WTA Pre-AO General Discussion (Brisbane/Aukland/Shenzhen/Sydney/Hobart)

Ana won a title. Nice surprise. :)

Hope it will be a good confidence booster for her and preview of a good AO run. She does need that indeed.

I thought you might be interested, Chico, that the announcers said she is now working with an all Serbian team, and she says she feels much more comfortable (or maybe it was "relaxed"? Either way, she's happy, is the main point).

Didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
I hope she can make a deep run at slam finally.

What happened? I didn't hear about it. Why would she change a winning formula?

Halep had Adrian Marcu, a former Davis Cupper for Romania, coach her from March of last year to Sofia, when she parted ways with him, after amazing success last year.

Perhaps he asked for more money, not sure.

Anyway, the worst timing for changing a coach indeed.

And neither of them have shown up with someone new, so it's not like one of them was upgrading. It really makes you wonder what they were thinking!

At last--proof you only hear what you want to hear. Her 2013 press conferences were littered with her venom toward Serena. Go to youtube, or anywhere else, and drop the selective hearing bit.
Like what, the pre-Wimbledon thing? Those are just facts,Serena barged in like the clumsy oaf she is and shacked up with a married man with kids. How does that look for a Jehovah's Witness? I know of JWs who have been kicked out of their church for stuff like that. She criticized Serena for her foolish and immature comments on that **** situation, more than justified.

I came home last night and caught the last half of the Aukland final. Both players are looking good! Btw, the women who did the announcing on this one (I think an Aussie and a Kiwi) kinda cracked me up. It was like being in their living room...

Venus making me remember why she's so awesome. Her good is scary good and I love her at the net.....it's so strange that Serena ended up with more slams than her. She probably had sjogren's for years. And Richard always said Serena would be better because she's a pitbull (maybe it's that extra but of attitude that carries Serena through). Anyway, she looks so much better than this time last year. You can feel it's not easy for her, but she doesn't move like Granny Williams anymore.

Ivanovic showing that anorexics can also come back and win. Just kidding. She played well and those leg kick/fist pump combos always give me a good laugh. It's great to see her finding her form again. Hopefully she'll keep it up.

I read so many good things about the Aga/Cornet hopman cup final that I set it up to record this afternoon. Looking forward to that...

That aga/cornet final was freaking awesome. Both ladies were incredible.

interesting...

i didn't think Venus played that well overall. she showed glimpses of her amazing offense from back in the day, but her defense was dismal. thats sadly to be expected given her current condition dealing with a potentially debilitating disease. i also agree with you thats she's probably had this condition for years, which in my mind helps explain her unexplainable lapses in form in her career; where she would go from literally the most dangerous, explosive, and fastest female player i've ever seen to merely mediocre looking!

Ivanovic was hitting the ball much earlier than i remember from the past, but her service toss is still very shaky...

saw the Li/Peng final. i love the way Peng hits the ball! so strong, flat, penetrating, and accurate when she's in position! only problem is, she's not in good position all that often due to her lack of movement and leverage (using two hands on both sides).

WTH is going on in Hobart? Just saw mlandovic has 10 aces (and counting) on Stosur. When did she become an ace machine?

Edit: Sam actually wins again down under! KM ended up with 11 aces, but still managed to lose in 3rd set tie break.

I'm afraid to say it but Petra has been playing so well in Sydney. She absolutely demolished Christina McHale and played a great match against Safarova. She is serving well and looks confident on the court. Is she regaining the form that saw her win Wimbledon? I certainly hope so. Her game is spectacular to watch when on.

Well Mladenovic is one of the few women who already hit a serve over 200+kph. As far as Stosur goes I hope she does well in this tourney: her form at Hopman Cup was atrocious. And that's an understatement.I guess they are my two favourites headcases right know. It's like enjoying pouring lemon in a wound.

Well, guess who lost yesterday? Straight set defeat against Klara Zakopalova. In the other SF, it was a duel of qualifiers...

Lol! And Kvitty lost to Pironkova! We try not to be skeptical and discuss these things outside the WWWH thread, and look what happens! :) Of course, I didn't get a chance to see either match...could be legit wins by challengers and not choke jobs, but that's not what history would suggest.

I was almost going to post something yesterday about a Kvitova/Kerber rematch and potential rivalry, but something told me not to. Hopefully Angie can hang tough and grab her first title of the year. In Hobart, it would be pretty exciting if the young gun, Muguruza, took the title.

Very happy for Pironkova. First final (had been something like 0-7 in semis!), first title, three top 10 wins in a row. All as a qualifier this week.

Hopefully she can build on this, become more than just the occasional giant killer, develop regular results and get into the top 20.

Basic rule of WTA - always cheer for the hotties because the more they win the more we see them!
