First and only stop on the WTA which is an indoor clay event (though Madrid can become indoors).

So far Bartoli is through to play Ivanovic/Barthel winner.

Stosur through to play 'NoCarbs' A-Pav or defending champ Goerges.

Who's gonna make their statement of intent for the RG title?

Defending champ Goerges drops the first set to a slumping A-Pav 7-5. Dropping 470 points will be a hammer blow to her Olympics goal.

Radwanska first through to the QF, beating Arn 3 & 4.

Goes on to play (most likely) Li.

Ivanovic loses 75 76 to Barthel, Barthel goes on to play Bartoli R2.

Tough opener for Ana really who has been on form lately, and no doubt had crowd support.

JJ/Wozniacki and Cornet/Sharapova also scheduled for today.

Dont think I've seen Cornet play since last year sometime when her mobile started ringing on MP against Wozniacki somewhere.

It's a shame that there are almost no top level natural clay courters on the women's side (with the exception of Schiavone). In the recent past we enjoyed players like Henin, Mauresmo, Svetlana (who's in a major slump), Conchita, Sanchez Vicario thrive during the red clay season. These days we have bashers who play on the clay as if its a hard court. So boring.

I agree, the RG field is wide open. anyone in the Top20 could win the title there imo.
There are no real CC specialists out there, which is why Schiavone and Li Na were able to sneak out a win at RG.
Still I think azarenka will take RG, she's smoking this year, and full of confidence.

Mona Barthel will be a very good test for her

Li/Aggie 2-2 in the first set after exchanging breaks.

When Li is goating, like when she had to break back, Aggie gets blown clean away, she doesn't have Li's guns. But when Li is mugging, she keeps tripping over herself and misfiring badly...

Li was up love 30 on Aggie's serve then gives it away. Then down love 40 on her own serve with a bunch of errors and comes bashing back to win the next five points in a row to hold serve.

2 bp to Li for a 5-3 lead. And breaks. Li to serve for opening set.

1st set 6-3 Li Na. IF Li isn't goofing up, I can say that Radwanska gets well and truly hit off the court out there.

12/14 vs 6-10 win/ufe, Li/Aggie. Once in a while, Aggie goes for a super big return trying to break the pattern of being overpowered by Li. It's not a bad match so far. 0-40 3bp to Li.

Aggie up 5-3 in the second after Li's errors pile up. But it is important for Li to hold here and not tank so she gets to serve first in the third. 6-2 set 2 to Aggie.

Li's ball has lost quite a bit of punch and making lots of mistakes, she had barely 1 winner? in the second set while Aggie is keeping her level constant. Should win in the third.

Li is mugging badly now, errors flying left and right against somebody who makes almost no errors. Needs to get those winners flowing again. Aggie 3-1 up but it's either all Li or all Li, either way.

Aggie wins 6-3 in the third.

3-3 in the first set between Barthel and Azarenka. Neither side respecting the other's serving with 4 breaks already.

Barthel to serve.

I suspect yet another Azarenka-Radwanska encounter next round. Barthel's DFing like she's Sharapova or Pavlyuchenkova.

Three QFs played and all of them going 3 sets. Sharapova just sent her match with Stosur to a 3rd set.

I wonder when Kvitova-Kerber match will begin. LOL

Same Chokestur even choking away a match vs Sharapova on CLAY. Pathetic.

This Stuttgart tournament has had the BEST matches of 2012 on the WTA side. Really great tournament. Do we all see what happens when the top players converge at the same (non-GS) tournament and actually PLAY WELL at the same time? Magical!!

Incredible day for the WTA.

The tour needs more indoor tournaments!

AWESOME SF's lineup set up for tomorrow!

KvittyGOAT vs Sharapova, and Azarenka vs Radwanska.

WTA is mirroring the ATP in this tourney with all Top 4 seeds reaching the SF's. Now I'm hoping for a Kvitty vs Vika final, with Kvitty winning!!

And I am hoping for Miami repeat, getting tired of shrieks from Azarenka
I know that was a great QF match, but there so much shrieking I can handle, even 'pova seem very quiet in comparison

Just out of curiosity, what do you folks think, would that 1 extra hour Azarenka played may be a factor tomorrow?

Her tongue wagging and stellar start to the season should intimidate her next opponents. The one hour won't make a difference.

Plus she can move the ball better than some of her colleagues side to side. I think her opponent will get tired faster than Azarenka getting to the point of being broken down.

That's why I prefer WTA over ATP lately.

Aza leads Aga by 1 set to love 6-1 after 24 minutes. Radwanska's getting blown away.

That was a cold cold handshake. Shivers

Aga needs to develop some weapon to deal with those of Azarenkas and Kvitovas

Up until this year it was only 5-3 Azarenka in the H2H. Now it's 10-3. Radwanska can beat heavy hitters like Bartoli, Li, Goerges, and Sharapova, but has no answer for Azarenka. She's beaten pushers like Jankovic, Zvonareva, and Wozniacki as well.

Radwanska really needs to beef up the 2nd serve. Her defense, as solid as it is, can only do so much against hitters in the zone. She doesn't intimidate folks, but she knows when to force the issue during the points.

Sharapova serving for first set against Kvitova. Kvitova's hit her past FIVE returns long. She just cannot find her length. Everything going for broke and gifting it to Maria.

6-4 first set to Maria.

Sam Smith keeps pronouncing it "Kivitova" when it should be "Kwitova".

Kvitova is such an enigma. Every shot is full throttle. Girl needs to upgrade her tennis IQ.

If youre watching Eurosport its Jo Durie today not Sam Smith.

I don't see Kvitova winning this. Her one moment of lulling cost her in the 1st set. Sharapova's 2nd serve is powerful. Now Kvitova failed to convert 2 break points in the 2nd. 1-1.

I dunno, she's looking a lot better now herself - more consistent.

I dont think though I've seen Sharapova's serve this solid since AO08, and her game in general too. She has imporved a lot from last year.

If the match is a Azapova final, I expect Maria to be a lot more competitive than she has been recently.

Sharapova's saved 2bp in all three service games in this set 6 for 0 by some clutch serving. 3-3.

Kvitova's either blasting Maria off the court - or blasting herself off the court.

Sharapova saves bp #8. She's going to keep saving bps until Kvitova lapses on her own serve again.

Kvitova had setpoint on her 8th? or 9th? bp then just goes all nitro and blasts it wide.

5-5. Sharapova's clutch has been extraordinary under such crazy pressure.

Another BP for Sharapova...DEUCE with a nice serve down the T.

Kvitova needs to hire Stosur's sports psychologist. Sharapova breaks for 6-5.
