Don't know who to root at FO.
Garbine probably, and Bibi is playing I think (Her insta stories seem to show that she's in Paris) and of course my problematic fave Sloane.

Simona is still player to beat in both tournament.

I'd love to see Halep v Azarenka deep in the RG draw. A good run for Simo here then a few matches at RG would set her up nicely to tackle an in form Vika.

I'll be rooting for Garbine and Sloane also, but they're both a bit bonkers form wise so I am just gonna play it cool until one gets to R4 in which case they should be in decent form.

So Osaka has withdrawn today - any news regarding Serena? I'm expecting her to withdraw too unless she's secretly preparing for it. I think she should play presuming she is comfortable travelling and staying on Paris. As eluded to in this forum, RG can be a random QF/SF line-up and I think Serena can take advantage of that if she finds her feet on the red stuff.

Not sure if she'd withdraw. Huge opportunity with big players out like Barty and Osaka and seems certain players who could have been favourites like Bertens, Kenin, Bencic are all in poor form.

Looking at the odds right now it's:

Halep $4.50
Bertens $10
Serena $11
Andreescu $12
Azarenka $13
Muguruza $13
Svitolina $13
Pliskova $17
Kvitova $21
Kenin $21
Keys $23
And then at $26 theres 9 women: Bencic, Gauff, Kerber, Mertens, Rybakina, Sabalenka, Sloane, Swiatek, Vondrousova
Anisimova, Ostapenko and Jonta all on $34

Kuznetsova at $101 is a fun one given her former champ status and being forever dangerous. There's players like Collins, Vekic and Wang with far better odds..

And i'll leave it there.

Are any of the Chinese players entered beside Zhang Shuai? I saw many were withdrawn from Rome also.
Edit: Wiki says Wang Qiang has withdrawn already.

After Konta's results on clay last year she should be higher.
We will know more about form after this week but Svitolina has been consistent in Rome at least in previous years and she made a SF of a slam last year? Was it USO?
It will be interesting to see what Rybakina can do after her solid results earlier in the year. I'm hoping she plays herself back to that form here in Rome. Kuznetsova can be dangerous, you're right, I just hope if she does score some big wins she continues it and doesn't just fall in the next round with a lacklustre performance. She's not won a slam since 2009 so I get she is a former champ but it's been 11 years since.
Not sure how Andreescu has such odds when she's hardly played but hey maybe they reckon she has a knack for rocking up and winning a slam with 0 match play for months before - wait, hasn't it been nearly a year since she played a match? I don't even remember now.
Frankly I'd love to see Serena rock up and win #24 here but I can't say I expect her to. I do think it'd be wise to play though as so many players are erratic right now. If she can drop in the opposite half of the draw to Halep and Azarenka, that'd be a result in itself - I'm pretty excited to see what happens.

Good point, hadn't checked just went off Sportsbet. I'm sure more withdrawals will be coming. In response to your post:

I agree Konta should be higher, despite her breakout 2017, she's still so under the radar. I know she bombed out in the 2R of the USO but that matchup against Cirstea had it's history. On clay last year she was very good. Final in Morocco, Final in Rome (wins over Riske, Sloane, Venus, Vondrousova, and Bertens) and then the RG SF. Hard to ignore her. 3x slam SFist and one of a few on tour to have made a slam QF at all 4 slams.

Svitolina after having that slam SF hoodoo made back to back slam SF's at Wimbledon and the USO last year. She's got a tough 3R match against Kuznetsova which I won't be surprised if she loses or say she's off form because of it.
Rybakina I just know has potential, it'll come eventually but I don't think I could ever predict where it will come. Likely will be hard courts but we'll see.
Agreed on Kuznetsova but we saw her 2017 where she just had the epic year and made the YEC. Not saying she could win a slam but has potential to go deep and I rate her far more than some other names on those odds.
Andreescu I just don't think deserves the odds. Yes she has been amazing with her 2019 but we've barely seen her on clay and haven't seen her at all this year (even before Covid).

It does look like all eyes will be on slam champs and not players eyeing a potential first slam (e.g. Svitolina, Bertens and Pliskova).
All eyes on: Halep, Serena, Andreescu, Kenin, Azarenka and Muguruza. And I guess a very small extent Ostapenko, Kuznetsova and Sloane.

As much as it pains me to say it because she's just so insane,

Yulia Putintseva is making good with her draws.

First the surprise US Open QF and now into Rome 3R where she's playing fellow Kazakh Rybakina and is already up a break..

She's not bad on clay, has made the RG QF's twice in 2016 and 2018.

Halep and also Rybakina were down breaks in the first set and were struggling but both have managed to turn it around and won the first set and have breaks in the 2nd.

So much class from Vika.

This article contains the videos of the injury and the aftermath.

Are they still double partners now, are they on talking terms? I saw the racquet shake afterwards and neither had any warmth expressed towards one another. Only a quick look and racquet touch Kenin saying “good luck” or “good match” and quick walk away, maybe 1 1/2 second moment! Azarenka then burst into wide smiles, hand in the air type celebration.

The Rome QF lineup is really good:

(1) Halep v Putintseva
(SE) Azarenka v (9) Muguruza
(12) Vondrousova v (4) Svitolina
(11) Mertens v (2) Pliskova

2x slam champ Halep vs last weeks USO QFist Poots
USO runner up and 2x slam champ Vika vs 2x slam champ Muguruza
Last years RG runner up Vondrousova vs 2x former Rome champ Svitolina
Last weeks USO QFist Mertens vs former #1 and RG SFist Pliskova

Potential SF's of:
Halep v Azarenka or Muguruza
Svitolina v Pliskova

I mean that's just epic.

Serena would have to be in much better cardio wise to win a FO single title! I think she would have to at least double her stamina level to compete for two weeks straight. Clay is brutal surface that is gear towards moving, running chasing and going back and forth, side to side for one lousy point!

Halep-Svitolina final
Can't decide if I'd prefer Halep v Azarenka or Halep v Mugu in the SF. Mugu is one of my faves so I've gotta root for her but I also really wanna see Halep v current form Azarenka.
I'd like to see Svitolina v Mertens in the bottom half of the draw, with Svitolina hopefully making the final - she has good historic results in Rome.

Mugu through to the semis to face Halep after a 3-6 6-3 6-4 victory over Azarenka.
Azarenka will have a well deserved rest after the past few weeks. She is due to play Strasbourg but I'm not sure if she will or not - could risk premature fatigue for RG, but maybe she will feel she needs a few more clay matches to prep?
