WTA No. 1 Knocked Out By World No. 89 In Fourth Round? Whatever.

Is Ash Barty going to consistently perform like a true top player?

So Ash Barty, reigning French Open champion and world no.1, and the WTA's great hope for consistency, gets knocked out by world No. 55 Riske, who only has two titles and 6 previous wins over top ten players to her name. She has reached the fourth round at a slam only once before. She's a journey woman of no real standing. Is Allivedone Riske an example of the great depth that we're supposed to be in awe of? The closest ATP equivalent would be Joe Kovic been knocked out by No. 55 Norrie.

8 of the last 9 slams have been won by different women, at least three of whom will not win another major.

Yet there is not the slightest element of surprise to Barty's defeat? No thread here.

As Liam Lynch might say: "Whatever!"

What has the WTA come to that's it's pinning its future hopes on teenagers Anisimova and Gauff, and a cricketer who gets schooled by Alison Riske?

Osaka is good but gets crushed first round & third round last two majors. She ain't top class on grass or clay. It wouldn't surprise me if she wins only two more slams in the next ten years.

All the while past-prime Serena consistently trounces a mug field at the age of 37? Only she and the undervalued, hard-working but ultimately second-rate modern day Mary Joe Fernandez in terms of results Simona Halep are consistent competitors. If Serena wasn't there it would be open season and a total crap shoot. Even bloody Konta might win a slam. Thank god Serena continues to save the prestige of slams by crushing low-level social media era mugs.

What happened to the consistent glory days of Henin, Mauresmo, Clijsters, Davenport, Capriati, prime Sharapova, prime Venus, even prime Azarenka and the saucy sexiness and all-court skill of the Italian stallions Pennetta, Vinci, Schiavone and Errani?

If only Camila Giorgi wasn't distracted by her own sexy reflection in court side puddles and wolf-whistles from sexist spectators she would have 10+ slams in this generation of no-hopers.

Disgust.

Man where do you do your research cause this is just bad.

Riske is #55 in the world not #89.

One of those two titles she won came just a few weeks ago, on grass where she beat a top 5 player (Bertens) in the final.

Riske is an excellent grass court player who has the most match wins on the surface in 2019.

This is just embarrassing.

WTA is know for radical upsets all over the place. Ever since Serena’s dominance stopped there hasn’t been a single stable no. 1. Who have we seen? Muguruza, Halep, Wozniacki, list goes on. Osaka reached the pinnacle and just like the aforementioned failed to stay at no. 1 for a considerable amount of time. Barty’s only the latest who’ll end up tumbling. It’s a shame cuz I like her game a lot. I do hope she stays up and it’s only a slight slip up, but who knows. In what universe would we see Djokovic lose to Bedene, when Djokovic is in this kind of form and no. 1 in the world?

Barty loses 4th round at Wimby after winning her first RG. Big deal. (headline worthy but not earth-shattering)
Lots of RG champs go out early at Wimbledon. Muster was a clay beast, made it to #1, and never won a match at Wimbledon.

I just want to say now that all Australian are out, I can finally watch normal centre court matches with my local free to air TV channel in Sydney.

I got the ranking wrong. World number 55 knocks out world no 1. The equivalent of Cameron Norrie knocking out Joe Kovic. It doesn't happen on the ATP.

So what if she beat Bertens? Bertens has done nothing and got kicked out third round at Wimby. She didn't face another seed on the way to that second tier title in the Netherlands either.

Riske has done nothing at Wimbledon so she isn't an 'excellent grass court player.' Natalie Tauziat was an 'excellent grass court player.'
This is just embarrassing.
Exactly. I'm ashamed like you by this whole debacle.

Tsitsipas lost to Fabbiano, Zverev lost to Vesely, Thiem lost to Querrey. All in the 1R.

Ash made it to the 4R. Sure she's the #1 so it looks bad but at least someone born in the 1990s got to #1, on the ATP literally nobody has won a slam or made #1 born in the 1990's so you can't even compare the two. The only comparison is to the top 5 players that are born in the 90s and they all lost in the 1R.

Vesely was ranked far lower than Riske was. Fabbiano also was ranked far lower than Tsitsipas.

Querrey didn't win a title coming into Wimbledon, neither did Fabbiano, neither did Vesely. Riske did though, that's why it's relevant.

Riske won a mickey mouse tournament where Bertens, who has done very little in slams, was top seed. Watch Serena destroy Riske the way it should be done-hopefully! Enough with no-name mugs reaching quarter-finals of slams.

The reason mug men born in the nineties can't break through is because Fed, Nadal, Joe Kovic and Murray are/were four Serenas- holding the fort making sure that the slams remain prestigious for the chosen ones. Imagine if clowns like Raonic were picking up the hallowed silverware.

What we need on the WTA is three or four Serenas, not the female versions of young, raw, unpolished, ATP second-raters Zverev and Tsitsipas winning slams and getting the coveted number one spot before they're ready and able to run with the ball and carry the torch.

If Serena or Halep don't win this tournament then it will be a complete disaster if Svitolina doesn't. Even then it will a crying shame. Quality needs to rise to the top for the WTA to be a credible brand and for the integrity of the sport to be preserved.

If only Francesca Schiavone were here to kick some serious ass.

(Please can a Mod change the title to World No. 55 so it's less embarrassing for the WTA)

Although her personality has been described as "weird, Osaka deserves respect for being the last female tennis player in a long time to win a pair of consecutive majors, something that is unusual in the WTA circuit.
Barty's thing is not surprising, especially when it comes to a first-time winner.
She is adapting to her new status.
Let's give her time!

Riske played the match of her life. She couldn’t miss a ball and was painting lines left and right in set 2 and 3, while Ash couldn’t find her first serve and her slices deserted her as well. Just not herself yesterday. She was on a 15 match winning streak, maybe the pressure and attention did get to her. I’m sure she will bounce back and win more big titles in the next few months and beyond.

I hope Riske backs up the win and take out Serena. Boy she looks so slow and clumsy out there. Surely she’s very beatable??

It's a strange dynamic as the men's game is currently berated because no one can beat the top ranked players. Yet the women's game is slammed because the top ranked players are getting beaten.

Of course there is a different standard of top player between the two. What's happening in the women's game is a inconsistency of quality. It isn't deemed exciting because there isn't a true elite four or five players setting the standard for others to follow. It's literal musical chairs at the #1 ranking right now. They have initial success but can't sustain it for some reason. It's why Serena is able to have extended breaks from the game and still reach slam semis or finals without much preparation into her comeback.

How many times do I have to tell you that winning the French Open is completely worthless

How many times
No matter how often you say it, it doesn't make it correct. You sound like you're a fan of players who have absolutely no clay court game whatsoever. Why else are you so salty about RG? It's the hardest slam to win as the serve is neutered and you have to grind all day. Guys with no substance who are all flash get completely shown up at RG.

wta players don't seem to adapt.. always stick to there playstyle until the end even if it means they lose.

also perhaps barty just wanted to avoid serena as people will be like "well that decides it.. serena is the true #1" (if serena won)
