WTA week of 4/1; Charleston 500 & Bogota 250

^ About the first quote and comment in Roby's post: As European I do like that there is at least one clay court tournament in US (even if it's on that weird grey/green clay) but the "classic" US clay court tournaments were held in Amelia Island and Hilton Head, not in some Charleston! *some pitiful "boomer declares"-smilie here in the end*

As there's no winner poll, I'm going to predict some *add over-rated and over-advertised battery brand here*-bunny that can run forever wins, so Sakkari or Haddad Maia.

Kalinina takes the first over Caro.
how is Caroline playing these matches,, she still has the rhematoid arthritis where the Joints flame up and make it difficult to swing out.... i heard its much worse than playing with Osteoarthritis. Not sure how she is playing with that going on ??

Aussie Lucky Loser Astra Sharma destroys Tsurenko 6-4 6-0.

Tsurenko won just 4 points on her own serve in the 2nd set.

Woah, dude, take it easy. I'm just trying to give you some perspective. To the locals, and some Americans, I'm sure it is a pretty well known event. To the rest of the world, it's a small event, and a strange one at that, since it is played on clay, but not the clay that everyone else is accustomed to seeing. People may find it quirky and nice, but not one of the best on tour.

I was thinking the same thing, but then I heard some talk about the Olympics. Basically, her recent result gives her a very real shot at improving her ranking enough to qualify. So maybe she wants to try and rack up as many points as possible. And I do think she can overtake Keys in the rankings, since Maddison hasn't done much lately, and clay isn't her favorite.

Well, Jarry couldn't win the tournament owned by his father, but maybe Emma is different. She certainly won't have as much ridiculous crown support.

As for Jabeur, she is a total disaster lately. Ranked in the top 10, she is playing like someone ranked around 150.

They have been playing in Charleston for 51 years straight.

Forgot that Sharma won Charleston in 2021, it wasn't this exact tournament which did play as a 500 but was a one off 250 that week later during that funny little Covid period.

She beat Jabeur in the final who was the top seed. Hasn't had much on tour of late but.

Townsend cruising at 5-1. She's actually fun to watch as she's not playing the typical WTA rallies - showing a lot of variations, angles, dropshots, kick serve, etc.

Take out Swiatek and Pegula back to back one week and then get eaten by Taylor Townsend the following week..

Well done Alexandrova.

I thought the BHM vs. Dolehide match was going to 3 sets as well, then I was thinking it was going to at least be a second set tiebreaker... ouch. oh well.

Hoping to see Collins vs Stephens in R3 although Fernandez leads the H2H with Stephens 3-0 so it's no guarantee. Clay is Stephens' most consistent surface though so hopefully that's something.

Both Stephens and Collins take the first set in their respective matches. I'd love one of them to win this tournament, but especially SS as she's gone a good while without a WTA title and 2 time champ here sounds nice.

I hope she’s thinking like you, which would give her a boost of motivation, as that’s what lacking in her lately.

Townsend's so far good run is this tournament is quite unexpected. She beat Alexandrova that did very well in her last tournament and is now troubling Vika big time...
Shouldn't this be far too slow surface for her to shine?

Townsend changed her game quite a bit post pregnancy(and is now at a career high ranking!). She doesn't S&V or chip and charge like she used to do pretty much all the time in the past(see 2019 US Open) Now she plays mostly from the baseline(not just here but on hardcourts as well) and is more patient.
