So...in order to pass Ivanovic...

Jankovic and Serena have to make it to the semis..while Safina and Dementieva need to reach the finals.

That means Ivanovic secures No. 3 ranking.

The WTA is weaksauce, but it would be sweet if little sis Safina can be numero uno at the end of the great fort knight,

Ivanovic can go as low as #5 if Safina beats Serena and Dementieva defeats Jankovic in the semis.

Ivanovic's lead over Jankovic is becoming more and more razor thin.

It's crazy considering Ivanovic could still keep #1 despite being arguably the worst #1 ever. Losing early in slams to people ranked #133 and #188. Ridiculous.

I sense Jankovic's grinding is going to catch up to her real fast. Serena, Safina, and Dementieva look good so far. One of those three will likely claim #1, barring any upsets.

I expect the rankings to be after USO 08:
1. Safina
2. Dementieva
3. Jankovic
4. S Williams

I expect Dinara to beat Elena in the final with Jelena & Serena in the semis.

Now that I have no idea of:
5. Ivanovic
6. Sharapova
7. Kuznetsova
8. V Williams

What about 9 & 10:
9. Radwanska
10. Zvonareva

Safina is the only one deserving of the #1 ranking. All the others are mental flakes, lesbians, unstable prima donnas. WTA is a mess.

If Ana Ivanovic still as the number1 ranking after this US Open she is the embodiment of the phrase 'good things happen to good people'. For that reason alone she deserves to be number1.

If Ivanovic still remains #1 the WTA should be ashamed of themselves. Too many players have made a mockery of the #1 rank this year. Ivanovic has done this twice and has consistently played lousy since the FO, Jankovic had her one week in the spotlight despite only winning ONE tournament in the past 12 months. Sharapova had #1 for all of 3 weeks and hasn't done much of anything since winning the AO.

That said, Serena would not make a good #1 as she's basically a part-time player and finds new excuses and injuries to withdraw from 5-6 events a year. I'm all for Safina or Dementieva getting #1 as they actually play and bring everything they have to their matches everytime.

The race for #1. I've added the 140 points to the four ladies chasing Ivanovic for #1 as they all reached the round of 16.

ANA IVANOVIC = 3532
JELENA JANKOVIC = 3405
SERENA WILLIAMS = 3231
ELENA DEMENTIEVA = 3120
DINARA SAFINA = 3047

Looking at their RD 16 matches, Serena and Dinara should win their matches. Elena should win as well as Li just can't beat Russian players. Jelena has an interesting match with Wozniacki and it wouldn't surprise me to see Jelena go down.

Ranking points are valid for the whole year and it is not enough to play good for the couple of months to get the #1 for a good reason. So neither Safina not Dementieva deserve the #1 yet.

Ana was clearly the best player in the first half or this year (AO final, IW, FO, ...) and deservingly hold the #1 spot. She sucked after that and she will certainly lose it after the US Open. Again deservingly so.

Not sure why are you complaining?

I actually find this race for #1 exciting. Much better than to have one player winning everything and 3000 points ahead of #2.

It looks like Jankovic (ugh) is in the best position to be #1 as she will probably lose in the semis to Dementieva while Dementieva will probably lose to Venus in the finals. Hopefully Elena wins in the final to avoid the disgrace of Jankovic becoming #1 again. Safina will probably lose to Venus in the semis.

It is possible that Ivanovic drops to #5. Jankovic could be the first to pass her, but Jankovic runs out of gas at this point in majors, so she should be gone by the SF, as usual.

Safina took care of business with a bagel.

Yeah but if Jankovic goes out in the semis, and none of Safina, Dementieva, or Serena wins the title (translation- Venus wins the title which is looking more and more likely) then Jankovic is the new #1 which is pathetic.

I'm hoping Elena can win the whole thing and become #1..

She is foxy, reeeaall nice looking, has improved the serve a bit, works hard and is one of the purest ball strikers on the WTA.

Much to say Jankovic will take over the role as world No 1 on the following week. Safina will go up too. Hope she will show her best to compete in the final of USO for her 1st major slam.

Safina up 6-2 5-2

Pennetta holds up. Safina serving at 5-3.
Safina wins 6-2 6-3. :)

Safina is in the top 5 now. A SF win and she'll be #3. A finals win and she'll be #1.

Serena is now #2 for the moment. The hunt for #1 is on in the semifinals. Unlike Ivanovic, these semifinalists have been clutch at this USO.

I'm guessing it'll be Safina and Dementieva in the finals.

That is the final I am hoping for. I fully expect Dementieva to beat Jankovic on their current form, but Safina vs Serena is close to a toss up I think. It is nice to know now the only way Jankovic can be #1 is to atleast final, possibly even needing to win the tournament. There was the scenario if Venus possibly won she could get it by losing in the semis, but that is gone now.

Oh GOD, JJ beat Dementieva. Jankovic has 3965 points now. JJ clinches no worse than #2 and gets #1 outright if Safina beats Serena.

Well if Jankovic wins at least she can say she won a slam when taking the top spot....but basically whoever wins is number one after the tournament so they'll have that to look forward to

it's what we want

People can talk all they want about how interesting or exciting it is to see this close competition at the top of the lady's rankings, but we all know that at the end of the tour we would like to see a clear leader emerge as the year-end number one. I've read enough posts on here to notice we all have different opinions of who it should be, regardless of what the numbers tell us. Right now, I am not sure anyone deserves the spot based on more than just points. There hasn't been a dominant lady since the retirement of Justine. Honestly, as long as we have the mix of women we have now, I'm not sure the situation will change. I am waiting for a new talent to emerge and blow them all away and establish a new standard for the others to chase. How about Wozniacki? I saw her at the open last Sunday battling Jelena, and I was thoroughly impressed.

Serena Williams has regained the top spot.

1 SERENA WILLIAMS = 4091
2 JELENA JANKOVIC = 3965
3 ANA IVANOVIC = 3532
4 ELENA DEMENTIEVA = 3430
5 DINARA SAFINA = 3357
6 MARIA SHARAPOVA = 3041
7 SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA = 2571
8 VENUS WILLIAMS = 2386

At least it was a competitive finals. I cringe knowing Serena is #1 again. It just shows the rest of the tour is weak (skills and mental-wise) when Serena can still intimidate her competition and practically win whenever she feels like, despite not being in top shape.

It is what it is for now. I have a feeling that rank will change hands again before the year is up.
