WTA week of 4/1; Charleston 500 & Bogota 250

This final season resurgence is such a wonderful story.

Winning back to back titles at long-established, high regarded touranments, on different surfaces, in consecutive weekends, is a superb achievement by any player regardless, before we get to her circumstances. And it's not like she had easy draws at either event, knocking out a whole host of pretty big name / well known / dangerous opponents, only dropping 2 sets out of 28, having to play in 13 matches instead of 11 as she didn't have 1st round byes in either tournament etc.

And before Miami, she was already doing well, with 2 of her defeats inflicted by Swiatek, and another by Rybakina.

And she played two matches in like 6 hours in the middle of the week.

Danielle's level is just outrageous right now. Dasha wasn't even bad but there was nothing she could do. There is so much intent behind all of Danimal's shots, relentless agression.

The other players to win these 2 tournaments back to back were Hingis in 1997 and Serena in 2013, so illustrious company for Collins there, and of course she didn't have 1st round byes at both events like they did !

Graf also won both tournaments in the same year in 1987 but they were separated by a month then, while Serena also won them both in 2008 but there was Amelia Island in-between.

Wonderful controlled and consistent aggression during these 2 tournaments by Collins, with her firing winners at will, changing the direction of the ball so well, being so clutch during big points etc.

She won't keep winning indefinitely though, her hot streak is bound to end at some point.
I'm curious to see who she will finally lose to.

Osorio is up to no. 63 in the rankings. Hopefully she can have a product European clay court season. It was noticeable how effective her backhand down the line was yesterday, and up against Bouzkova's defensive skills she played aggressively.

It's fascinating to me that Bouzkova often plays the way that she does with her height and build (Osorio hit 10 more winners than she did yesterday and generally the more aggressive player), though she does move and 'retrieve' incredibly well for her height and is clearly one of the best 'tall movers' around on the tour.

Osorio is an easy player to root for and want to do well IMO, with her clearly loving the fact that she is a professional tennis player and regularly smiling on court, strong fighting spirit, the fact that she is typically so gracious in defeat etc.

Collins form has soared off the charts but she insists she just wants to get off the tour, get preggers and start a family. She probably just needs a break and seems the kind of player who could unretire later on. She's probably younger than woz was when she cited health reasons (ra) to retire.

So is Collins better than Swiatek now? She's going on a Swiatek-esque run...

Maybe she is more relaxed now that she said she is likely retiring.
I've been saying this for weeks now. Pretty much confirms that her biggest limitation in the past was probably between her ears.

Collins asking for someone to be removed. Wonder what they did? Maybe not cheering hard enough? Breathing too loud? Eating too fast? Being alive?
It's insane to me that they would even consider letting a player tell them who must be removed from the stadium. Total nonsense.

Interesting as I've not been following the doubles at the Charleston event but Sloane Stephens is into the final with Ashlyn Krueger. I wonder what has sparked this transition into the doubles work for SS? She's hardly played it throughout her career and now she's playing with a WTA novice - possible indications of mentorship/moving into coaching at some point?
It's basically "free" money for them. Not a lot of money at smaller events, mind you, but still some money none-the-less.

Also, knowing the way some athletes think/operate, they would much rather play low pressure matches than train/practice, so...

I've always like Danielle's game. And I love that an American WTA player wants to win bad. Her and Pegula.
You get the impression that Pegula wants to win bad? I get the opposite impression.

Good for you.

It takes a lot of pressure off knowing you won't have to travel every week or two somewhere and she gets to be home with her frisky dog full-time.
With her emotional positive outbursts on the court how could one retire when they are winning big tournaments? I think she'll change her mind unless she's planning a family.
If she does retire at 30, then I'm turning my eyes at you Venus, wth are you doing?
I noticed Danielle's on a 3rd boyfriend in the last few years.

Poor guy. Feel sorry for her dog too. I get total narcissistic vibes from that one. Eject! Eject!

Crazy. With no points to defend til Canada in August, I think we'll see Dani return to the top 10. She's #4 in the race too.
I'd like to see her win another 1000, a major or the YEC this year. She seemed to arrive on tour late as she did college? Then she's had a fair few injuries and illnesses so here we are already in her final year on tour at 30. I think she has a good shot at RG and the USO. Not sure if she's all that on grass as she only made R3 at Wimbledon once. She's made QF at RG in the past so we will see how she goes in Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome before RG. Her form is at least exciting as we know we have Swiatek, Sabalenka and Rybakina pretty much in contention for big tournaments many times per year, so add Collins' form into the mix as well as the general unpredictability of the WTA and I'm hoping for an exciting clay and grass season before heading back to the hard courts for the USO swing. It's hard to tell if this is solely a short hot run in N America or if Danimal will tear through the field at a fair few more tournaments this year. I think she could win as many as 4 more tournaments this year, but I doubt she won't win another event. This form indicates she will probably have another blinder at another event this year, ideally her final event if that's the case to send her off with a W.
