Real test will come early next year when Peng is released without a full investigation. Will WTA continue to suspend the China tournaments in the 2nd half of 2022 or will they backtrack on their demand for a full investigation which won't happen.

Peng has already been released. As in many Asian countries, criticism of high public officials can be a crime. Thai jails are full of people who criticised the King. I don't agree with that, but it is what it is.

What was her crime?
And, of course IOC is happy, as they don't want to cancel the Olympics.

Unless she is traveling outisde of China or contacting people outside of China for reasons other than telling people she is fine then it is safe to assume she is still under some level of house arrest.

Why? I live in the US and have friends overseas and haven’t contacted them in the last three months. I don’t believe I’m under house arrest.

And for almost the entire two weeks you were asserting that China had simply killed Peng.

Did you make sexual assault accusations against a high ranking official which were then removed and then you vanished for 2 weeks and the government released a statement purporting to be you? Don’t compare the two.

If you are a Chinese national, you know that you need to enter China with your own passport. Then, you need a permission from the security bureau to leave China. Chinese do not have the opportunity to just visit a foreign consulate for a visa to another nation as they must obtain a permission prior to apply for their traveling visas even when they have their passports. So, do you think Peng Shuai has a complete clearance to just hop on the plane and visit the WTA for a briefing now? :)

Are we that free in the West. Did you know that 25% of the worlds prison population is an American sitting in an American jail.

So 1 in 4 prisoners in the entire world is a US citizen. Makes you think.
"Makes me think" you are making that stat up out of your pie-hole--Cite your source or it's utter BS--if true, I suggest they all be released and put in a half way house next door to U. But you compared me to Dashiell Hammett so I'm flattered!

Errrr....maybe don't break the law?

Or are you suggesting cops go around snatching people and throwing them in prisons in the US?
How come the US imprisons so much more people than the rest of the world? Either we've got way too many criminals, or the system convicts too many people

With for profit prisons there are a lot of perverse incentives to put as many people in prison as possible... That's not even getting into the racial inequality aspect of people of certain races being convicted more and/or receiving harsher sentences for the same crimes

Before I get accused of being a leftist, neither party is innocent. Our current vice president is in the pocket of for profit prison enterprises

Watch the news mate and u'll see why--or, hang out at a Walgreens, Nordstrom's, or Luis Vuitton and u'll find out why there AREN'T enough criminals in prison--but there are millions more waiting there turn to invade at the southern border--with $450,000 as an incentive I may jump the line myself--funny how well clothed and fed they all look--Heels Up has done her job well on her mercy missions to South America--maybe she should visit her dad once in a while. BTW, heard they're putting a half-way house next door to where u live--enjoy your new friends.

U shouldn't have been--it wasn't favorably--but glad to hear u've heard of him--u must be really old! He wrote ads for a jewelry store--that work would be beneath your present day dignity I'm sure--they didn't have food stamps and SSI back then.

I do find it funny that the US has dropped over 300,000 bombs in the middle east over the past 2 decades, but thats not a human rights violation, yet censoring a post is.

Can you imagine the uproar if China dropped 10 bombs in the middle east. Now imagine a country dropping 300,000.
Ever hear of 9/11 mate? The 300,000 bombs came out of your pie-hole once again--do u work for wang or does wang work for u?--asking for a friend.

So, if the US did drop these 300,000 bombs where did we drop them?--If u answered that it would be abundantly clear why it was so necessary--cite your sources or they were dropped from your pie hole.

The right move is for the US, its allies and China to stop with the flamethrowing and just leave their ideological biases at the door to try and figure out how to co-exist in this world. If there are legitimate human rights issues, those should be discussed and dealt with openly. But the current environment of ultranationalism stoked by fabricated narratives is only going to take us down a path to greater hostility. If it doesn't stop, who knows what will happen.
Well, let's use our imaginations now--the CCP may reneg on it's deal to maintain the citizens of Hong Kong's freedoms, and arrest publishers of news papers and hundreds of protesters, (and we're not talking "catch & release" like the Georg Soros commie DA's do)-- it may threaten to annex Japan and make dangerous military provocations with flyovers of Taiwan--nah, that would smack of imperialism with hints of "ultra(-)nationalism"--nah, not in the cards--unimaginable from a peace loving regime. --oh, how 'bout sovereign Tibet?

