WTA Indian Wells 2025

Why do you guys think Iga gets so many blowout wins but at the same time has trouble closing out tournaments of late?
That's a very good question. There seems to be a pattern, like many here probably guessed/knew. The last 3 losses have been with hard-hitter (flatter hitter) that took time from Iga. In addition to hard-hitters, those players have generally very good defense and can withstand Iga's spin until they see that small window to attack. There are many players who hit hard but their defense and shot tolerance are not there to beat Iga.

Muchova's ball is "too slow" to give Iga any pressure. They bounce higher - perfect for Iga to play her game. Muchova's ball also didn't open the court much. It was Iga who usually pulled her wide to the defense and the next shot is history.

It's just odd. I dont disagree, but it's weird how her game can just destroy some perfectly good players, heck most of them really. She can come out and just plaster top 20 type players. But then wham she runs into one that she has trouble dealing with. There barely seems to be a middle ground.

yeah pegula got lucky with the rain svitolina was about to steamroll pegula in the 3rd set. Pegula not in as good of shape as svitolina obviously

She definitely struggles with the big hitters & big servers on the hard surfaces e.g. Ostapenko, Sabalenka and now Andreeva.

Looking at her losses in the last 12 months it's pretty clear:
Dubai QF to Andreeva
Doha SF to Ostapenko
AO SF to Keys
WTA Finals (one loss to Gauff)
US Open QF to Pegula (this one was an odd one but JPeg was in incredible form that month winning Canada 1000, making the final of Cincy 1000 and then made the USO Final.)
Cincy SF to Sabalenka
Wimbledon 3R to Putintseva (grass but again, tough against a hard hitter like Poots)
Miami 3R to Alexandrova (also an odd one out

Even if you look at the rare times in the last 12 months she went 3 sets (but still won) it's almost always against big hitters:
Noskova in Doha this year. And again we know Noskova took out Iga at the AO last year.
Krejcikova at the WTA Finals last year.
Andreeva at Cincy last year. Also Gracheva but that was a weird match.
Osaka at the French Open last year!!
Haddad Maia in Madrid last year.
Sabalenka in Madrid last year.
Noskova in Miami last year.

Andreeva's in their twice, Noskova thrice, Sabalenka twice and we know Ostapenko has the perfect 5-0 H2H against her.

Svitolina gets it done quickly after the resumption.

6-2 in the 3rd.

Into the QF for just the 2nd time in her career. Previous best was the SF in 2019 otherwise she'd never gone past the 4R.

Easy to forget that Andreeva was the Dubai champ so she's currently on a 9 match winning streak.

Also completely missed that we got a rematch of the Dubai final here in the 3R with Andreeva v Tauson.

Also, Keys on a 14 match winning streak dating back to the Adelaide title and of course Aus Open title.

She missed Doha and Dubai. Tough ask for Vekic.

On paper, keys should win, in straights. I love Keys, I'm happy she got her major. That said...she can become a major error bot because she reverts to her younger days of ball bashing to crack her opponent mentally or to just try and get things over with. That came out a bit against Mertens until she settled down in the 3rd. Vekic is a scrappy player, if Keys slips into that sort of game, I could see an upset. They haven't faced off since like 2019...both are different players now.

I'm looking forward to her vs Svitolina. Svitolina plays a game that can be very grinding and annoying, and she's seasoned. She's also very different from Rybakina. She took out Pegula, herself on a win streak and off a title, so Andreeva would do well to not underestimate her.

I'm kinda looking forward to Gauff vs Bencic round 2 today. Bencic has been phenomenal since becoming a mom and coming back to the tour. Title win, 4th round at the AO, some really solid tennis. Gauff edged her out at the AO in 3 sets. Comparatively, Gauff has had some struggles this year with form and consistency. Can Bencic get the job done this time, or will Gauff put her down again? Either way, Assuming Keys makes the QF thats a tough order for either of them.

Agree to everything but I don't consider Andreeva as a hard hitter.

She's probably the weakest hitter on the list mentioned, alongside possibly Krejcikova who I don't necessarily think of as a big hitter in the same sense as say..Keys or Ostapenko. She still hits pretty solidly I'd say, especially for her age and continued growth.

I almost overlooked the comments on this match, I guess very few people caught it. For those who missed it, Mirra Andreeva beat Elena Rybakina 6-1 6-2. Wowza. Let's hope she stays motivated and healthy for many years to come!
That says more about Rybakina, who has been known to run hot and cold, than it does about Andreeva. That said, Andreeva has a rock solid if unspectacular game, and I do expect her to be a perennial top-10 player.

A massive win for Andreeva! Looks like she is going to stay in the top 10 for longer. Svitolina next - which should be an interesting match too.

Mirra is probably not a typical "hard hitter" like Sabalenka is. I think what makes Andreeva special are: shots redirection, precision, movement/agility, tactical, strategic. Her mental strength and calmness is getting better too. She used to fall apart when she's down on a set. Much tougher competitor now. Hopefully she continues her rise to the top.

Big win for Andreeva, and she is finally starting to realize her considerable potential. I predicted top 10 for her last year, so it took just a few more months, but watching her play you can clearly see such a great foundation to build on.

Comparing her to Gauff, the other player to have some recent success at a relatively young age, her fundamentals are so much better.

Odd for JPeg to not even really compete late.
I don't know, when she loses, it's usually a very unspectacular and limp effort. Sometimes she looks super solid and consistent, while other times she is just lethargic and underpowered. She's one of those players that can look good, and then suddenly throw in a strangely poor performance.

Agree to everything but I don't consider Andreeva as a hard hitter.
She doesn't always hit hard, but power is in her arsenal if she decides to use it.

I was watching, but turned off during one of the rain delays. But Andreeva was looking really good. Hitting her spots and toying with Rybakina a little bit. And Rybakina is still just too inconsistent most of the time.

I didn't see much of Gauff in Australia, and neither of her matches in the middle east, but anyone that thinks her technical issues are fixed is kidding themselves. Her forehand is all over the road. She never hits two balls the same: most are timid and barely going over the net, some are loopy, the occasional shot is harder and more direct, but her feet and body are always doing strange things or off balance.

Strangely, though, it often works in her favor as her opponents struggle to read it and anticipate what is coming.
