Starting with day 1 qualies today. Finally saw a player i bet has never been mentioned in these forums. A Sasnovich. She lost unfortunately to Eva Lys. Super super windy when they played. Zero negative vibes from Sas. She crushes flat balls through any wind. Lys too good. Big fan of Sas. Also so Ms one handed backhand herself. Golibic. So cool to see that shot up close. Nai Habino I've always liked. Cute small and a battler. She lost a competitive first set to Sorrobes Tormo in the wind. Great tennis. Ciao till tomorrow.

Didn't go today because of the wind. Apparently yesterday was also bad. Hoping for better tomorrow.

Yup wind and tennis not a great combo. We've all been there. Qualies are cut throat whichbis why i go. Dealing with that wind takes real maturity and professionialism.

Teens news (mostly American)

Penickova got WC Qualies, up against Birell.
Clervie beat Marino, up against Kartal for a main draw spot.
Julieta Pareja has a tough opening round facing Tolmjanovic.
Valerie Glozman against Minnen.
Joint against Zakarova

Andreeva and Jovic in MD.

Since the 2025 junior Girl's AO runner up (Penickova, K) got a WC to qualie, but not Sonobe, I wonder whether Sonobe will gets a WC in the main draw.

Day 2. Early matches were all ATP so i picked a court with back to back ATP one hand backhanders who both lost. Altmaier and Eubanks. Main event was next up Hailey Baptiste vs Shibahara better known for her doubles. Great match. Baptiste first set 6-0 was crazy because points and games were close. 2nd set to Shiba. 3rd to Hailey. She looked and played great. An interesting moment late in the 2nd set. Shiba dropper. Hailey sprints in to counter cross court drop that ticks off the net. Shiba emphatically tells chair to replay the point because Hailey's shoe came off in the back court in her line of vision. There was after a minute or so a video replay in the screen. A first for me. Point was replayed. Incorrectly. All us hackers know u have to stop the point and claim obstruction. U cant obviously wait till after u lose the point. Hailey handled it super well. Kudos to her. She's a fun watch. Behind me at the same time T Townsend waxed Wickmayer who was WC'ed in.

Some (to me) notable players that are out of the qualies: Sara Errani, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Rebecca Marino, Yanina Wickmayer, Laura Siegemund, Nao Hibino, Jodie Burrage, Jil "one l" Teichmann, and Petra Martić.

Jil T. went out to a resurging Dasha (Gavrilova) Saville, one of my favourites. Sorry Sorribes Tormo lost, she's a fighter who's always interesting to watch.

Why does tennis channel think Garcia v Swiatek will be a good match? Garcia hasn't won a thing, or looked convincing, for a year now.

Raducanu v Gauff probably won't be any better. Sure, Gauff is a mess again, but Raducanu is nowhere near her level. Gauff pretty much has a free ride in her section... surprise, surprise.

Why is Siegmund even playing qualifying? Hasn't she had some good results lately? Thought she was ranked higher. Same to a slightly lesser extent to Martic, who doesn't really belong there.

As for Teichmann, I wish she was more consistent with her results, because I'm absolutely in love with her!

... Sorry Sorribes Tormo lost, she's a fighter who's always interesting to watch.
Well, I guess there had to be an SST fan out there somewhere. I mean, there are Zverev fans out there, after all.

Really, I though she was universally disliked for her annoying attitude, painfully slow and unexciting style of play, and her god awful behavior a few years ago in getting her doubles opponents disqualified at a slam for no reason at all.

Good day to be Aussie.

Although no women got direct entry into the draw, we get 4 qualifiers to get in.

Top seeded Kim Birrell.
Tomljanovic got in thanks to a walkover from Somnez.
Maya Joint knocked out Shapovalov's girlfriend Borklund.
Maddison Inglis beat Ito.

Unfortunately Saville couldn't make it 5 and lost to Lourdes Carle.

Well, sometimes I allow myself to be influenced the other way - when I like a player's attitude and demeanor, I root for him/her even if they play predictably w/o imagination.
But somehow I'm able to dissociate personality unpleasantness from a player's ability and watchability. And I enjoy watching good tennis even if it's by a dislikable player (like Kyrgios, etc.)
Short little scrappers like SST, Paolini, Zarazua, Cocciaretto are like motivated, hungry terriers out there, and they give a good effort = a good show.

Wow - #90 Townsend lost to 38yo old timer #120 Varvara Lepchenko 6-2,6-4. Lepchenko is currently the oldest and highest ranked active WTA player.

Day 3 qualies yesterday for me 2 standout matches amongst the ATP getting started. All courts went with alternating WTA with ATP. #1 was the one hand back hand personal fave of mine VGolubic. Great match VG takes down Minnen in 2. Love VG's game and court demeaner. One point ended in a VG back hand ripper down the line which was the shot of the tournament for me so far. #2 WOsuigwe too good for a player I hadn't seen before KJuvan. Also a super good match. Great quality. Great tennis.

So to complete this brief series of "which players that @flyingboris recognizes dropped out of the qualies", we also lost Eva Lys, Taylor Townsend, SST, and Daria Gavrilova Saville.

I didn't know Golubic was a one hander, will check her out. Hopefully she hits her backhands instead of just slicing it 97% of the time.

Isn't she the one who brought down Raducanu badly or Yastremska? I think Sasnovich is her kryptonite
I remember Sasnovich beating Raducanu at IW a few years ago (maybe the year after Raducanu's fluke US Open). At the time, all the British press were doing their usual thing of claiming Sasnovich was highly underrated and actually a really dangerous player... you know, anything to avoid the fact that Raducanu is painfully average at best.

Golubic probably has the best 1HBH on the WTA tour, along with Parry, but the list is short. I mean, they are the only two that come to mind that actually hit topspin 1HBH's at all. Sad days indeed...

I don't like Parry, she is the one who slices 97% of the time. Atleast in the match against Andreeva, she did that and lost. Hopefully Golubic is different.

4 days this yr. Sunday thru today Wed. Grounds pass each day. 4 day total $60. There are 2 tournaments. One is all the household names in the 3 largest courts/venues. The other is my world at tournaments. Outer courts lesser known especially the women. Practically free.
Oh man, that’s awesome. You get to see so many great players that way. I did two days of early rounds at the Miami Open in the final year at Key Biscayne. Great experience. Even saw Cibulkova sniff some (tennis) balls right in front of me.

Damn I love seeing Naomi play. Short takebacks, fast swings, placement with purpose. More of that please, hope she keeps this up.

Hmm. It took Naomi nine minutes to hold. That's not great for someone who used to be known for having a great serve. Commentators suggest that she might be trying to avoid aggravating an ab injury.