Nuclear deterrence says nothing by way of conventional warfare can happen. So... biological warfare then with its A grade potential for plausible denial? Or maybe more cyber hacking, strategic purchases of companies in sensitive industries or blocking such purchases. The endgame is not going to be as electrifying as those seemingly spoiling for a fight may be hoping for.

Hello, Chinese here. Actually Peng Shuai has indeed used the word "forced" (逼)in her description of the second sexual encounter three years ago.

Basically the timeline: Ten+ years ago she was his secret lover and of course they had consensual sex and and then the man got promoted and they never contacted again

Three years ago old man felt h*rny again and arranged a hit with Peng in the morning as an excuse to have sex with her in the afternoon, under the consent and guard of his own wife (what kind of sick porn plot is that?!). Peng initially refused but after some emotional manipulation by the senior smooth talker and unable to get over her lingering feelings, she finally gave in.

And of course afterwards she was again dumped like trash leading to her pent up emotions and eventual decision to spill the beans probably out of spite this year.

So was this a metoo thing? Probably not. It was more like a mistress getting dumped twice and attempting to exact revenge by publicly revealing the affair.

But was the second sexual encounter 100% consensual or legitimate? Probably not. First of all, Peng initially refused, and quite strongly at that. Also, what kind of man gets away with taking a woman to his house, demanding her to have sex with her and insisting after she initially refused? And all that with his wife's consent? His power had everything to do with him being able to secure a hit with Peng (he basically did it through connections), him intimidating his wife into consenting to adultery committed against herself, and the boldness with which he conducted the whole affair and with which he coerced Peng into the second sexual encounter. So even if it wasn't straight out r*pe it was definitely a story of a man exploiting his power to harm not just one, but two women.

Whether this is sexual assault or not isn't even important. (It's important in the sense that women should be protected, of course, but not important in determining the official's guilt. He's guilty either way.) This is more related to the misconduct and abuse of power by a Chinese official and that's why China is losing face.

Agree with @Clay lover
1. Peng Shuai posted a message where she admits one of the highest officials had an affair with her. There is a part that also sounds rapey (Imagine that you meet a girl after 7 years, invite her home. She does not want sex with you, cries, breaks up. So you wait a couple of hours and still push on sex until she agrees. That is at least creepy as **** at best and rape at worst)
2. She posts the story on Weibo. Post dissapears, she dissapears for a couple of weeks. It is well known that party officials in China should not have affairs and it's swept under the rug all the time. So she is silenced as all stories like that.
3. She cannot speak freely without supervision, she cannot leave the country.
Doesn't matter if he manipulated her into sex or forced straightly. He used his power to get sex. She spoke up and got silenced.

Good for WTA for suspending the events in China, even if they won't happen because of pandemic. Now it's CCP party turn to do something, pressure is off WTA. If CCP does nothing or keeps the course, WTA can pull out of China without losing sponsors, etc.

So we create an international incident and potentially cancel the Olympics because of an immoral liaison? Peng is a pretext, and the incident is being used for political purposes.

Nice summary of what's been quietly going on and fast gaining momentum with the help of bag-boy Hunter. Thankfully I play a cheap sport and hopefully I won't be around when socialism totally creeps in taking complete hold of the canchas for the use and sport of the party elites with private courts at their dachas. It took a woman doubles champion to bring light onto this subject--Peng Shuai is following in the courageous foot steps of Alice Marble.

Its obvious from your posts where you lie on this matter. I will try to keep things as civil as possible but there several flaws in your observation which has been propagated by the MSM. Please take into consideration I will state some facts that you may not like but are facts nonetheless & are easily verifiable via wikipedia & the like.

1) Hong Kong (HK) was taken from China very egregiously during the Opium Wars via gunboat diplomacy. Britain wanted free reign to sell an illicit drug to the Chinese. The went to war with Britain to stop it but lost & ceded HK in the Treaty of Nanking. When Britain handed back HK to China in 1997, it tried to add all manner of preconditions that were not in Treaty of Nanking. China just nodded & ignored it! Britain had held HK for 150 years & the they never once offered free elections, universal suffrage, democracy etc. but now that she has been returned to China, HK needs to be given all these freedoms that were previously denied to her by the British! Hypocritical much!

