A clown on the run. Beware!

Hey, MixieP :)

Did you see Francesca in Dubai? She was wearing shorts. If she'd wear them there, I expect her to wear them at IW. TBH, she actually looks better in the shorts. Something about those skirts from Lotto have just not looked flattering on her IMO.

How does Frankie feel about hard courts? I assume she's looking forward to the French clay, but this one's mandatory, so as tenth seed, she gets a bye to R2 and her first match w/b against the winner of: Qualifier from Ukraine, L Tsurenko vs. unseeded Shahar Pe'er

Fran went to the semis in Brisbane, but since then she's played nothing but hard but never made it out of R2 after Brisbane.

what's up with that?

Has anyone noticed that Azarenka and Kvitova are playing doubles together? That's a scary thought!

Lol true, Vika's return of serve combined with Petra's shot-making  they should be handed the trophy already.

Victoria wins both IW and Miami to make it 29-0.

Petra not sure where she's at, ill, injured, out of rhythm - will see.

I think they will win because of several reasons.

They both use a lot of power, which doubles players generally aren't used to.

Aza is on a roll, and number 1.

And usually when the top singles players play dubs, they win.

I'm routing for Ivanovic and Li to make big statements here. I highly doubt Li will be playing like she was this time last year at IW and Miami, she has virtually no points to defend and with no Clijsters around, I can't see her having a mega-choke like at the AO!

I dont know whether or not they will win. Just because you are ranked highly in singles does not mean you will defacto do well in dubs. Have they even played dubs togetlher before? Who even knows if they will make a cohesive team together. Doubles is totally.different from singles.

probably because she has no hips. And Im not saying that to hate on Francesca but lets be real...she doesnt have the most curvaceous feminine body.

Im not expecting anything from Petra she has been out of play so long.

I just hope mentally she is improving.

good catch, Tammo ... I hadn't noticed that ... definitely should put some more butts in the seats to spectate their matches ...

Azarenka's usual partner, Kirilenko is partnering Petrova, pre-Olympics

And I just noticed that Vania King is teaming up with Anna-Lena Grönefeld, instead of her two-time grand-slam-winning partner, Yaroslava Shvedova

hmmmmm ... I don't even see Slava's name on the singles roster either ... that's too bad ... :?:

-----
edit:
K so ... looks like Shvedova is skipping IW and is planning for Miami?

Cirstea survives versus Benesova in 2.75 hrs to move to Round 2. Sounds like a heck of a match and I hear its windy today.

INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA

It was a mixed day for the Americans on Day 1 of the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday afternoon, with Vania King scoring perhaps the biggest win of them all, grinding past in-form Italian Sara Errani.
Errani, who won her third WTA title in Acapulco last week, was probably the most dangerous unseeded player at Indian Wells, just one spot out of the seedings - she had also beaten King handily the only time they had played before, a 63 62 triumph in the early rounds of Carlsbad last summer.
But none of that discouraged King this time, nor did a 5-2 first set deficit - the American hit through the Italian, rallying to win the 57-minute first set then coming back from 3-1 down in the second set to close it out, 76(3) 64.
Awaiting King in the second round is No.13 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who, like all the seeds, received a first round bye. King has won the pair's last two meetings (the American also leads their overall head-to-head, 2-1).

More good news for the Americans came in the form of Jamie Hampton's surprisingly crushing 60 61 win over Polona Hercog. Having made her debut in the elite last week, Hampton was playing her first career match as a Top 100 player, and the confidence showed as she won the first nine games of the match and scored her career-best win over the World No.38 in just 52 minutes.
The other two Americans playing the day session weren't so lucky, with Jill Craybas falling quietly to Mona Barthel, 61 62, and Coco Vandeweghe squandering a 3-1 third set lead to lose to Jarmila Gajdosova, 46 63 63.

Other early winners were Sorana Cirstea, Klara Zakopalova, Galina Voskoboeva, Elena Baltacha, Carla Suárez Navarro, Kimiko Date-Krumm and Timea Bacsinszky. Voskoboeva had the closest call of them all, saving four match points down 5-4 in the third set to beat Marina Erakovic, 57 63 75; but also making narrow escapes were Cirstea, who came from 64 53 down to beat Iveta Benesova, 46 75 76(5), and Bacsinszky, who defeated Anne Keothavong, 64 26 75, her first win since returning from a 10-month foot injury lay-of.

