Who will win Beijing?

This is like a WTA Masters. They have a confusing system in WTA, and they constantly keep changing it.

It's tough to say who is the favorite. Serena probably doesn';t care, Russians and Serbs are hit-and-miss. Sharapova is probably the best bet here.

She is in form at the moment but her serve IMO is still an issue.

Safina loses to nobody WC Zhang Shuai ranked #226 in the world. I didn't believe it at first, but now these last two losses may just make her the worst #1 of all time. Hopefully Serena wins and puts an end to this mockery once and for all. She'll retake #1 now with a win in her next match.

Safina would be best served taking this year off and regroup for 2010. She needs to sort her head out.

Also, Venus is disappointing me recently. She has command of a lot of matches then goes off the boil completely. She had 14 DF's today. I think she has Russianserveitis, probably contracted from Safina/Dementieva/Sharapova.

people who live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones, eh, James Blake:?: ....... AS IN losing to then-world-ranked No. 113 Guillermo Canas in April 2009 in straight sets!

did anyone else notice something strange about that draw?

only 4 players got byes - Li Na, Radwanska, Sharapova, & Jankovic - who were the semifinalists in Tokyo last week.

when did this sort of draw manipulation become legal? wonder what the other players think.

I know its tough to play back to back weeks when you go deep in an event, but...

What are you talking about?

Your facts are abit off...

Back on topic. Your continual defense of the WTA no matter what flies in the face of the results. Venus and Safina go out again early at a major event, yet everything is all roses on the WTA? I think not...

you think not. and you remember not? :D
how quickly we forget when memory is painful!
you used losing to a player out of her class as a bludgeon, and I reminded you that that bludgeon is a two-edged sword.

apparently some detractors like to pretend that tennis players are automatons, robots ...... but unfortunately for them all their theories go out the window when the reality hits that all players, both men and women, are nothing but mere human beings.

=== eta:

just because the acronym "wta" is in the title of this thread does not make the wta a topic of this thread, because it is not. you have many other threads available for bashing the wta. doing so in the thread whose topic is a particular tournament is, in itself, off topic.

the topic of this thread is the tournament at shanghai, china, and the performances of the players in this tournament during this week in October 2009.

You can clearly see here that Blake did not lose to Chuidinelli as you wrongly claimed. He lost to Wawrinka, and defeated Chuidinelli in the dead rubber.

http://www.daviscup.com/results/tieresult.asp?tie=100012236

And even if he DID lose to Chudinelli (which he didn't), that doesn't excuse Dinara's losses to players not even in her league rankings wise 2 tournaments running. I am not a WTA hater, simply a realist. There is no excuse for the world's #1 to lose to players ranked >100 spots lower than her in the world rankings. None. Did you watch either match? I watched the match in Tokyo, and the way she lost was deplorable. Sure her opponent played ok, but Safina absolutely choked and looked like a park level player at times. That's not hate, that's facts. Your attempt to parry my fair criticism of Safina into an attack on Blake failed miserably.

Now, what reasonable excuse is there for a world's #1 to have the form she's shown the past two tourneys? None of this simplistic, 'people are human' stuff. Try and actually be analytical for once, and tell me how a world's #1 (soon to be former #1) loses to Wildcards and Qualifiers can be explained away so simply.

odd what some people find funny.
it's a fact, nothing more.

same as this one:
(unseeded) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) d.
(3) Venus Williams (USA) 36 61 64

this is not as funny because Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is ranked number 39 and Zhang Shuai is currently 226. I bet not even Chinese fans know much about Zhang Shuai.

i think safina will lose her numer one spot, after australian open
safina use to play bad at slams, now she is even playing bad at 'normal' tournaments

Safina is breaking down. I think first she could use a relaxing beach holiday, the pressure is obviously crushing her spirit, and then a new coach to sort out all the issues in her game (especially the serve) and maybe a therapist to help her relax during matches. She is better than this.

my point exactly ... it's not funny! :)
(otoh, there's no accounting for some people's humor) :D

From Anastasia's post-match interview:

". . . Q: What was the secret of your success today?

A: I think the secret was that I just went today and I just wanted to enjoy the match and enjoyed playing out there. I have nothing really to lose and I just win with that spirit on court. I wanted to show good tennis my best and, especially we played last week, so I thought if I¡¯m going to get any thoughts through my mind and if I¡¯m going to start to think about her, about the score, and things, I¡¯m not going to make it. I just tried to avoid all that stuff going through my mind and just started playing and enjoy it.

Q: What is the secret to beating Venus Williams two weeks in a row?

A: I don't know. There are no secrets, I guess. The first time- it actually was the second time in Tokyo- I didn¡¯t think about anything actually. I was just playing and playing, and point by point. I was just trying to move her as much as I could. I just tried to hit shot by shot, more and more. Hit more than her. I just wanted her to play more and move, because I remembered the first time we played and I lost by 6-0, 6-1 in the beginning of the year. I was just rushing and I was just trying to do something unbelievable, I guess. I just tried to play as simple as I can. Today I just tried to do the same thing. She started out way aggressive today. Especially the first set. She was playing much better. She was already preparing for this match more than she probably was last week. She wanted to kill me I guess. She was playing really well, actually in all the match. I¡¯m quite happy. . . ."

