No Aryna again, even though she's actually in Dubai. Iga out also.

Another 56-player field, action begins Sunday morning.

Draw

Sonmez & Bejlek both received WCs, but they face each other in R1.

Peyton & Baptiste are the two LLs so far.

So no Sabalenka, Swiatek, Zheng, Osaka, Keys, and Kostyuk

And presumably Rybakina, Muchova, and Mboko are on retirement watch.

This could get very open

At what point do we think 8 W1000s are better than 10?

First three today ain’t bad.

Gracheva v. Sramkova
Jovic v. Rakhimova
Ruse v. America Emma

We ride.

Cocciaretto is the latest withdrawal. She only reached the quarters (?) last week. Jesus wept. We've reached the point where if you reach the quarters, you're on the withdrawal watchlist for the following week.

Racucanu plays Ruzic instead (a player on a 5 match losing streak). Then Uchjima/Zakharova. Should be reaching the last 16 here.

American girlnextdoor Emma looks like she is starting to get back into tennis shape with win

kenin next up against tauson

smart move by Muchova to pull out of Dubai. With her injury prone past it's probably best for her body to not take any chances and just take a break.

Dubai getting sloppy seconds but expected when you have back to back 1000

Perhaps British Emma can make the final of this 250-level Masters 1000.
The calendar and current state of the WTA seems tailor-made for her to remain in the top 30 without having to improve much at all.

With Kenin I'm never sure whether (i) she simply hasn't been able to get back to her Slam-winning level (2020) or (ii) she was good enough to win at that point in her career but the tour has simply overtaken her. Maybe a bit of both?

Dang it, I missed the triple-breadstick again yesterday.