Baltacha also faced some serious trouble, fighting back from 63 42 down, as well as 2-0 down in the third, to survive Arantxa Rus, 36 64 63.
"I'm very, very happy. To finish like that was great," Baltacha said. "I've made some changes recently and have been putting the new elements in my game into my matches. It was so nice to get a win under my belt today.
"I've done well at Indian Wells and when you do well at any tournament, you look forward to coming back. I'm happy to get another win here."
Although she is still with coach Nino Severino, Baltacha has been working with some new people recently. "This is my fifth year working with Nino, but I'm now in my second tournament with Dani Dios as hitting partner, and Judy Murray, our Fed Cup coach, has helped me too. I have great, great people with me."
Baltacha will play No.14 seed and recent Dubai finalist Julia Goerges in the second round. Goerges leads Baltacha in their head-to-head, 2-1.

Wozniacki In Same Half As Ivanovic, Sharapova

Defending champion
Caroline Wozniacki’s path to a third straight final at the BNP Paribas Open could go through two former winners, with the 21-year-old Dane seeded to meet Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round and Maria Sharapova in the semi-finals.

Wozniacki defeated Ivanovic two weeks ago in the Dubai quarter-finals to even their head-to-head series at 2-all, but she trails Sharapova 2-3 in career meetings following a loss to the Russian in the 2011 Rome semi-finals.

Possible quarter-final opponents for the fourth-seeded Wozniacki, who opens her title defence against the winner of American
Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Russian Ekaterina Makarova, include 2011 runner-up Marion Bartoli and 2010 Roland Garros champion Francesca Schiavone.

Great win for Sloane Stephens. The next round will be a true test. Kerber has a lot of momentum and confidence these days. I hope that Sloane competes well and shows what she is truly capable of.

Did anyone see the match between Sloans Stephens and Angelique Kerber? Apparently Sloane was up 6-2;5-1;40-15 but ended up losing 6-2;5-7;4-6. What happened? That's a big time choke.

I didnt see the match, but probly nobody else did either. I'm just as mystified as you, having noticed their early match scores. Even the WTA website failed to provide an answer ...

"... Another seed pulling off a miracle victory was No.18 seed Angelique Kerber, who trailed Sloane Stephens 62 51 and double match point, 40-15 - but the German fought until the bitter end to beat the American wildcard, 26 75 64. ..."

INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA - Three former BNP Paribas Open champions, each of whom is also former World No. 1, will take the court on Saturday, when those on the bottom half of the draw play their second round matches. Caroline Wozniacki, Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic are looking to continue their past success and get their 2012 Indian Wells campaigns off to strong starts.

Saturday, Second Round
Stadium 1

[4] Caroline Wozniacki (DEN #4) vs. Ekaterina Makarova (RUS #42)
Head-to-head: Wozniacki leads 2-0
The last time she took the court here, Caroline Wozniacki was on top of the world, having just won her second title of a season that would see her win six and finish atop the rankings. She has since slipped to No.4 but should not be overlooked at this event, where she not only captured the 2011 title but was runner-up in 2010. However, her opener against Ekaterina Makarova is a dangerous one. Makarova had her best career Grand Slam result at January's Australian Open, upsetting Vera Zvonareva and Serena Williams en route to the quarterfinals. After that, a left wrist injury kept her out of action until her routine first round defeat of Bethanie Mattek-Sands here on Thursday.

[2] Maria Sharapova (RUS #2) vs. Gisela Dulko (ARG #126)
Head-to-head: Sharapova leads 3-1
Maria Sharapova has lost four games combined in her three victories against Gisela Dulko, including most recently just one in the first round of the Australian Open. However, she certainly knows not to overlook the former doubles World No.1 in light of her upset loss to the Argentine in the second round of Wimbledon in 2009. Sharapova took the Indian Wells title in 2006 and also has two semifinal showings. Dulko is no stranger to success here either, having been a quarterfinalist in 2004 and 2006. Sharapova's 2012 has been highlighted by a run to the final at the Australian Open.

[15] Ana Ivanovic (SRB #16) vs. Johanna Larsson (SWE #67)
Head-to-head: tied 1-1
Ana Ivanovic certainly enjoys playing Indian Wells, as she was victorious here in 2008 and was runner-up in 2009. After finishing 2011 with her 12th career title in Bali, she has had an up-and-down 2012 season so far as she continues a push to return to the Top 10. She has split her two meetings with Johanna Larsson, including a bizarre encounter in the first round of the French Open last year when she bageled the Swede in the second set but ended up losing the match.

Li Na beats Zheng Jie 6-1 6-3 to progress to R4 of the BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells. Li lost her first match last year, so a deep run here and in Miami could boost her ranking a lot, and also buffer her loss of points if she fails to defend her French Open title in May.

Nice to see Ivanovic gaining some form. Hope she can go one further.

 Kirilenko given a hindrance for blatantly banging her racquet deliberately on the court 3 times in the middle of a point.

I've never seen someone do that before

If she wants to cheat... come on Maria!
