anyway, i hope jj will win this tournament. it would be sad to beat both williams sisters on consecutive days and not winning the tournament.

Beating Venus on clay is nothing these days. It is no bigger a win than say beating Sharapova on clay right now. Beating Serena on clay is a good win but not remarkable, it is not like you are beating the player to beat on clay (and I am a Serena fan). I wouldnt see how it would be any shame to not win an event after beating Venus and Serena both on clay. It is not like she just beat Henin on clay or something.

yeah but serena is such an intense competitor. even a win on clay against her took some doing :)

“To beat both Williams sisters in two days is really amazing,” Jankovic said.
“I’m really proud of myself. It doesn’t happy too often.”

I actually hope Jose Martinez Sanchez wins. She has played a refreshing style of game for clay and it would be nice to see it pay off in a title. If both play exactly as they did today Jose Martinez Sanchez should have no problem as well, but JJ could well play better in the final.

It doesnt happen often since the Williams rarely both get far enough on clay to afford the better clay courters the opportunity to do so.

Like all the American players, the WS are not built to play on clay. It's like comparing the US soccer team to Europe. No contest.

The Williams sisters in their clay court primes were better clay courters than anyone today apart from Henin and possibly Clijsters and Kuznetsova. They are past their primes on the surface, especialy Venus, but it doesnt mean they were never excellent on clay. Venus won many tier 1 and tier 2 events on clay and it was a shame she didnt do better at the French, but still made a final there. She just destroyed Mary Pierce a few times on the surface, and Pierce is a French Open champion, 3 time French Open finalist, and one of the top clay courters of the 90s. Serena in her prime won a French Open then was cheated out of a possible 2nd one by a cheating Justine Henin Hardenne. When they were in their primes the clay court competition was alot tougher than today as well. If they were playing at their former levels on clay both would do even better vs todays weak clay court field. Heck Henin is only back to 60% of her old level at this point and she is still almost a lock to win the French this year.

Martinez Sanchez really should win this match. JJ barely beating Serena on clay, not exactly impressive stuff. Martinez Sanchez has been playing great all week so this is her match to win or lose really. Plus she has great name genes for great clay courters, LOL!

Ugh what an ugly choke from Martinez Sanchez. All she had to do was keep playing the same tennis she played all week and she had this in the bag. Come on MS, wake up again!

100 dollars says JJ talks about that call at 5-6 in the TB in her press conference. It did kind of suck for her though.

I knew Martinez was hot, but she's taking JJ out of her game & can compete when she stays back.

Very interesting developments here.

Martinez kicking some butt again.

Also, what a babe.

Martinez Sanchez got over that bad patch and is now back to playing the kind of tennis she has played all week. Good to see. This match is really all dependent on her it seems. Jankovic is just a passenger.

That's what it seems like. Can she bring this to Madrid?

There was an amazing point in the tiebreak when MJMS directed the ball wide with a forehand slice to finish it with a volley. Almost Santoro-like.

This is ridiculous. JJ is even worse than yesterday. There is no way she can even come close to winning a slam if she plays like that. Henin would have double bageled her in Stuttgart if she played this poorly against her. Literally giving the match away.

JJ like most of the WTA players is in trouble when doesn't get flat balls with good pace to the baseline. They are clueless around the net or with slow balls with spin.

Press Conference:

It will go something like this:

“To beat both Serbian queens in two days is really amazing,” Martinez Sanchez said. “I’m really proud of myself. It doesn’t happy too often.”
