WTA week of 2/1; Abu Dhabi 500, Transylvania & Ostrava 250s

What is going on? Raducanu wins 10 games in a row. Up 3-0 in the second set, Raducanu has yet to lose a point this set.

great comeback by emma.
feel a bit bad for juvan. she can really strike a tennis ball. from both sides. but seems to run very hot and then very cold.

just seen that Diane Parry, a 1Handed BH player, uses a 2Handed BH during return of serve before switching back to a one hander during open play. Has she always done this?

very sensible.

Three British women into the quarters of 3 different tour events. In the same week.
I don't remember that happening that before.

Bartunková continuing to impress after her nice run at the Australian Open.
Raducanu struggling against the now veteran, former great Slovenian prospect, Kaja Juvan.
Talk about a very nice looking player! Juvan is beautiful!

Juvan is still only 25, although there was a time she looked a good prospect for the top 20 and beyond. Just hasn't happened for her.
Yeah, she has been struggling to break through for a while now, but some of the women really don't come on until around that age.

At 25 Paolini was still basically a nobody playing qualifiers. Ditto Pegula who was just starting to make waves at that age (and of course I will never forget her beating Giorgi to win her first title, ffs).

Not the best 500 QFs you’ll ever see.

Do you think Raducanu will have a hard time against Chwalinska? She's the type of player who doesn't miss at all, you have to win against her if you want to beat her, she won't hand it with ue

This thread will be bumpin’ right after the Slam.

Abu Dhabi draw

28-player field, Bencic/Alexandrova/Tauson/Navarro are top 4 with byes.

Kenin v. Samsonova will begin while the men’s AO final is underway. @GoKenin

Transylvania draw

Raducanu/Cristian/Cirstea/Xinyu Wang lead the way. @Fintft

@NaomiKonjuhPotapova will find one name he likes in the draw too.

Ostrava draw

30-player field, Tatjana Maria & Arango get byes.

Both 250s are indoors.
When Emma Raducanu has fired the world's store of tennis teaching professionals, they all will become humble enough to go online and ask Chat what to do.

Oliynikova with the upset win over Xinyu 4 & 4 - she will play the winner of Raducanu and Chwalinska.

Raducanu took the first set 6-0 and I've tuned in for the second. Currently serving for the match up 5-4 but Chwalinska has been pretty solid with that lefty grinding and counterpunching, while Raducanu has been on the offensive nonstop - she really does remind me of Halep and Li Na who I recall she's previously mentioned as players who she's been inspired by (fairly expected given her roots).
I suspect Chwalinska won't let this match go without a fight now so Raducanu will need to be bold and not get jittery.

Edit: Raducanu takes it 6-0 6-4 and will play Oliynikova in the semifinals. Really hoping she plays Cirstea in the final.

No that I remember. I watched her whole meltdown match against Mirra and she didn't do that then, must have acquired a new WTA skill.

straightforward from Emma. A slightly tricky, unknown quanitity in Oliynikova next. A potential banana peel.
I've never heard of her before. How good can she be?

The other two are Snigur (rank 144) and Cirstea.

Cirstea looks the toughest, although Raducana had that famous win against her at Wimbledon - the first full match I saw Emma play. Can't remember if they've played since.

Slightly suprised Boulter and Volynets have never met before. You'd think they would have spent a lot of time in the same levels of the game over the years

she burst on the scene this year at the AO. quite a character with quite a story. now she has taken out a very decent player in xinyu wang. So emma needs to be on her game.

Interesting
Saw her at Indian Wells a few years ago
I seek out WTA one hand back handers
Didn't notice she did that then

Is emma raducanu popular in romania. After all her dad is romanian and she has romanian roots with the surname

I just realized there is a WTA 125 event happening in my city Mumbai..
Sadly no mention here. But hardly any recognizable players though

^ Funny you mention that. I was on ESPN earlier & happened to click their women’s tennis scores header. This was the result…

I do like Lilli Tagger’s future prospects.

I see Baptise is scheduled to play qualies at Qatar on Saturday but is playing the SF in Abu Dhabi tomorrow. Doesn't a SF usually guarantee a SE the following week?

Semis lineups.

Raducanu v. Sorana would definitely be the most entertaining final of the 3, which pretty much guarantees it won’t happen.

She seems popular with the crowd and tries to address them in Romanian too so I think she's got a home advantage even in Romania with the crowd support - it would be really interesting to see her play Cirstea as I'd love to see what the crowd support split would be like, especially with it being Cirstea's final year on the tour.

Original romanian vs imported romanian

maybe on the lob too, saw that and the BH return on the youtube highlights

Oliynikova's transition from moonball defence to back backhand passing shot is just incredible . You wouldn't think it would work at this level, but here she is using it to great effectiveness.

That was some battle. Hopefully she'll be ok for tomorrow. Boulter into her final as well.

Just seen the Doha W1000 draw. Sabalenka, Pegula, and Keys are absent. Come on girls; it's only the first one of the season. I think Sabalenka is making a habit of this every year now.

Oliynikova already moonballing Rads. :-D She must be a very annoying player for her opponents.
Are those real tattoos on her face?

Never actually saw her before, and her match was on the TV when my morning play group ended today. Some of the women I play with were like, "Who TF is she? And what's with her face tattoos?"

They're stickers on here face - she had stars for the AO and now bats for Transylvania. The rest of her tattoos are real though.

Oliynikova with a break in the 3rd set. Raducanu breaks right back.
This is some match!
Oliynykova is pretty athletic, very tenacious and crafty with her mix of hard hitting, deep looping balls and slice. I really thought she had cracked the code after the second set and then Raducanu had a hot streak before nearly being dragged back into a tussle. It will be good to see Oliynykova for the rest of the year especially on clay and grass with that game.

Glad to hear that. She would regret those face tattoos eventually. How about the neck tat? I like the she plays. Mix it up!

Cirstea into her 8th WTA final at the age of 35 and Raducanu into just her 2nd at the age of 23.
This will be their 2nd meeting after Raducanu prevailed in straight sets at Wimbledon in 2021.

Emma & Sorana survived my reverse jinx, well done.

Katie (Boulter) v. Korpatsch in the Ostrava final.

Bejlek/Tauson 5-all in their decider, winner gets Alexandrova for Abu Dhabi 500 glory.

The neck tattoo is real and it's quite recent I believe. I'm quite used to players being inked up, a fair few Czechs are including Vondrousova so there must be a big scene for it in Eastern Europe (that's the trend I'm seeing anyway - I know other players have tattoos but often it's 1 or a couple on separate areas that aren't so obvious).

Crazy that none of the big Czech names played Ostrava - I'm not even sure how many are fit enough to play right now though except maybe Muchova? Really tough slot to hold it in the calendar when you have Doha next week, then Dubai and the Sunshine Double not too long after. There is a Prague tournament in July too so maybe more will play there.

I'm hoping we will get a GB double tomorrow with both Raducanu and Boulter prevailing, but we will see...

Interesting that Cirstea is slight favourite. I think the length of today's matches has tilted those odds for her.

Boulter is favourite in the other. I've never thought much of Korpatsch tbh, and Boulter is playing lights out at the mo.
