WTA 2026 Dubai 1000

Good on Anisimova. For some reason, Andreeva just annoys me and I can never root for her. Love that Anisimova is maximizing her talent.
I don't really get this. She gets upset, yes, and even a little bratty, but she isn't disrespectful or annoying in her celebrations. Nor does she feign modesty (cough, Gauff, cough cought)

If anything, I feel the opposite way. Something about Andreeva makes me want to root for her.

Ruzic on course for the semis at the moment. Raducanu's defeat to her is looking less embarrassing by the round. In fact Emma came the closest to beating her so far (2-0 up deciding set).
This has aged well.

Is there anything worse than the Raducanu apologists? When will it ever end?

Would that be, just perhaps, that unholy smirk planted on her face since time immemorial in the jrs?
No that.
There was some blatant entitlement somewhere. She was petty fighting the crowd. I'm allergic to that.
I just can't remember what it was. Maybe last RG.

She's a teenage girl, ffs. And at RG she had the notoriously nasty French crowd against her.

Again, makes me like her more!

I'd give you two thumbs down if I could for this nonsense.
Both statements are completely ridiculous.

Crowds are never on your arse without a reason. Not in tennis.
Dimitrov has never got anything but love from the crowds, French or otherwise. Because he can behave.

And I don't give a toss how old she is.
She's a multi multi millionaire whose salary is paid entirely by that crowd.
Whatever problem you have with them, you suck it up. You are better than them. And your fantastic job exists entirely for their entertainment.

This Eala girl seems very popular. I dont follow WTA that much since Serena quit but Eala seems to be the star of the tournament. Then I found out she is ranked outside top 30 or something and hasnt won any WTA tournament.

That serve needs a lot of work.
She's the first significant WTA player to ever some out of the Phillipines/South East Asia (I could be wrong). She's a mega star over there. Dubai has a large Filipino population, so she was the darling of this tournament. Filipino fans are super passionate!

All that being said, it's refreshing to see her & Janice Tjen, from Indonesia, make major inroads on tour. That part of world has been under represented for too long.

Um what? It's a "ridiculous" statement to point out the FACT that she is a teenage girl? Huh?

And the French crowd were on her solely because the Frenchwoman she was playing against was vastly inferior, and they were doing everything possible to help her overcome the talent gap.

Yes, these are all well paid athletes, blah, blah, blah... but part of what makes tennis special is the human side of the sport.

Something tells me you didn't have much luck with blond girls in your life...

You are correct. In all points.
It's been fun. Let's do this again sometime

She is not maximizing her talent. If she were, she’d be 20 lbs lighter and would have won four sets out of four against Pegula this year, rather than one out of five. Her ball striking is well beyond Pegula’s and is at least comparable to Sabalenka’s.

As much as I'd like to agree, we don't know why she is carrying the weight she is carrying... Are you suggesting that if she became obsessed with her weight she'd miraculously become a great mover? I don't see that happening. I'd rather have her being obsessed with her tennis than her appearance.

And since I know everyone is on pins & needles for the three 125 finals this week...

Oeiras, Portugal: Golubic v. Snigur
Somewhere in France: Salkova v. Lazaro Garcia
Mighty Midland, TX: Guo v. Charaeva

Sloane is entered in Merida, but her marriage is over.

Former US Open tennis champion Sloane Stephens and former U.S. men's national soccer player Jozy Altidore are ending their marriage after four years.

Stephens, who won the 2017 US Open, posted a story on Instagram announcing the split Saturday.

"Jozy and I have decided to end our marriage," the post read. "With peace, I am navigating this transition with mutual respect and kindly ask for privacy during this time. Thank you for your love, understanding and continued support."

Stephens, 32, was also the runner-up at the 2018 French Open. Altidore, 36, scored 42 goals over 115 appearances for the U.S. men's soccer team from 2007 to 2019 and had a long professional career in Major League Soccer and overseas.
Next week's thread later.
