WTA week of 1/27; Linz 500 & Singapore 250

Haven't watched too much of Clara Tauson before, but this is some scary play. The indoor conditions help obviously, but that forehand sounds like a canon, and the delicate dropshot to win the service game at 2-2 came from nowhere.

Kaslinkaya looked really bother by her right thigh until the medical timeout.

The Wang v Teichmann match was a long drawn out affair, tiring watching it in person.

Wang has got a long day tomorrow with both semis in singles and doubles.

She's got a strong serve too. Looks like she's been working on her fitness. Looks trimmer.

Muchova v Potapova possibly should've been the Final. We'll see. Lots of impressive serve+1 from Muchova - many of the plus-1 were via winning volleys.

Alexandrova actually won their last meeting in Stuttgart in 3 sets about 3 yrs ago. Their H2H is actually 1-1.

Anti climatic end to Kalinskaya's run.

Mertens should win it, unless she puts in a stinker and Li plays lights out.

Maybe she's trying to break the joint record of Monfils/Haas of 33 retirements and WO???
How is she able to be ranked so high with this type of record?
When Dubai final point off she will be gone out of top 20

She retired twice in 2024, and already did the same amount by February 2025 lol.

Anna K needs points badly, her ranking is gonna drop off a fair bit. Lost out on Aussie Open QF points and have Dubai final points to defend.

Missed most of the Muchova match except the last few points. Looked like it was pure domination by Alexandrova. No time for Muchova to play her "beautiful" game. Looked like bullet serves and groundstrokes from Alexandrova were too much for Muchova.

Did Muchova played badly today?

Singapore final:

Li v Mertens (2)

Linz final:

Alexandrova (4) v. Yastremska (5)

3 & 7 am my time, gonna be tough.

A few awkward moments as the announcer and the organizer carefully navigated through the trophy ceremony. Yastremska as usual didn't shake hand, nor did she acknowledge/congratulated Alexandrova winning the tournament. OTH, Alexandrova congratulated Yastremska & team, followed by the camera zooming to Yastremska with stoic expression, standing between the tournament sponsors/organizer.

No winner/runner up photo op either as they were announced but she didn't move to join Alexandrova on center.

This is sports, not a political summit. Just silly behavior.

I think they can decide for themselves given they're 1. adults and 2. their country is being occupied. I don't understand why people who live/come from neither Russia/Ukraine get so peeved at whether a Ukrainian chooses to shake a Russian's hand or not. They have been doing it for years now so it's hardly a surprise and it just shows how divisive politics has become nowadays that people feel the need to flag it up every time. Politics infiltrates every aspect of life and these things can be twisted into politics if you don't take a stance.

Yastremska lives in France. Alexandrova lives in the Czech Republic. That's a political statement right there.

Well yeah because both their countries are being bombed. Let’s not forget Yastremska was in a bomb shelter in Kyiv when the war broke out so she has the most right to refuse shaking hands with them. It’s not Alexandrova or Kasatkinas fault but the Kremlin would use a Ukrainian athlete shaking hands with a Russian athlete as pro Russian propaganda in a heartbeat. So I completely understand why they do it.

The Kremlin is a machine and would do anything to try to make it look like Ukraine supports the genocide the Russians are committing.
