Star studded draw as usual, but last year all top seeds were falling fast! Will this year be the same?

Garcia is defending champ, Halep is first seed.

Draw Dubs: http://wtafiles.wtatennis.com/pdf/draws/2018/1075/MDD.pdf
Draw Tashkent: http://wtafiles.wtatennis.com/pdf/draws/2018/825/MDS.pdf

Tashkent has Kostyuk and Danilovic to make the draw interesting.

Once again we are one match away from
GARCIA vs MLADENOVIC
In 3 previous chances, Mladenovic always lost to prevent this happen.

*Poll written before the result of Osaka vs Pliskova.

And now Penko loses in her very first match in Wuhan. Reading the WTA reports about her matches is verging on the annoyingly repetitive: blah blah unreliable serve, blah blah, double fault, blah blah multiple unforced errors, blah blah lost her serve games and breaks...

She has the potential, but without realising where her weaknesses are (and they are so blatant...) and working to improve them, she will only have the potential and nothing else. Right now, the only impressive thing about her is how many ranking points she's losing in a short period of time.

Has Ostapenko applied for a Finnish passport?
I'll never understand the split from her former coach.
Either from her perspective or the coach's.
They could've gone places.

Excited to watch this tournament, especially as I am of course supporting my fellow Dutchy Bertens (aka 'the real Kiki').

Bertens has a reasonable shot at making the WTA finals even though Pliskova winning this past weekend and having a 1st-round bye in Wuhan really hurt her chances. Nonetheless, Mertens losing has created some breathing room behind her, which makes it unlikely for Bertens to finish any lower than #9 in the race.

Apart from the WTA Race, Bertens has a great shot at passing several players above her in the WTA ranking itself next few weeks, such as Garcia, Gorges, and Pliskova, since all of them have decent points to defend, whereas Bertens has almost none.

If Bertens makes the WTA finals, she could also potentially pass Stephens, Svitolina, or even Wozniacki (!).

Anyway, she should at least be in the top-10 for the first time a couple of weeks from now :)

Also, can we just use Kiki for Bertens from now on? It's her factual first name after all....plus she is currently a much better player in singles than Mladenovic.

Given Mladenovic' year perhaps a better nickname for her would be 'Malady'?

Can’t believe I’m asking this but does anyone think Bertens could nab a slam in the near future? Her form of late has been pretty damn good, two titles in 3 tournaments. Former slam SFist. Could it be possible?

Also did everyone see this? A few WTA players like Halep, García, Petra, Keys and Woz have responded to the Serena US Open drama.

Serena Williams' claims of sexism after her US Open final defeat by Naomi Osaka earlier this month have divided opinion on the women's WTA Tour.

World No 1 Simona Halep and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova told CNN Sport they have seen no difference in the way male umpires treat players, irrespective of their gender.

But Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki believes her long-time friend "has a point."

Japan's Osaka won the September 8 final 6-2, 6-4 after a match which saw Williams warned for coaching, penalized a point for smashing her racket and then docked a game for an outburst in which she called the umpire, Carlos Ramos, a "thief" and a "liar."

The American, who told Ramos she "never cheated" and "would rather lose" than be coached, later accused the Portuguese of sexism, saying several male players had behaved and said much worse but not been punished as harshly.

However, Halep came to the defense of Ramos, saying he had acted correctly.
"The rules are the rules," Halep, this year's French Open winner, told CNN Sport in an interview in Wuhan, China. "I don't see any difference between the men's rules and women's rules, and I think the chair umpires are doing just their jobs."

As for Ramos, Halep said: "I never had any problems with him, or with any umpire. I also got fines, when I had to. It's normal."

Kvitova and French No. 1 Caroline Garcia also told CNN Sport they had not experienced any differential treatment.

"I don't see the difference, to be honest," said Kvitova, who was surprised someone as experienced as Williams had reacted so strongly to the coaching violation.

"Sometimes, when you get the violation, it is just a violation, and it is nothing, at the end of the day," said the fifth-ranked Czech. "I got so many violations when I was a kid, I got a coaching violation as well, but it's OK.
"You get it, and you can't do anything with it, and sometimes it's tough, but you can't get interrupted by that."

Garcia, the French No 1, agreed. "I think umpires treat women and men the same way, from my own experience. I think if a player got angry and reacted like she did in the final, they would get the same penalty, I am pretty sure."

World No 2 Wozniacki said she understood where Williams, a long-time friend, was coming from.

"I think she has a point in some of what she's saying," Wozniacki told reporters in Wuhan. "I think everyone has the right to their own opinion.

"I think that when you're going into a grand slam final, you're fighting for your 24th slam, you're fighting to be on paper, the best player to ever have played the game ... there will be emotions involved. I think there will be some feelings there when you go onto the court."

And Wozniacki said she felt Ramos should have shown more consideration for the situation.
"If someone knows Serena, if someone has followed her career, she never gets coaching, and she never asks for the coach on court," said the Dane.

"I think as a great umpire -- you obviously have to be a good umpire to be in the finals -- you should also be aware that this is the situation. You should be aware that Serena is not one of those people that really looks up to the box or communicates with the box.

"In my opinion I think that in the situation he probably should have given her a soft warning, and if he felt this is the way it was, said that your team is making signs, you need to make them stop. That's, in my opinion, the way that the umpires usually do it."

Wozniacki also said the rules should be tightened up to reduce the room for controversy.

"I think there should be some strict rules," she said. "I think those rules are kind of a gray zone. I think every match should be the same.
"If you were to be strict ... then you should have taken both players and the coaches before the match and said, Hey, I'm really strict today. I tolerate nothing. It's the way it is. That's also OK."