2) The MSM just loves repeating that China keeps flying over Taiwan in a threatening manner. The term often used is "China encroaches into Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ)". What the MSM doesn't tell you is the ADIZ doesn't mean airspace & they quietly choose not to highlight this distinction! The ADIZ is an arbitrary monitoring zone chosen by Taiwan & is not its national airspace. Why don't you google an image of Taiwan's ADIZ, you will see it extends deep into China's mainland. A Chinese plane could be encroaching it while parked on the ground in China! Why don't you check the news reports again. Does any say that China entered Taiwan's national airspace? Its always the ADIZ!

3) Tibet was taken by the Kuomintang (KMT) that was subsequently beaten by the CCP in the Chinese Civil War. The KMT than ran into exile in Taiwan. So its your boys in Taiwan that took Tibet. The CCP just took custody of it after the KMT left!

Not sure why this thread has descended into a global politics debate.

It's quite simple:
-A women is being blackmailed and coerced by a powerful state, after detailing a sexual assault allegation.
-We should not stand for this.

Great post, but have to disagree that this is not a #metoo thing. This is exactly what this is about. While all y'all are banging on about geopolitics, the fact of the matter is that in every country in the world powerful men get away with this behavior.

I was young and stupid, and had no prior experience before my first time/experience, it was rape. I did have consensual sex with my rapist afterwards, as well as non-consensual. A part of me died a long time ago - reading the posts by some of the guys here disgusts me. If this is how guys read allegations of this nature, well, there’s a reason why my own rapist never suffered any consequences. Why it would be foolish of me to say anything. As evidenced by how some people react.
Thanks for sharing your painful experience. As I keep pointing out it's no coincidence that women have treated Peng's story more seriously and considerately than men.

Though I'm a guy myself let me share a relevant experience of my own without getting into too much detail (though I'm guessing this thread will be locked soon enough). During the 2016 US election I thought I stood on the same side as women who were looking to oppose Trump and his enablers, but I realized how wrong I was after corresponding with this female e-pal of mine who's just about the sweetest person you'll ever meet. "Disgust" is too feeble a term to describe the palpable revulsion she felt towards the sexist man-child and the sheer horror at watching this dangerous buffoon clean out the GOP field and ultimately rise to the most powerful position in the world. Even on the written page (K, screen) alone you really could feel her fear and loathing for everything that was taking place, an instinctive sense of dread and doom which no man could match.

And get this... she's not even American! She's a Brit who has never stepped foot in the US, and witnessing how an outsider could be so viscerally repulsed by what was going on in a foreign country was a much-needed wake-up call as I no longer view diversity merely as a high-minded ideal to aspire to, but rather as an absolute necessity if we're to fix much of what's wrong with the world. Much as we like to think of ourselves as dispassionate arbiters of truth it's close to impossible to fully devote yourself to a cause without that skin in the game.

I was gonna say all this parsing of Peng's original post is a red herring but you took care of it with an insider's perspective and vocabulary. Just a small quibble raised by @Pavla: this is a very much a #MeToo thing. In fact I seriously doubt Peng-gate gains this much traction only 4-5 years ago.

On the final days the US pulled out of Afghanistan they dropped a targeted missile strike wiping out 8 terrorists which they said was justice for the earlier bombing. They promoted this story in the worldwide media.

It turned out to be a family that had nothing to do with anything. That just about sums it up in terms of the constant human rights abuse going on through the justification of war.
It's pretty rich of you to cry about the unfair treatment of Julian Assange (which I agree on, BTW) while running interference for the CCP that continues to deny Peng freedom to communicate with whomever. FYI it was the NYT that broke/spread the story about the US military's cover-up of the bombing, and last I checked the Gray Lady was America's most prominent newspaper, in fact the most prominent player in international journalism period.

And during the Trump years the NYT like most of American legacy media was overwhelmingly critical of the incumbent administration. Unless you can name one comparable publication in continental China - no, SCMP which is based in Hong Kong doesn't count, though even it's not exactly the best point of comparison following its change of ownership in '16 - that's equally willing and free to hold the CCP accountable, you can quit this desperate attempt at false equivalence.
