Pliskova & Bertens will fight for the last ticket for the finals

Looks like it, yeah.
Kiki losing is not a big surprise after 7 matches in 7 days including the crazy traveling/playing yesterday. Luckily for her Pliskova also lost. Shame for Pliskova, she had a huge advantage over Bertens (i terms of WTA finals) with her bye in the 1st round as the #8 seed, especially given the fact she also won her tourney Sunday.

Since Keys and Gorges also lost, it seems only Kasatkina has an outside chance of overtaking Pliskova/Bertens, but she would have to win the tournament and then perform better than the others in Beijing. Muguruza seems too far away, she would have to win both tournaments I think.

Can’t believe I’m asking this but does anyone think Bertens could nab a slam in the near future? Her form of late has been pretty damn good, two titles in 3 tournaments. Former slam SFist. Could it be possible?

I don't know. I would love to see her do it but I don't think she's quite there yet. She has made great strides this year, both in her physical regimen and mentally, which has been paying off.
I think now for Kiki it'll be a case of whether she can continue her good play the next season. If so, she could be a contender for the FO especially. Personally I think she needs another solid year in 2019 (similar to 2018) before she could really be able to challenge in 2020 though.

That said, it's always possible of course in 2019 :)

After 3 days there are 3 top 10 players left

Hm, looking at the field, Muguruza may have a decent shot at the title, which would place her within earshot of Pliskova and Bertens...Muguruza seems to have the best draw now. Kvitova still seems a better candidate for the title IMO, which would be good for Bertens if that happens.

Nick Saviano now working with Svitolina til the end of the year.

Some may remember him successfully coaching Eugenie Bouchard through her career and incredible 2014. He also coached Sloane Stephens for most of her career up until 2015.

I know we keep saying it but Svitolina is just looking way too thin, it’s concerning. There’s an Ivanovic level of skinny and then there’s Svitolina who needs some weight ASAP.

Halep can’t serve out the second set and she loses in straights to Domi.

6-0 7-5.

Another failed tournament by Halep but in a way it's better to exit early than make Final and lose it.
I hope she will regroup for Beijing and maybe win it this time around.

Mugu just lacks confidence these days, no one fears her court presence. Kerber looked good today, even if it was against her pigeon and an injured Keys.

Halep with 3 consecutive losses for the first time in 12 months. Funnily enough, all 3 losses occurred at the exact same tournaments as last year

2017: Cincy Final (lost to Muguruza), USO R1 (lost to Sharapova), Wuhan R1 (lost to Kasatkina).

2018: Cincy Final (lost to Bertens), USO R1 (lost to Kanepi), Wuhan R2 (lost to Cibulkova).

Also, unsurprisingly Serena Williams has withdrawn from Beijing and has seemingly called it a year. I mean she could play in the Fed Cup final but who knows.

Played 7 tournaments after her comeback from pregnancy, two slam finals, no titles. Not bad.

Bertens has a full schedule. Seoul - Wuhan - Beijing - Linz - Moskow.
She want that WTA final so bad!
Do you guys know when the player submit their name into the tournament?

Sloane only play Beijing next
Pliskova play Moskow
Svitolina play Hongkong

Those 4 are fighting for 3 spots in WTA final that are realistically still open.
Garbine could win Wuhan and Beijing tho (Or ala her run on 2015 where she RU in Wuhan and Win in Beijing I think).

My wish is Sloane, Bertens and Muguruza.

Now if she follows the pattern, she should play the final in Beijing and maybe break the symmetry at that point and win it.

Kerber can’t convert two break points to then go up a break and serve for the set, Barty holds her serve and then breaks Kerber to take the first 7-5.

Ash has such a brutal draw considering she made the final last year so she has a lot of points to defend.

Barty gets it done in style and knocks Kerber out 7-5 6-1. Another top 10 player out of the tournament.

Last years finalist back in the QF’s, next has Kvitová or Pavlyuchenkova.

Wozniacki the only slam champ this year left in the draw with Halep and Kerber both losing and Osaka withdrawing. Only other slam champs left are Garbie and Kvitová.

Another tournament of upsets continue.

Potapova avenging her loss to Danilovic in Tashkent. But for it to be truly meaningful, she would've to win the whole thing. Not impossible considering the field, but still a long way ahead.

From 6 teenagers that compete on Tashkent, 3 make it into QF

Lapko, 2nd seed will face Barthel (She's almost 20 tho)
Potapova (17) vs Jakupovic
Stollar (19) vs Gasparyan the One handed backhand.

Today we witness WTA 1HBH match between Maria and Gasparyan.

Muguruza can play very beautiful time to time. But could just collapse like that from 5-1 and lost 6-7.
A really rare nice exchange between Sumyk and Muguruza at 2nd set.

No top 10 players left. Only slam champ left is Muguruza who’s down a set to Siniaková.

No other player in the draw has a Premier 5/Mandatory title. Puig has Olympic Gold and Domi has the YEC of course though.

Huge chance for someone. Hope it’s Barty.

Has been a baaaad trend this year. Commanding positions in sets/matches and she gives them up.

Poor start to breaker now too...

Many upsets in WTA - as usual. Don't mind it at all. That's what makes it interesting to me. Of course I wouldn't mind if my fav players win.

Speaking of new coach ... rocky start with Svitolina's new coach.

Sumyk was alright.
She need a mental coach/Service coach. How unreliable her serve is to close things out.

Mental coach probably yes. I still think Sumyk needs to go.

I don't think there are that many issues with the serve. She should probably get more pace on it, but I don't think it would make a huge difference. I'm not sure about a service coach either. I have not followed WTA closely enough, but I can't recall any player making significant improvements to the serve as career has gone on. I know players like Dementieva have tried, but results were relatively minor I guess. Serve seems to be a skill that the girls either have or they don't.

I've been watching various match highlights and am absolutely perplexed as to how Wuhan makes any money? I've only seen one match with a half decent crowd.

At #16, Barty is the only seed left.
I to hope she wins.

If she qualifies, will she have enough energy to face the 8 others? Maybe she can take her chances, they all seems exhausted, extremely injured, suffering from mental blocks in any case.

I am hopeful she will not play Linz myself, depending on how Beijing goes of course.
Hopefully she'll go far in Beijing to almost secure the WTA finals, after which she could just play Moscow to get some extra points.

It’s absurd really. They give all these tournaments to Chins on both tours and the attendance sucks!

This is a relatively new tournament but as far as I can remember it was always empty stands. May be one of the reasons all top players are bailing out early.

Yes, Sabalenka will likely take this whole thing, if not, then Beijing PM.

Sabalenka's strong, her record vs top 10