Former US Open finalist Madison Keys said she believed Williams "felt like (it was) a very personal attack."

And the American said she felt the tennis authorities needed to learn from the incident.
"We can maybe look at past things and see how other situations were handled, specifically in the US Open, which kind of raises some eyebrows," Keys said.

"I think overall it was just a really unfortunate experience. I think we should probably look at it more closely and see if there is a bigger issue. If there is, it's something that needs to be addressed."

Everyone agreed, though, that the incident had spoiled Osaka's joy at becoming a grand slam champion, especially when the crowd began booing (toward officials) during the trophy ceremony.

"It's been a bit sad for Naomi actually," Kvitova said. "She played great, and unfortunately the crowd just didn't give her the best of what she deserved."

Keys also said Osaka deserved better.
"The first words out of her mouth after she won her first Grand Slam were, I'm sorry. I felt so bad. I mean, it was just really sad watching it all unfold."

She snatch RG first as a clay specialist, I am glad that this season she worked hard to get results on others as well including first titles.

I do. And with the way she moves and plays, that's why I put her on Serena's clan in the MC Cup (incidentally, 7 vs 7 would work, MC Cup or whatever you want to call it will work much better than LC, with the depth and quality of WTA players). Bertens is flying way under the radar with all the attention going to Osaka, Serena lately. But Bertens has had a solid and consistent year with 3 WTA (P, P5, MM) and the epic Madrid PM final losing narrowly to Kvitova. Her win loss is about the same as Osaka but ranked just outside top 10. BUT - her win loss record vs top 5, top 10 is way way better than Osaka, according to TA. This is something I've said Osaka needs to pay attention to, her record vs top players is actually very poor, poorer than average. Bertens can make a major final. Anybody from 11-30 can make a sudden break through because their level is all so high. I think Osaka may have a big dip if she doesn't keep improving with everybody chasing the top 10 so hard.

That is the thing Serena should be worrying about and why I wanted her to reflect on and take the right action, whilst she has gone the opposite way.

In principle, I am against arguing with umpires like McEnroe or Serena etc. Appeal on a point of tennis law or not. But you can't argue with or worse accuse the judge. You have to trust the umpire is doing the right thing to the best of his/her professional ability overall. Pete's conduct on court was, I think, the best. As good as Edberg. Pete of course modelled himself after the 60's Australian greats like Rosewall or Laver. Those guys never argued with the umpire. They were taught by Hopman after all. Respect for authority was taught to small boys in those days.

All along, Serena, imo, had been overwhelmingly on the right side of history. Even injustices like 2001 or 2004 etc were very minor compared to the whole course of history. You can't put yourself against history.

I recall you posted her behaviour was awful, a disgrace. I had been watching the reaction of Serena supporters on the other forum too, the decent ones generally think the same. The kind of support she got immediately after the USO incident was the wrong kind of support, capricious, unreliable, and from the wrong quarters. She cannot afford to lose grass roots support from her real base.

The next slam poll could have a slot for Bertens, though it is difficult to decide who to leave out these days. A happy problem.

Actually for slams, I think we can have two polls in the future. One for contenders, one for dark horses. So we don't have to pick "other". Just no overlap.

What an effort from Kiki Bertens:

- Wins Seoul on Sunday afternoon.
- Lands in Wuhan at 3:15pm today.
- Match vs. Bencic began at 7:30pm.
- Rain delays interrupt match.
- Wins 63 46 62 in 2h23m at 11:55pm.

She’ll be back on court in 13 hours to play Pavlyuchenkova. #WuhanOpen

(Her match is about 2 hours away now but that’s amazing)

Since the weight loss she is playing Meh tennis

Not surprise sabalenka defeated her, hardhitters is her kryptonite

I saw when she started to lose weight but now its like gone a bit too far. She actually looks unhealthy now, kinda like Djokovic.

You can lose 8 more points, period. Don’t quit with that scoreline.

Zheng takes the first over Barty because TTW SDL said so.

I don't agree on the hard-hitters but for certain Svitolina has lost her way, having said that she played better today first 2 sets but her serve let her down in the key period at the end of the first set and that in the end was costly.

Williams on the right side of history is an amazing statement. The majority certainly outside America see her as an odious character and as credible as the average Cyclist. Her performance at the US Open was her up and dressed, no more needs saying but the way the Tennis authorities have indulged her yet again is a complete disgrace. The whole integrity of the Sport has been put under question. Women's Tennis is better when she isn't there, no question about that.

What the WTA should do right now is ensure that if Williams can't support any of the Asian tour events she shouldn't be allowed to compete in Australia in January. Will they have the backbone to do that not a chance. Guaranteed Williams TUE approved will turn up in Australia even bigger and stronger than ever, with the seedings again gerrymandered in her favour. All very unsavoury and easily avoided.

Can't catch a decent stream for the life of me.

Pliskova and Bertens out, but I'm guessing all the matches they already played and all the travelling left both out of sorts.

I believe she can, especially at RG. She's a damn fine and reliable clay courter and the depth of good clay courters at this moment is very shallow.

Is it safe to say Bencic didn't live up to her potential?

Bencic and Konjuh had so many injuries it's annoying.

It pains my heart, but I don't think she has and I'm not sure she will ever live up to it. Her injuries derailed her progression and now there are several promising girls making inroads to make it even harder... But she's still young and if Kerber was a late blommer, why can't she also be one?

Wang Qiang also win a title last week plus play 2 weeks ago and reach SF at Hiroshima.
Pliskova can't use that excuse for her lost to Wang. Wang play great since she won Asian Games gold.

In other news, 17 yo Wang Xiyu lost in a clutch battle against Kasatkina. She's leading on that tiebreaker.
Typical juniors choke?
