The qualifying draw was packed full of players that I'm interested in, Jovic, Siniakova, McNally, Boulter, Andreescu, Eala, Parry, Sonmez etc.

Only 1 of those players made it into the main draw, though Siniakova and McNally faced each other in the 1st round of qualifying. Jovic's long streak (admittedly mostly at ITF / challenger level) of victories after winning the 1st set, came to an end.

When this tournament was created in 2014, I was pretty unhappy that Tokyo was downgraded in favour of it.

Joint gets it done on the 5th Match Joint. Yeah for her I call them match Joints rather than points. She'll need a good spliff after almost throwing away that tie break.

Kessler/Cristian started the same time as the other 3, McCartney just now won the opening breaker. 82-minute set.

And of course Cristian follows the marathon set with a quick bagel. Believe Kessler had a similar fatigue issue recently too.

muchova looks like she is about to fall over and Marta gets broken lol that's wta for you. hopefully muchova didn't catch Wuhan virus

muchova wins second set if Marta would just play consistent I think muchova would have been done but Marta decides to do her best coco impression and double faults every service game. not even sure who is going to win 3rd because muchova looks like she is going to pass out but Marta can't keep ball in court lol not very good tennis to be honest but it's like a trainwreck and can't turn away

Wonder what that's for. I didn't see anything wrong with her up until 1-5 first set (when I had to leave the house). There was one ball the commentators were surprised she didn't make an effort to get, but I wondered if it was just frustrated laziness because of the score.

yeah muchova pulled it out she actually came to the net a bunch more in 3rd Marta is mental she was in tears throughout the set just crying in front of her coach

a lot of players train in Florida where it is just as hot and humid so not sure what their deal is but yeah the Europeans are definitely struggling in china

Sramkova-Kalinskaya has been competitive in a normal way, not the last-person-standing endurance struggle the other matches have been. Wonder if the center court is worse to play on than the outer courts.

First to Noskova over Yulia, that’s enough tennis for me today.

Sorana v. Jelena next would probably be fun though.

Raducanu simply doesn’t have the physical or mental attributes required to be an elite professional tennis player.

Since she won the US Open, I have consistently thought that she had the makings of a top player, and that it would only be a matter of time for it to all click, but the reality is that her victory was a complete fluke. I don’t know whether her body cannot cope with the exertion of tennis, or whether she has an unusually weak pain threshold, but the number of times she has pulled out of matches in the past few years is crazy.

This is her first of the year, 13 career total.
Badosa sitting at 35 career.

Mirra always involved in these gruelling battles against lower-ranked players, especially those who can play with variety.
Something desperately needs to change in her game.
At the moment she doesn't seem to have a differentiating shot in her arsenal, and her play is like watching an ant fighting against a tide of thick molasses.
