the next two points and had her own first MP, Alexandrova double fault, Wang through to semi. :sneaky:

Random thought as I watch Sabalenka but has the WTA ever had a tournament in Belarus? Given the number of players that have come out of there it's kind of crazy even in the era where tournaments were held in Russia. What about exhibitions? I'm surprised they never did an Azarenka v Sabalenka exhibition there unless neither of them have an interest in returning there.

Both Alexandrova and Wang are pretty inconsistent players even within a match, I suppose that's what happens with that game style. Wang did well to steady the ship at 6-5 down with that big first serve and then take the next 2 points to finish it. Alexandrova with a DF to finish makes sense. I think Wang will have a better shot against the higher ranked compatriot Zheng than Paolini. I can't see her doing much against Sabalenka or Gauff so here's hoping the winner of Paolini v Zheng makes the final. I'd like to see either Sabalenka v Paolini in the final or Gauff v Paolini or Zheng. We haven't seen Gauff v Paolini in 2024 and Gauff v Zheng has only ever happened once (Gauff W in Rome 2024). Paolini v Sabalenka has also not happened in 2024 where we have seen a different Jasmine.

Anyone know what happened to that WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai? They played it a few years ago I'm sure when Maia beat Zheng in the final. Not sure why it's odd the calendar when the Chinese events are back in full swing.

Edit: turns out that Maia win was 2023 which feels like way longer ago than that in my head. The format was kind of odd as it was a lucrative tournament for players who didn't make the top 8 cut off.

I really want a Sabalenka - Qinween final because Sabalenka in Chinese media/fans is "The mountain Qinween hasn't yet overcome"

Something tells me Sabalenka will only lose to Zheng and Gauff on really bad days if it's to happen. The more she beats them the harder it will be for them to mentally feel like they have a shot against her even on an off day. When you look back at how erratic Sabalenka used to be when he ceiling was high yet her lows were painful to witness, it's actually quite crazy how consistent she is nowadays when she has such a power heavy game. Her drops shots don't even have to be the best when she's driven them so far back/wide.

Paolini took 2nd set to force 3rd against Zheng. Zheng left court during changeover after short discussion with umpire. Paolini had brief talk with umpire. I sensed some concerns that Paolini wanted to make sure Zheng was back in time. After about 2 minutes, umpire called and said on the walkie it had been 2 minutes already. Less than a minute later, he turned to Paolini and said something like "she's walking back already".

Does Zheng leave the court often before 3rd and not come back on time? Didn't pay attention.

This years Aus Open runner up beats this years French Open and Wimbledon runner up!

Zheng pulls out the win in a good match against Paolini.

H2H Zheng now 3:0 against Paolini, interestingly, the previous 2 meets when they met, Zheng won both tournaments, one WTA 250 in the final, one WTA 500 in the semi.

There's a new story that says Zheng had words with Fernandez's box and then words directly with Fernandez during their recent match. It was not friendly. Conflicts with Fernandez, Navarro, and Collins just in the past few months.
Where there's smoke.....

Just saw this.

Zheng told Fernandez’s dad to be quiet. Leylah went to the net to ask her what Zheng said to her box and then told Zheng to be more respectful. Zheng then rolled her eyes and complained to the chair umpire about Leylah’s dad.

Also don’t forget she was rude to Sabalenka too.

She’s really getting a reputation, I’m not a fan.

We are going to see more from her, Zheng is very confrontational, she doesn't take sh1t from anyone including her own family, she went to media and blasted Fissette for breach of contract, told the reporters she blamed her parents, it's their fault that they hired him , then went back to Riba herself. In her interviews, Zheng made it very clear that she is ambitious and aggressive, she likes the spotlight and the nickname Queen Wen fits her perfectly, anyone expecting a quiet and demure tennis player from Asia will be thoroughly disappointed.

I'm in Zheng side here she asked him to be quiet when she was about to receive, Fernandez dad is annoying af IRL.

I am not sure it's a good idea or not, most players would prefer raising the issue with the umpire or complaining it to the reporters after the match, but for Zheng winning the next point is far more important than ignoring it or taking the high road, which probably were never in her consideration.

Vekic better hope not to meet Zheng again, she already lost 3 times this year, and Zheng is the type that revenge on haters by beating them whenever they meet.

I don't get other player complaining, like do they expect for Zheng to kiss and smiley selfie in locker rooms?

Lol, it's not about the locker room, it's her aggressiveness and her perceived "big shot" fame from nowhere, when Zheng was dubbed as Queenwen two years ago, she was barely ranked 80 and didn't really do much, but clearly she enjoyed being the new girl that everyone was talking about, I remember at the time, there were tennis fans questioning why Zheng was mentioned as a factor like some top 10 player, she was nobody! You can imagine how annoyed the other girls on tour think about her before even meeting her on court, and her aggressivenes doesn't help either.

No, but they probably expect her to not pick fights with every player on tour and be rude. It’s pretty clear what type of person Zheng is here.
mate Leylah needs to tell her father to not be rude to her opponents and honestly to Leylah herself. Even at AO where the player box is not directly on players side he was super loud, let alone here where you have the box beside you.

Coaching rules need to be enforced that when your player on the other side just shut the hell up.

sabalenka v gauff on T2 now
This should be an interesting match
They got sinner v machac on Tennis channel so will be switching back and forth

it looks like gauff's first serve has improved but second is still the same

Coco returning brilliantly, breaks back again 2-1. Coco DF 3 times to give the break back 2-2.
If Coco fix her second serve, she will be scary good. The FH just getting better in a matter of weeks.