Azarenka up 3-2 and a break. Sharapova calling out the coach already.

Azarenka hits so flat. I'm surprised she makes relatively few UEs.

Sharapova breaks back 3-3.
Azarenka blowing break pts.... and Sharapova holds 4-3.
Azarenka calls for the coach.
Sharapova breaks at love. 5-3 to serve for set.
1st set to Sharapova 6-3. Come on Vika.. you can win more than 40% of your 1st serve and 29% 2nd serve pts..

Wow did Azarenka just blow a 1-3 lead? Disappointing play to say the least...

soy, did you catch the W/UE numbers from the 1st set? I was looking at the JMDP match while they were showing stats.

I only glanced at them. Azarenka didn't make that many errors, but Sharapova dictated the set. 6 aces from Sharapova that set.

Tied 1-1. Sharapova doing her Serena impersonation at serving. 8 aces so far this match.

These line judges are horrible. Azarenka has successfully challenged 3 calls so far.

Sharapova breaks and leads 2-1. Azarenka breaks at love. 2-2.

Azarenka is nothing but a choker. I really thought she was mentally strong after dismantling Serena @ Miami but I realize she's so 1 dimensionnal that she needs to be in the zone. Yes her sex ghoulish screams are horrifying to hear but she's very frustrating to watch. Jeez no wonder she likes Gulbis Same game plan, little brain functionality.

Pennetta drops the 1st set 6-3 to K. Bondarenko.

Dementieva down early to Czink. Is Sharapova the only player with gas left this late in the season? Maybe the late start will work to her advantage. If she wins here, she'll be in the hunt for the top 8.

Azarenka, for all the talk of being a passive server, is hitting first serves around 108 MPH. I could only dream of Safina doing this more than once in a blue moon. Azarenka's won the last 8 points and is up 3-2 in the 2nd set. GO VIKA!

Azarenka has 3 break points..... and breaks! Azarenka up 4-2 and has won the last 12 points. Vika's in the zone!
Great. Sharapova has 2 break points.....1 break pt....DEUCE!
Adv. MS.... Sharapova breaks with authority. On serve. Sharapova serves 3-4.

Azarenka calls the trainer.... sigh
Azarenka returns with tape up her right leg....
4-4 and Azarenka to serve...
5-4 Azarenka. 4 times Azarenka has successfully challenged calls today! Federer needs her as his Hawkeye coach.
5 times now Azarenka has been successful challenging calls!
5-5 now.
6-5 Azarenka. Sharapova to serve after changeover.
6-6 Tie-breaker with Azarenka to start it off.
TB:
1-0 Sharapova
1-1
2-1 Sharapova
3-1 MS
3-2 MS
3-3
4-3 VA
5-3 VA
5-4 VA
6-4 VA
6-5 VA
Set to Azarenka!!!

Man I really like Azarenka's backhand.

Azarenka hung in there somehow and played her game. Got aggressive with her serve and hit some blistering shots. Hope she can keep it up.

Azarenka breaks. The pro-Sharapova crowd is silent. :)

Azarenka leads 2-0. Sharapova to serve.
Sharapova holds. 2-1 Azarenka.
2-2. Sharapova serves.

heh. i love it. another bogus injury timeout from azarenka, and maria says to the umpire "what, is her last name jankovic?"

Did Sharapova just take a shot at Azarenka (and Jankovic) for Vika asking for a trainer? Did she say 'Is her last name Jankovic?" or did i mishear that?

Yeah, I knew I heard that. Man some of these girls really are b!tchy!

Gosh not only is Azarenka a choker but a cheater gamesmanship tennis player as well (I'm starting to dislike VA now).

I'm not the biggest Sharapova fan but seriously that's BS what Azarenka is pulling.

If you can't play the match, forfeit and GTFO b****

Azarenka breaks at love. Up 3-2.
She holds and leads 4-2.
Azarenka blow a BP...DEUCE
BP #2... Sharapova DFs.
Azarenka to serve for match 5-2.

Azarenka called for the trainer while up 4-3 in the 2nd set. Called the trainer again while leading the 3rd set. So she's not pulling a JJ or Bartoli per se. Azarenka does look like she's in some form of pain.

Of course it's a gray area kind of thing but Sharapova certainly thinks she's faking an injury and usually Sharapova doesn't lie about those sort of things so you have to wonder if it's gamesmanship Azarenka is pulling at the moment.

Well if Azarenka wins her match, I better not hear excuses on her next match (forfeit retires because of the previous match).

Sorry but if you're injured, let the fresher opponent advance. That's how it should ALWAYS work.

This is the Vika I've been waiting to see develop. She has been running Sharapova all over the court and putting some oomph in her shots. Now if only her 2nd serve had some bite and variety. Of course I say this and she gets broken.

5-3 Azarenka with Sharapova serving....

7 times now Azarenka has been successful challenging calls. This has to be a record. Not only do Chinese products lag in quality, so do their lines judges.

Wow... When I thought the officials at Montreal were terrible during Kleybanova vs Jankovic match. Those officials should be ashamed of themselves.

These girls have played in spurts. Hard to say who will step up. But that is a mini-choke for Azarenka if she prevails, mega if she loses.

Let's just say if Azarenka pulls this one, I'll be stunned because normally in these circumstances, no way she wins a match when she chokes.
